(1) GS REMAKE COMING? [5/2]

Wahooooo I remember when i bought this game and i was like 3 or 4 and reds pikachu lets just say he was in the pokemon center for a while. Wait why gold and silver party balls and in the image it looked like chimchar was getting excited not in a disgusting way just the look on his face.

I'll be delighted if this happens for SHEER NOSTALGIA.

Gold and Silver are definitely my favourite games in the series for the above reason. In no way would I suggest that DPt isn't technically superior in every fashion to the three previous generations, what with the excellent game mechanics, the look and feel of the game, and breathtaking scope - including in the story of the game which Platinum took to another level - and not to mention that they have the benefit of being on Nintendo's most innovative handheld console to date. But we have to remember that GSC came some years earlier and their simplicity was part of their charm at the time. It took the RBY formula and made it perfect (again, at the time). It came at the crest of the Pokémon wave, in the wake of the hugely popular RBY and when Pokémon was literally a craze. Part of my enjoyment of those games came solely from the excitement of meeting new Pokémon, to this date my favourite generation, exploring a new region for the first time, and the thrill of being able to go back to the familiar territory of Kanto and meet many old faces. The story which people are talking a lot about is pretty simple when I think back on it, but for that reason it was great. You just lost yourself in the Pokémon world. And Johto had a certain feel to it that I just can't put my finger on. I can't explain quite why I like it so much, but it felt magical. It was one of the best parts of my childhood, something I grew up with, something that truly took me in when I imported the American versions of Gold and Silver and started to play for the very first time. And here I still am.

Yes, the game isn't PERFECT in retrospect. The battle mechanics, berry growing, real time and so on are all features that have been improved upon by now, but if they HADN'T been improved on, what would have been the point of bringing out new generations? GSC came along to build on RBY, and the trend will continue. If anything, I feel the 3rd gen took a few steps back from the excellence that had been GSC, but DPt have been fortunate enough to bring the franchise into a tremendous position in terms of quality and restored a lot of popularity. Just imagine GSC with these improvements. I was skeptical of FRLG before they came out, but as it turns out I'd rather play the same game but improved (GENUINELY, something Sega should have learned from when releasing Sonic Adventure DX ;)) and the same will probably be true for GSDS. A chance for old fans to relive one of the games they loved most when growing up, and a great opportunity for new fans to truly see why fans hold these games in such high regard. Without being too cynical, Nintendo could very well make the big bucks here and they'd be a fool to turn down the legion of fans who are actually willing to buy their revered Gold and Silver games once again. And I'll be one of them.

I can say I am over excited for this awesome news if it does happen. But, I will be ultimately saddened on one condition.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY COMPLETELY RUIN IT IN THE REMAKE!?!

If they do, it will turn so many people off Pokemon...I mean, we all know and love the second generation games, but we loved those. If they don't completely copy it, and maybe add in a few new things here and there, then it will be a disaster. I guess we will just have to wait and see...=/

I wouldn't worry about anything the team behind the main Pokemon RPGs does for now. They seem pretty good at resisting the urge to "jump the shark". They've never done anything drastic, so I see no reason to be concerned.

Looking at those two reasons, the only way either RS or DP will be remade is if that most of the Pokemon from their generation is unobtainable. Ruby and Sapphire certainly wasn't popular as the generations before it (because it took away many features that made GS popular), and the reason DP isn't as popular is because a lot of fans did not like the Pokemon in the generation. Fans also expected many of the features that are in DP to be in DP. GS blew the top off the expectation list that was given for the next Pokemon game after Yellow.

No, it's you who aren't satisfied with the Sinnoh Pokémon and are pointing to lower sales numbers of Diamond and Pearl compared to Gold and Silver and Red and Blue as "proof." If you do the math, you'll see that, adjusted for the amount of time the games have been out, Diamond and Pearl far far outsold Gold and Silver. It's the same deal if you take a look at sales during the first weekend, the first week, the first month, and the first year.

I gathered some sales numbers and have divided them by the amount of years they've been out, rounded to the nearest whole number:

Pokémon Red and Blue: 20.68 million in 12 years; 1.72 million per year
Pokémon Gold and Silver: 15.2 million in 9 years; 1.68 million per year
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: 13.0 million in 6 years; 2.17 million per year
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: 16.48 million in 2 years; 8.24 million per year
(Find me sources that prove the numbers of sales are significantly different.)

While it might be unfair to compare games of different ages as game sales sputter out over time and inevitably get smaller, we do have these two facts:
1. Despite the longer amount of time Red and Blue have been out, it still has a higher per-year average than Gold and Silver.
2. Diamond and Pearl have outsold Gold and Silver in less than a third of the time.

By all means is the 2nd-generation games NOT the most popular generation.

This is amusing.

On the first paragraph, I actually like a lot of Sinnoh Pokemon and most Pokemon in general are OK by me. However, looking at some comments throughout the time I've been on PokeBeach, I've heard a lot of people say that the first 251 Pokemon have a better design then the latest 242 do.

Funny. I knew Gold and Silver were not the highest selling, so don't even start with this "using sales numbers" tactic, as I never did, nor would have I because I knew Blue and Red had beat it out. (I didn't that DP didn't beat it out, but that doesn't come as a shock anyway.)

Also, you have to look in terms of "fads". The elementary age group is Pokemon's main target (you know that's true) and elememtary kids tend to have tons of fads. It shows that Pokemon was already starting to decline in 2001, just shortly after GS came out. If the kids weren't into Pokemon during the GSC era, they wouldn't buy the games, obviously. In DPPt, Pokemon is starting to become mainstream again. Another reason it is popular is that it made up for the "lackluster" RSE. DP felt like the true sequel to Generation 2.

Ok, I will admit that DP popluar, and that I blundered because I'm annoyed when I see comment like "if GSDS is made, RS remake will have to come." However, I never mentioned anything about sales numbers. On that subject, generation popularity isn't always based on the number of games a generation sold. I'm pretty sure there are at least a few fans who don't always buy the games. Sure, it could be the best way of measuring the popularity (if you must only measure by one area of the franschise) of a generation, but you must also remember the TCG, and some people don't like video games in general. However, they can still be fans of the franchise.

Also, at the time, there were probably less fans at the time, but not all due to the "fads" I was talking about earlier. Another factor that is just that some people dodn't even know about the franchise back in 2001, but do now. It's kind of like a disease (not a positive way of looking at it, I know, but it is a good analogy): The more time you let it spread, the more victims the disease will have. Likewise with Pokemon, the more you have it on the market, the more fans and buyers you'll get.

I also realize some of this is based on opinion (not neccessarily mine, though), but opinions are still important. Somethings can only be determined by opinions, such as, what do you know, franchise popularity and generation (in the case of Pokemon) popularity.

You can all doubt a GS remake by any means. That's your personal opinion. However, I think many of you critics of a GS remake won't be left with much to say on the subject after Sunday.

That doesn't prove you'll outsell us. While odds are it will, until you hit that number, it's not concrete evidence you can win. :p

But seriously. If I find out the announcement ISN'T gold & silver remakes, I swear I will manage to make my body teleport to Japan, and STRANGLE whoever is in charge of making the games!!!(Don't judge me!)

Sales numbers ARE important in that it decides whether or not Nintendo will be able to deem something as profitable and thus if it gets released or not. An example is Mother 3. It has an enormous cult following, Nintendo of America is constantly getting demands for it to release an English-language version, and EarthBound has a mountain of nostalgia behind it. However, EarthBound proved to be a poor seller and a money sink for Nintendo of America, which has made Nintendo of America wary of any involvement in the Mother series.

I also only refer to the video games because we're talking about a potential video game remake here. The people invested in the show or the card game who don't play the video games will most likely not be interested in another video game.

You also need to look at this from the standpoint of not PokéBeach, which is a comparatively microscopic portion of the audience as a whole. Of course people will be critical of the 4th generation Pokémon. When has there ever been a time where something hotly anticipated comes out and there wasn NOT a bunch of Internet fans critical of it? My experiences in the world at large, such as the university I was at when Diamond and Pearl were new, brought me to the consensus that the 4th generation Pokémon are curious-looking creatures and that people are happy to be seeing new Pokémon.

I strongly believe that the opinion that the 4th generation Pokémon are bad and uncreative is a result of the fallacy of an unfair sample. Then again, I might be guilty of it myself, as I find the 1st generation of Pokémon to be my least favorite and I lack the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.

In any case, I'd be happy to see a Gold/Silver remake, as I'm curious as to how the music will be remixed. I'd buy it. However, I would still say that it's a bad marketing decision for Nintendo if it makes such a move. The Pokémon fandom will lap it up the way some of you guys lap up every last thing with the Pokémon logo on it, but the masses are not as praiseful of the 2nd generation games as the fandom.

If WPM says that they are coming out soon he is most likely legit about the news as he is very good about what is and is not coming. As I have stated in past posts I have known pretty much because I saw a blurb one day on Serebii that there was a possibility that they were coming and with Jasmine briefly in D/P gives us a slight incling that the remakes are on their way. I sure hope it is set pretty much the same way with new additions as well as items and Pokemon. I wonder how the Pokedx will be added? I am guessing the same as D/P or the way they did it in Platinum. I hope they make the legendary dogs catchable so we don't have to trade for all three or restart FR/LG to get the legendary dogs because that will take a very long time to do. I also hope they make Lugia and Ho-oh easy to catch rather than event. Wait a minute. THEY HAVE TO MAKE REMAKES. I just realized because the only way to get Lugia and Ho-oh IS to go though an event OR XD/Colosseum. Not everyone can get them except those with DS or can go themselves so there will be remakes for sure now that I think of it for that reason. It would not be fair if they did not make remakes because Pokemon is in a whole new generation now and with newcomers starting and never got their chance. This will be perfect for them and even with the new remakes definetly coming now that I think of it then we veterans will have a good time teaching our newcomers to the world of Pokemon. With this to think about this will be a great time to remake them. Since I never really got to play Gold or Silver and will give me the experience I never had. I sure would like to try the newer versions because I have always wanted Gold or Silver but I only got 5 minutes on my friends Silver so I sure would like to try it out. This will be an awesome experience for me and I am almost positive now that there will be remakes.:)

Why do i keep seeing people bashing the idea of RS remakes sooner or later they'll have to happen just like GS are apparently about to, the gen 3 games will be deemed obsolete in afew years due to the DSi then functions like palpark will become useless and we'll need a way to get Kyorge Groudon and Rayquaza onto the latest games which may very well be generation five by that time

All i can say about those against the RS theory is see you in 3/4 years, when this GS remake discusion is replaced with the RS remake discusion (if we do enter a fifth generation)

If there is no G/S remake then no one will be able to get Lugia or Ho-oh unless they get it from someone here or Colosseum/XD or go to an event. They ways they have the 2 Pokemon is pretty bad because most of us can't do those 3 things for obvious reasons. If they want to keep everyone coming back for more then they must make remakes because the ways they do it not is kind of bad if you think about it.:)

There is a non GameFreak/Nintendo G/S remake availiable...

Link removed. Although you are trying to contribute to the discussion, this counts as posting for the sake of advertising. You can advertise in your sig as long as it does not link to websites that distribute pirated video games. ~DRK176

My guess is that Nintendo needs a new way to promote the DSi, and if there is a G/S remake, it will problably be for the DSi, and only the DSi. If it's for the regular DS, though, my life will be complete (As soon as I meet Richard Horvitz ;))

I agree with you, especially on the Richard Horvitz thing. I think the game will have some DSi exclusive content, but I can't imagine it only being for the DSi.

They better make it for the DS period. I don't see why not.:)

That is what I think Nintendo is doing. Plus it doesn't hurt their bottom to repackage an older game and make more profit on it.

If they re-make GSC, I think it will be for the DS. I don't think they would release it on the DSi or Virtual Console, because they would lose potential sales. They probably wouldn't make it for the Wii, because it is not a portable system, and would make it more difficult to battle and trade with others.

I think they probably wouldn't market it for the DSi because the GBA slot is still needed. It would make people angry to have to own Diamond / Pearl / Platinum in order to transfer their GBA Pokémon over.

As for Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald remakes, for the time being, that is out of the question, because it is too recent. If we wait for another series or two to go by, then there may be demand for a remake.

How could they make it DSi only? There's no slot that plays DSi games, is there?

Yeah, this is what I think. There should be a DS-GBA slot compatibility.

I'm still buying both anyways.

This isn't mystery Dungeon. Think about it this way, the DS version would have more capabilities (GBA slot insertion) than the newer system, the DSi. Why would nintendo want the one on the cheaper system to have more capabilities? Money is a leading factor in everything.
