That sounds like a ton of fun! I love debating
It was always one of my favorite clubs and Model United Nations has a lot of debating in it which is why I think I had so much fun
I'll type up my friday:
We had to leave by 7:30 and we piled onto the bus. My research partner sat next to me so that we could double check eachothers information. (the event had the 300 or so kids split into six groups. I was in the United Nations Security Council Similation A. There was two similations for each group.. there was also a human rights and a minority group as well).
Anyway we talked about or information and both agreed being the Democratic Republic of Congo in a debate about not using child soldiers and making sure all children go to school.... was going to be difficult. I did find a great resource though that I used as my back bone during most of the debate (last month the SC brought DRC in to talk about what to do about their country, DRC turned out to be a fan of UNSC).
Anyway we arrived and we had opening ceremonies. Their were three guest speakers, but I was whispering back and forth with Pakistan through most of it. I was listening and taking notes and all, but I was also talking
After that was over each committee left and followed their chair to their similation room.
On the way Pakistan, Guatamala, DRC(me), and Luxemburg talked a lot since it was a decently long walk. We mainly talked about how it would have been great if North Korea was here because they would have been fun to play "You cant tell me what to do! I'll blow you up!" That conversation was a blast and ended with us deciding that if NOrth Korea ever showed up to a UN meeting they would bring a button with them with a smiley face for releasing their nuclear weapons.
We got to the debate room and started with roll call. It is the UNSC, so I was one of three countries that were not officially their but invited to participate in the debate. That meant I was not allowed to vote on resolutions or ammendements, which sucked.
The debate got rolling and I was passing a lot of notes around the classroom. The main countries I was talking to were: Uganda, Pakistan, Guatamala, Australia, Luxemburg, and Russia. The person sitting to my right was China so we talked often as well, but not with full on notes.
The first unmoderated caucus rolled around and before I could meet with Australia (I had scheduled a meeting with him) two countries came up to me saying they believe in my ideas and want to form a block with me. This made me laugh, but I told them Sure, just remember I am technically invisible and can't vote when it matters.
By the end two blocks were formed. the DRC's block (including the big country of Russia and UK and consent with USA, and France. By consent I met they agreed with our information, but preferred to work on a resolution with Australia). My block had eleven signatories and you only needed nine to pass the resolution. We were excited.
(random fun moment: At lunch Australia came up to me with parts of their resolution and asked my opinion. this still just made me laugh because I DONT COUNT)
The meeting was coming to a close and the two resolutions were presented. Ours was Draft Resolution 1.2, Voting time came around. Our chair mentioned that was was very proud and surprised with how well both of the resolutions turned out. First resolution was voted on, was missing one vote from majority (they had 8). Second resolution was going around and everything seemed great. People were saying yes, USA (who wanted the one he wrote) was kind enough to abstain. The last person was standing to cast his vote. CHINA. China, the one we had heard mumbling that he wanted to try and use his veto power. All 17 of us sort of glared at him "Dont do it!" BUT he vetoed it. Making us the one group that did not pass a final resolution. We gave him the "Most likely to Become a Dictator Award". We also ended up giving Russia the "Funnies Delegate Award" because during resolution type up time. I had typed up our resolution and then she turned it into the proper format. When she changed it she had a badly placed comma creating: We are greatly disturbed with the amount of children in the world, that are being affected by war.
And during the award ceremony I got the "Outstanding Delegate Award" or second place and was the only kid to win an award from my school
I just find it really cool I got second when I had the DRC
