RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Sign-ups (Please read rules in first post before replying!)

Sure thing. And with this we've met our cap. I'm temporarily closing this until the weekend. Since we've changed plans slightly, I'll try and get the prompt up early so people have more time to write, but in the meantime I don't want anyone new posting here.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Sign-ups closed (Prompt Coming Between Now and Friday! Stay Tuned)

Prompt Announcement

Poem Style: Acrostic-A poetry or writing style in which the first letter of the first word of every line can be used to spell out a specific name, word, acronym, etc. This is the required formatting of all poems. Anything that doesn’t match it will be automatically disqualified. Additionally, keep all submissions PG-13 at most. Any “adult-rated” vulgarities anywhere in the content will not just get you disqualified and banned from further competition, but could even get you (permanently) banned from the forums altogether. I intend to screen everything that gets submitted, and have zero-tolerance for this stuff (Insinuation is one thing, but don’t press your luck with me!).

Theme: Nostalgia or things remembered fondly (such as childhood or friendships). This can be a vague subject in your poems, but you must have it at least somewhat evident in your poems otherwise you’ll be disqualified.

Rhythm Scale: All poems should possess a similar rhythm scheme as follows: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH (changing and alternating each four lines or so as such). Anything that doesn’t fit this to any extent will be disqualified.

Length: Submissions are to be no shorter than eight lines and no longer than sixteen as to make up for reading time. If you choose to end on an oddball line (such as Line Nine or Line Ten), don’t modify the rhythm scheme to account for that fact. So long as you are using what’s been prescribed, your entry won’t be disqualified.

And I think this pretty much sums up the base-line requirements. You have a few weeks to work on these, so I’ll leave the due date as set. If people get them into me beforehand, I’ll make an announcement to that effect here and Judging can begin.

And, with this, you all have until June 3!

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

I wasn't expecting an acrostic.

I kind of look down at them for some reason. They can be really fun to make though.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

In essence, this is an acronym poem? Interesting. I love judging these. Thanks, Apollo. (Where you the one who decided on it?)

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

I was. (I was sorta stalking the Writer's Haven) Ignore that. The rhyming scale might be the hardest part for me. Never know though. Let's find out.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

Ooooo, interesting. Let's see how mine turns out.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

Well, it's no secret that Writer's Haven is technically the host of these events (as of the last one, anyhow), but I was the one making the final call for this contest. We mostly agreed to acrostic for the reason it's a relatively simple style, and easiest to manage for a contest (at least in comparison to the sestina-style I originally had in mind). In any case, the deed is done and you've all got just over three weeks.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

Grr I am not going to like that rhyming. Hopefully I won't make it sound forced. Certainly will be challenging xP

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

Yeah, this will be pretty challenging. I'm used to writing free-verse Edgar Allan Poe-esque poems. I'm not exactly rhyming's biggest fan either. I can't wait to see how my poem turns out.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (The Prompt's Acrostic! Read for details!)

And that's wherein the challenge lies, friends. Free-verse was out of the question from the beginning since it's an open-ended style without the needed restrictions for a contest. Good luck on your poetry writing. If necessary, write some practice ones to familiarize yourselves with the rhyme-scheme (Ick, and I just realized I wrote "rhythm" in the announcement instead. Meh, I'll fix it sometime later...).

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

Obligatory Reminder Bump: Only one week is left for poems to be turned in for submission! If I don't receive yours in my Inbox by 11:59PM (Central Standard Time) next Friday night, it won't be counted and I'll send it back with a disqualifcation notice. Likewise, I'd oblige you all to get them in somewhat earlier for a quick proofread I'll be doing to make sure they meet basic requirements and have overall decent grammar/spelling. Poor English skills are inexcusable for this competition, so to be fair I'll still give people a chance to do revisions if needed up until the night before the day these are due (on which I won't accept said poor-quality poems and the writer will be automatically disqualified since there won't ideally be enough time to make adequate revisions). So make good use of the remaining time you've got, and I expect to start seeing submissions soon.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

I have to drop. Sorry.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

Listen Apollo, I want to thank you for helping me with this contest but everytime i try to write, i always have something else and cant find time and cant remember everything from that pm, im going to have to drop, thank you and im sorry

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

Like cc and pmj, I'm gonna have to drop, just with final projects and boy scouts, sorry.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

With that in mind I ask the obvious question:

Since people are dropping, are we going to go ahead with the contest as planned with less people, or end up opening applications (for a small window of time) to fill the empty spaces?

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

I've got two entries already, DNA, so I say things go on as planned.

Also, it's fine, guys. Don't feel bad. I left that option open for people to drop out at any time if they felt like they couldn't come up with anything, but I'd have prefered it via PM. In any case, if more dropout over the next few days or I don't get at least two more entries by the time Friday come, I'll ask the authors I already got if they'll let me post what they sent and we can have a public vote to finish up (that's just worst case scenario, though).

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

I truely cannot think of anything in the theme or anything acrostic. I'm dropping out I guess.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

I'm dropping out, too. I haven't had time to write and will be out of state starting the sixth.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

Sorry, I will have to drop out. I had to take care of other things and neglected this contest. Sorry.

RE: Writing Contest May 2011-Poetry: Writing (Due next Friday before Midnight CST, NO EXCEPTIONS)

This was not entirely unexpected. I'm predicting another 2-4 dropouts in the next couple of days.
