(1) Isshu Starter's English Names Revealed! [11/22]

I wish America would get its head out of its Bottom. The thing is, stupid Pokémon.com ruined Isshu for the rest of us that arn't in America, and that's most people! Why did Pokémon.com have to change the name of the reigon now? They kept it nearly the same everywhere else, so why change it now?
Unova sounds more like a Cave. (Containing a legendary Pokémon).

What's next? naming 6th gen reigon Mt. Mortar? or Victory Road? Perhaps Mt. Moon?

The 6th region is gonna be Ohio.

Honestly, I think it's the two-syllable names that are disliked at first

Hm, that would mean Gen III got a ton of dislike considering all 3 starters had 2-syllable English names.

Oshawott makes me think of saying "Ursawott", so now I think of Miju as an Otterbear.

Snivy is ok, and I saw that name coming. But now I think of Snivley whenever I see Tsutaa. :S

Tepig makes me think of Tenpin bowling.

The 6th region is gonna be Ohio.

I think it's going to be based on California, and it's going to be called Newlania. New + Land + California. Though, it'll have to be in Latin, so the actual name will be Calovra. (California new land).

Oh I know, the whole game is ruined now because they changed the name of the region! Horror of horrors! And how dare NOA decide to rename the region that is actually based off the US instead of Japan! Who gave them the freedom to be original? Objection! [/sarcasm]

^^Really? We're debating the sixth region already? For all we know it's the Great Lakes, Florida, Spain, Alaska, or the UK.
Is the name Snivy a combination of snivel and ivy, snide and ivy, or snake and ivy? I kind of like the first two, but the last one still bothers me.

More like how dare NOA do something that make me not happy~

Maybe in Gen VI, the game will come with a pre-startup phase where you fill in ALL the details of the names YOU want. That way each player can define his personal preferred name for every species, attack, item and NPC in the game.

I will name the prof in my game Professor Badass, and my region will be Hogwarts and the leader of the villain team will be Osama bin Laden. The legendaries will have their species named after hollywood celebrities.

In Gen VII there'll be no game, just pure source code (I know people who will appreciate this) so that the game will finally be made for the fans, by the fans. Drawing materials supplied too, for designing your own pokemon.

It's Snake + Ivy.
Hmm... Is it Snay-vee, or Snai-vee?

Is it just me, or do Vast White, and Deep Black seem a bit... racist? Reshiram has some light grey on it, and Zekrom has some blue on it, so they're not 100% White, or 100% Black.

Oshawott? Washalott. Oshawott? Ursawott. Oshawott? Wreckabott. Oshawott? Iwasshot.

^Not Sadam Huissein? Or Napoleon?

Saddam is planned to be a species of flying pokemon in my naming scheme for Gen VI.

Napoleon would probably suit a Gym Leader more. Or the name of a Town.

It's just you.

Seeing as how you are the first and only person here who has expressed that sentiment.

Wow these names are going to take some getting used to XD
Unova actually sounds pretty cool, as for "teh" starter names, they dont really bother me becuase im pretty sure their final evolutions will keep their japanese names, exept for Mijumaru/Oshawott (just as cool name as Mudkip XD)

Snivy.. wow.. failure? Even kids predicted this name.. The only thing that is going uphill are the number of Pokemon, the rest in going downhill so fast, it isn't even funny anymore.

Err, guys, isn't Tepig a rearrangement of "Piglet", similar to how Flygon is a rearrangement of "Dragonfly"? I'm really surprised no one thought about this yet.

A lot of people suggested Snivy in another thread and I thought it sounded quite neat. I'm glad TPCI made it the official name.

I still can't spell Oshawott correctly lol.

Yeah, I can vaguely remember the name release and it seemed to be the majority opinion -- same with the Gen 4 starters (who likewise all had two-syllable names). Then again, a lot of the fandom states their distaste for just about everything when it first comes out; there was a lot of hate for Mudkip as a Pokémon when it was first revealed in Japan.

I don't see why people are having such a hard time with the Isshu/Unova name change -- just because precedent is to keep the name (or romanize to something easier to pronounce), nothing dictates that region names must stay the same.

Ugh.... Tepig. I liked Pokabu a lot better. And Unova. Wow. Sad. Just bad. Isshu was good enough to begin with. Everything else is ok I guess.

Tepig is better than I hoped. They have slightly ruined the game for us peeps out in England, but you never know. We will probably have one based on Europe next.

I cannot believe they called him Snivy. It's ok, I guess. Oshawott is the best possible name. I'm still picking Tepig in this region of Unova. I'm personally for the Latin on that...

With this whole debate about the names, I am personally inclined to agree with both. It works with both interpretations, and since none of you work in the Pokemon Translation Office, I think you should all accept the POSSIBLE validity of both origins, though I certainly feel that both roots have some bearing on 'Unova'.

I believe Oshawott's name is based on Oshawa (Oshawa, Ontario) and Otter. Oshawa is known for the fur trade, which included otter fur.

How is Unova easier to pronounce than Isshu? Is it oo-no-vah, or you-no-vah?
Like I said before, Unova sounds more like a cave with a Legendary Pokémon. If NOA really doesn't care enough to give Isshu a proper name, then they might as well call Kanto Cerulean Cave, Johto Mt. Silver, Hoenn Island Cave and Sinnoh Hall of Origin.

:( I liked the japanese names better xD oh well, i guess America screwed the names up on this generation.
