The word staff is used far more commonly than administrator, moderator, or contributor in my experience. I can't see how it could be unclear to anyone, even "newbies".
Staff makes more sense to me, because I get they are working on the website in a variety of ways. Contributor made me wonder what they were contributing. Time, effort, or money. Maybe you get the title for taking starving Moderators out to eat.
