Witty title involving one-way trains

I wouldn't do it. What if something happened on the way, or there was some big catastrophe back at earth? You'd be pretty much screwed without a constant supply of supplies and funding. Don't get me wrong, it's my lifelong dream to go to space. Just not like that, even with the technology we have now. There is just no Cost-effective or practical way to do it.

I wouldn't do it.....
I mean I would want to stay home here on Earth, it also says oxygen supplies are needed -_-, I would want to be running around in a space suit on mars....

I wouldn't. No beaches, no animals, no oxygen, all things I would miss. Do they have internet on mars?
But on the other hand, if I did go and it worked people would never forget me. I would be like the Colombus of Mars!

The internet would be slow. At the quickest 8 minutes for a response at the longest 40 minutes.
And you thought dial-up was bad.

Zenith,

I don't being adventurous has anything to do with it.
I think most people wouldn't want to do it because of the hardship. You would work 12-16 hours a day, 7 days a week until injury or radiation kills you. Your diet would be very bland and limited. Only recreational activities would be books, movies, and television shows. As I said earlier, internet is basically one way conversations. Most injury's or illness means death. It would make life aboard a submarine look easy.

But you would be on Mars.

I think that that's neat enough to justify going there. For me, at least.

You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

I would rather do time in prison, than be sentenced to life on Mars.

Sure, we'd be on Mars, but I'd rather be alive on Earth than dead on Mars.
Power to you for wanting to do it, though.

No, I still have a whole life ahead of me and I will not be dying on Mars anytime soon. Even if they said I could come back from Mars, I still wouldn't do it. Four months in a clausterphobic spaceship is not for me.

Also, sure it'll be cool to be on Mars, but for the whole time is just too long.

Possible death on Mars > Life on Earth

For me, at least. Not sure about you guys, but it seems to be the reverse.

Maybe if I was colonising a planet like Pandora (yes, an Avatar reference) then I might do it. Mars is just soo... Red... And dusty...
No animals, just rocks
No water, just ice
No rain, just dust storms
No pokebeach, just solitare

Why does everybody think that going to Mars means instant death? Then won't send you ill equipped to Mars. We're talking about colonizing, sending more and more every year (including hospitals etc), could be fun after a while. And don't worry about the radiation. Mars is far enough from any source of radiation to only receive Gamma-radiation, sure it has a high penetrating power, but on the other hand their ionizing power is very low. And still, some good protective walls and you won't receive that anymore either (they should try ice, ice protects you from most if not all radiation if it's about 2 or 3 feet thick, and it's cold enough there to prevent it from melting, plus it works very well as insulation.

Hospitals are only as good as the doctors and the medicine. What doctors you get, is anybody's guess. As for radiation, you will spend a lot of time in a suit building. The story listed in the link is much rosier than the fuller one than what I read last week.

Like I said, they won't send them ill equipped, good doctors are a must.

It might be, but still, it's only gamma radiation (most of it at least). Not that harmful. Scientists in the early 1900 who studied the newly discovered radiation carried and worked with all types of radiation, including alpha, all day long (without knowing the effects of it), yet most did not die under the age of 60. Of course, it's dangerous and not healthy but it won't be an instant kill, let alone the gamma rays on Mars. You don't have to worry about that that much.

Yeah, maybe in like 20 years once technology is better and they've (hopefully) established colonies already it would be ok but now i don't think so. Why not start with the moon 1st? its closer and it would be more affordable to set up colonies there.

Since it's almost pointless to set up a colony on the Moon. There are almost no sources of energy (exept the Sun), no commodities, you would have to transport everything from other places, which is very expensive. Mars on the other hand contains water, an atmosphere made of carbondioxide and has its own sources of energy. So in the long run, colonizing the Moon is much more expensive. The only problem with Mars is that it's somewhat further away.
