Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck (Politoed / Poliwrath / Crobat)

Hey, Pokebeach! I've been out of the game for about 5 years now, but I'm just now getting back into it, and the new Phantom Gate scans gave me an idea for a new take on Politoed.

Pokemon (21):

  • 4 Poliwag (Furious Fists)
    3 Poliwhirl (Furious Fists)
    3 Politoed (Furious Fists)
    2 Poliwrath (Furious Fists)
    3 Zubat (Phantom Gate)
    3 Golbat (Phantom Gate)
    2 Crobat (Phantom Gate)
    1 Celebi EX (Boundaries Crossed)
Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums (39):

  • 3 Dimensional Valley

    4 Professor Sycamore
    2 Pokemon Fan Club
    2 AZ (Phantom Gate)
    2 Lysandre
    2 Colress
    2 Shauna

    4 Max Potion
    4 Startling Megaphone
    4 Ultra Ball
    2 Rare Candy
    2 Evosoda
    2 Muscle Band
    1 Silver Mirror
    1 Hypnotoxic Laser
    1 Sacred Ash
    1 Dowsing Machine
Energy (0):

Strategy:
I think it's pretty obvious. Politoed's ability allows the other Poli's to attack for free; Celebi EX allows Politoed and Poliwrath to use Poliwhirl's Finishing Blow for free (it's Poliwhirl's attack, so it's covered by Politoed's ability even though Politoed's own attacks are not); the new 'Bats are there to put damage counters all over the opponent's playfield, allowing Finishing Blow to deal 100 damage rather than 50; Dimensional Valley is there to allow the 'Bats to attack for free if they end up in the active spot; AZ is there to scoop them back to my hand so I can play them again.

Potential flaws: This is the first deck I've attempted to design since Nationals '09, lol. I made it up just now, so it hasn't been playtested at all, but I'm a little scared of VerGen, Garbodor, and Seismitoad, all of which I expect to be quite popular. My trainers and supporters probably need some work, but I don't really know what to do with them. Like I said, this is my first deck in 5 years, so I'm not very familiar with all the various trainers and supporters. After I playtest it (hopefully this weekend) I'll have a little better idea how to improve it, but for now, I'd love to hear you guys' advice.

Okay, so if I were to replace the 'bat line with Forretress, what do you think of this? No AZ because I figure I might as well only use cards that are actually released at this point :p

Somehow I feel even less confident about this list, lol. I went 1-1 with the stadiums, because they both benefit me, and I figure if one stadium is less advantageous against the opponent's deck (for instance, plasmas aren't affected by Frozen City, and I don't want to give the opponent's evolutions extra HP with Training Center) I can play the other one. I feel like 4 Megaphone is necessary to stand any chance against Garbodor, but if I get item-locked by Seismitoad in addition, I think I'm SOL. I mean, without Politoed's ability, I can't attack, ever, so my only hope is to megaphone away Garbodor's tool.

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

Or Crobat line (Witch Dusklops?) or Poli line, but two cloggy lines of stage 2 pokemons that dosnt really have sinergy (outside not needing energy for damage) i think cant work

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

I believe there is synergy myself.
Golbat and Crobat both add damage enabling poliwrath to deal 100-120 a turn for free.
and every though stage 2 lines are clunky in this case it's ok because both the stage 1 and stage 2 evolutions of Zubat serve the same purpose.
I'd like to try this deck myself when the set comes out

I agree, I think there's actually pretty good synergy with them and that the two stage-2 lines aren't really a problem in this deck. I think this is a cool idea, seems like it would be fun to play.

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

I gotta say, this deck is going to be clunky. REALLY clunky. But it would be very fun to use. :D Maybe add Training Center instead of Dimensional Valley and have the bats as support only? I think that would be better. Let me know what you think! :D

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

I generally prefer unique and fun over archetypal and competitive :p Five years ago, I took an Octillery deck to the Missouri State Championships that ran something like 40+ energy, lol. I think I went 3-2 or 3-3, thanks in part to a teched Mewtwo Lvl X.

Still, I would like to actually win battles, so I'm gonna try to make the deck as good as it can be through testing and tweaking.

Training Center is one possible substitute stadium for Dimensional Valley, and Frozen City is another. It'd hurt the opponent without affecting me, since I won't ever be playing any energy at all. Having so many pokemon in my deck who'd never be able to attack under any circumstance makes me nervous, though, and the bat family's attacks are both fairly decent and free with DV in play, so that's what I'm leaning toward right now.

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

I hadn't thought about Forretress, actually. I wasn't sure what it did, but I looked it up, and it might work. If I went with it instead of the bats, I could use a different gym... I'll keep it in mind, thanks :)!

It would also free up a lot of space to thicken up your poli line and add in more consistency cards

RE: Zero-Energy PoliBat Deck

I edited your new list into the first post. Please do that in the future.
