that would probably be a small thing

If the system regards it as a "small thing", then children are only going to regard spending wisely as a "small thing" as well, and only learn otherwise though the hard way in future.

Last year, as I was completely "renovating" my collection, I bought a box each of every set from Base-Neo Destiny (except Base 2). Averaging about $100 a box (and paying $300 for a Neo Genesis box...so hard to find!), I spent about $1200 or so last year. However, I sold my old collection in sets of Pokémon by generation which averaged $150 each, so that paid for at least half. After selling the rest of my cards, I got about $300-400 more, so I spent a net of ~200-300 or so. I haven't spent a dime on anything Pokémon-related since then, and hadn't for a few years before (when D/P came out).

Essentially, most of what I spend on the hobby is time. :)

Im sorry to be frank but spending $5000 on games/cards annually is idiotic and irresponsible. I assume your lying because It is highly unlikely you spend that much. If you do then your mum and dad are really bad at teaching you the value of money. My mum would dissown me if i spend a net total of £150 a year, let alone £3000. What I spend is the complete neccessary. I see people at card tournaments who come in like $2 jackets and so on. Yet they have 20 Luxray lv xs. Honestly I prefer my swagger to be on point, not my pokemon binder.

Honestly I feel sorry for anyone who spends that amount of money on games etc because it is obvious they are spoilt and will never cope in the real world.

@XieRh
No not necessarily. I meant it didn't need to be like a normal subject something like 8 lessons per week like maths or 3 lessons like Chem. I meant only once per week because when it all adds up, that's all you would need for it.

I spend about $200 Including PRs. 3 PRs, some packs, and sleeves. Some of that is also bought for resale. So it is about $160, because I make some money back. I think I spend too much :/.

Amazing, my kids love toys so anytime I would have spare cash (we rent a room for 400 a month) i would probadly spend it on toys, cards, games, action figures, and sometimes gift lol. Valentine is coming up and I think i should give my child games or sumthing lol. MORE SPENDING COMING UP!!!! Good Luck Pokemon Company.

You are a dad? Okay, your kids are going to grow up learning that it's okay to spend 5 grand a year on Pokemon, and here I was talking about fiscal responsibility classes. Anyways :D, I hope you have a LOT of fun with those toys and use then for a long time so that it's worth all the money. Just my opinion.

Just because some of us are able to/or spend more than $5k a year (or every few years, it depends on what you're /investing/ in merchandise wise) in the franchise doesn't mean that people have to point fingers and say "oh that's a bad investment, oh that's a waste of money, oh you're irresponsible."

Talk to my living expenses, medical bills, my car, and my life that I live comfortably while spending that much on goods. And no, far from loaded, I get a modest amount a fortnight, and know how to manage my money very well. I can easily put myself into the high-amount-spent bracket this year because I made an investment in three japanese trophy cards I've been after since I was a kid. I call my collection additions investments for a reason: they accumulate more value the older they get. If I really was ever in an incredibly serious bind, I know I could easily get more than I paid back if I sold my goods.

Not all of us are debt accumulating people who don't know how to handle their money :p I have little social life as most of my friends are overseas, so my collection is my passion, one shared with my partner, so we both get enjoyment from my investments. At least I'm not like a decent chunk of people in my age bracket who spend their money on partying and other more illicit things (aka really wasting your money, and your life...)

I spend 25 dollars at every prerelease in the year, and the occasional 11 on a blister pack (maybe 8 times a year?). I buy sleeves at least three times a year, which is like another 24.
So maybe 200-250 dollars on Pokémon a year?

Oh wait, I also pre order games, which is like another 40 every year. So maybe somewhere around 300 dollars a year.

5000 quid is a lot. I spend about 10 a month on recreational items, excluding phone usage which is about 3 a month. Well, I guess I'm only 11. At least I don't have a job. Then I would waste it all anyway. XD

lol, 5k is like 1/5th of what I make in a year, idk anyone that can freely spend that kind of cash in a year. I typically spend about 150 dollars per set when one comes out, so thats only 600 dollars a year. And thats being generous. Otherwise, I don't spend much money.

Revising what I said earlier, I may actually spend 5k if you count sports as games. Tennis tournaments and stuff cost money...
Nah, more like 2k.

Some of you must be exaggeratingating. 6k? Seriously?
I actually counted once - in 2009 I spent £300 on games and game related things.
I have to say 6 and 5k is quite humerous.

Not exaggerating. I dropped $8k on a set of three trophy issue cards this year (paying them off bit by bit, but regardless the end total is the same). I think I'm well above the $5k bracket :p

Let's see where I can put this. I spend probably 2k each year on devices such as the DS, games, ect.

I don't buy videogames or cards often, and toys are something I almost never buy anymore, so I'm easily under $1,000 a year as far as Pokémon merchandise goes.

Factoring in other things, I'm spending well under $2,000 a year on things for myself. 99% of the money I make from work goes to my parents to pay the bills or get food for the family.

Have you been to Worlds? It's like 2k alone. Nats hotel is ~$160 a night. Gas is a lot. Regionals hotel is like $80 a night. Box of each set is $320 a year. GA marathon is $500 total. Yeah, its a lot. Only people who care a lot about the game and are highly competitive/good spend this much though...

I know what ya mean. When you have sumthing you really want, you'd pay anything for it thats What i always do. Especially my income is over 4,000 per month, I can SPEND SPEND and SPEND! Usually I dont even cook and just go out for meals. I like to save few hundreds ( 600 - 900) each month and spend it on January, I mean look I got more clothing for everyone last week lol

4k a month, nice. Now that I think about it I probably spend $400-500.
