It's not that he missed the timing, it's just that he chained Forbidden Lance to Forbidden Lance (making the other one completely useless) and tried to activate Mirror Force in response to something that Mirror Force could not be activated in response to.

I dueled this guy with my Prophecy deck, he used some weird anti-meta. He sets 4, summons Fossil Dyna, and ends. I draw and summon Temperance, use Spellbook of Secrets to get Power, then Power on Temperance. I attack, and he uses Forbidden Lance...followed by another. I respond with Spellbook of Wisdom, declaring spells, and he says I cannot because he used them in the damage step...mind you, I did not declare I was even going into the damage step. He argues with me a bit, then he activates Mirror Force, since "I can chain it to wisdom because it's spell speed 2 like a quick spell".
Kill me now.
