Omega Soul, I heard about New 3DS, but that isn't what I was expecting. It's not actually a new handheld, it's like the 3DS' DSi if that makes sense. It's just a mid gen redesign (only the DSi never had a high profile exclusive like Xenoblade Chronicles, it had exclusives, but nothing worth noting). What this tells me is that the 8th gen console may be coming later than I thought, I thought that 8th gen might be ending in about 2 years, but if they're coming out with an upgrade like this, they're probably trying to extend this generation another year or two than I thought.

Continuing this conversation here because it's off topic in the ORAS post game thread.

3DS isn't failing, no, but next gen's timing is going to depend on both anyway. And they won't be able to keep both of them on the market forever, remember how people started to lose interest in the Wii when Microsoft and Sony came out with Kinect and Move? By then, the Wii became obsolete and Nintendo was pretty much forced to respond by moving on to next gen. Likewise, at some point 3DS and Wii sales will start to taper off at some point when the consoles begin to show their age, and I wager that that will happen sooner rather than later.

Also, Nintendo has mentioned that the next gen consoles are going to be "like brothers" (think PS4/Vita relationship), so that leads me to believe that they're going to release them around the same time (probably in time that they could do a holiday bundle, say both the console and handheld for about $500). So that would pretty much pressure the new handheld to arrive earlier than perhaps natural.
