(1) Isshu Starter's English Names Revealed! [11/22]

Wasn't Orre designed after the arizona desert or something? I don't recall it getting a specialised name.

Probably, but Colosseum and XD aren't exactly in the same vein as the other games. I'm talking about this being the first generation that the main region of the main RPG is designed after a place outside of Japan.

I dunno if it's fair that a mainstream game is more critically judged than a spinoff game... to put it another way, that's like saying being a spinoff game equals "license to screw up".

Besides this isn't really a case of whether or not the region name has a right to be changed. I could bet all my money that if people liked the name, they wouldn't care less if it was a romanised "Isshu" or an original name.

I'm not judging the spinoff games. I'm merely point out the fact that they take different paths than the regular games, meaning that as far as the main RPG is concerned, Unova is the first region based on a country other than Japan, and to honor this milestone, the region was given a different name in the English version.

If that were truly as you predicted, I'd love to see how NOA plans to honour the first female professor in the main RPG so far...

I still don't think NOA needs a strict reason to give a different name. If you think about it, there was never any laws or rules dictating the nomenclature. I mean... when Saturn, Mars and Jupiter kept their names but Akagi and Pluto did not, was there even a reason why it was done like that? I doubt it.

Reason gives meaning to stuff and I guess stuff sounds more acceptable if backed up by it. But I think some stuff does not need to be rationalised so much. People who hate unova will come up with 10 reasons why it stinks. People who like it will have 10 reasons why it rocks. Most of it is just personal ranting anyway...

Charon isn't a planet either.

Pluto is still named Pluto, it's just no longer a planet.

NOA might have been able to name the past regions whatever they wanted, but they decided to keep the Japanese names. However, this generation was different, and NOA for the first time decided to give the region a new name. The reason is most likely that the inspiration this time around is the US and not Japan.

As for Professor Araragi, I predict that she'll have yet another tree name.

However, maybe for the first time the region's native electric rodent, Emonga, will have a different English name instead of keeping the Japanese one.

As others already stated, the Unova name change was horribly unnecessary. I absolutely refuse to call it that, EVER. It dosen't even SOUND good. I don't care about them having some "right" or "honor" involved in the name change, or whatever other convoluted excuses the staunch defenders of NOA can come up with, it's totally uncalled for.

And yes, I will still call it Isshu forever, my mind won't just suddenly change over time and I won't just "adapt". I still call alot of 4th gen monsters by their JPN names if I hate the NOA ones, such as Yukimenoko, Megayanma, and Beequeen, and refuse to use the NOA ones. Unfortunately, early horrible names were hardwired into my brain and can't be replaced, such as "Geodude" -.- But with the 4th and 5th gen, I was exposed to the JPN names first.

As far as the new starter names though, they are perfectly fine with me, hopefully the evolutions won't be cheesy either.

now I feel tsutaja as snivy, the name fit with it's look, but Oshawott is still complicated ,i can't just imagine 'Oshawott use watergun!! Oshawott I choose you!!"I have to wait until it appears in the anime, also isshu and besto wishio, now it's called unova are they going to change the series name too ?? I love best wishes :S
I can't wait to see the rest

You have a right to not like the name, but calling the change "convoluted" is a bit ridiculous since it makes perfect sense in the context that this region is based off of the USA and not Japan and that this region was kind of meant to start the whole process over (far away, Route 1, no past Pokemon or evolutions of past Pokemon). It wasn't just some random change.

Frankly, the reason people don't seem to like Unova is because they're used to Isshu and not because Isshu is such an awesome name while Unova sounds dumb. If the region was simply known as Unova from the start, I can guarantee you that you would have enjoyed the name as much as you currently enjoy Isshu. People don't like change.

The idea that you despise Yanmega but like Megayanma is pretty funny, though :p

Apparently that's how fan mentality works these days. There's no more "i dislike it" these days, it's always got to be something expressed in a more extreme fashion ("It's a disaster!" or "It's horribly unnecessary!" or "Hearing the name alone gave me cancer!")

This is why I don't like debates with fans or haters, their viewpoints are way too polarised to make for a productive discussion.

I wonder what would happen if I ever tried to make a thread arguing against the progression into Gen V, as I honestly feel there needs to be a cap on adding new pokemon or new attacks

People also don't like stagnation either apparently.

But hey it's all about finding excuses isn't it? ;)

Don't like a change = "OMG it is different now it is crud, If it wasn't broke why'd you try to fix it"

Don't like a recurrent element = "OMG same old stuff can't they innovate? Where is the originality"

This applies to every game franchise. Just check their forums. Especially those really popular ones. There is a theory that the more popular a game is, the more demanding and spoilt its fanbase is.

Ah, now it makes sense. Very interesting. I always like the names better once I know what they mean.

So its a canadian otter that crosses a river. This is highly poetic if not mildly amusing.

Oh, well durr, it was right at the top of the Wikipedia page for the city of Oshawa.

The name Oshawa originates from the Ojibwa term aazhaway, meaning "the crossing place" or just "(a)cross".

Will admit, I lol'd

This is why I love the art fandom 100 times more than the regular fandom. At least they channel their thoughts and emotions into pretty pictures ^^

^Screw "Smugleaf", that's my Snivy's new nickname :D

native americans aren't canadians
Eh, political correctness - The indigenous people of Canada, which is part of the Americas....

indigenous to the Americas, not just Canada

to the North American continent... even South America..

they aren't just narrowed down to Canada, so they're not Canadian.... unless you're talking about a specific tribe that originated in Canada.

We just assumed Canada since there's a city in Canada that shares the same origin as Oshawott's name. No need to get all technical ;)
