If you want it to be, then yes. A lot of games/stories don't specify genders of animal/creature characters anyways, unless there's a point.

Well, the only point of it before was to determine who your character was. It shouldn't matter in this game since you can choose your character now. You can just assume it's a boy or a girl.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. Actually, I'm big PMD fan to begin with, and this version is a total shock. The graphics and gameplay are levels above the PMD: Explorers games right off the bat and they fixed a lot of flaws by getting rid of the 'belly' issue and combining the item storage/bank with the Deposit box.
