(2) All Names Possibly Revealed, More 'Black' and 'White' English Names Revealed [1/13]

umm... "We Maractus, Sawka beats!?" i'll never get spanish.

any way, you say this list was from IGN? what was their source?

TomSkylark: I've tried to show that, if this were a word that were a less "debatable" slur there would be question as to the poor choice, as people will continually trot out the old "Wait, but it means 'cigarette' in Britain!" line, even though tracing the etymology of "friend" further--so long as one wants to trace out the vagaries of language, and understand the larger contexts for it, anyway--shows that the reason the words coincide is because folks used to burn sodomites/homosexuals at the stake. The insult therefore insinuates that gay people are little more than kindling, or at least ought to be. This is the part where a "The More You Know" star flies across the forum.

I could see your point if a pokémon had been blatently named a slur. That doesn't seem to be the case. Addtionally, based on the quoted section, you are reading very far into the consequencial slur. Now, I will state.. yes.. if someone latches on to this.. like APPARENTLY the pokémon fan community.. then yeah. It could be a problem. But again, like I stated before. I didn't even see the problem the first time I read it. I was just trying to figure out the basis of the name so I'd pronounce it right. I've have asked 12 people from my pokémon league today what they thought of the name after I wrote it on a sheet of paper. Most of the simply wanted to what pokémon would have such a wierd name or how to pronounce it. Once I showed the pic of Cofagrigus, they got it. But no one was like OMG BAD WORD! Not until I told them about this thread.

By the way, since it's Coffin+egregrious... it should be pronounced Cough-uh-gregous. Cofa is like Sofa. Fuh Fuh.

Speaking of pronunciations... how should I be pronouncing Zorua? I've been sayin it like Zore-oo-uh. Dunno if that's right...

@gleaf

well, idk about my spanish skills.
I need them. i live in NEW mexico.

@everyone

i still cant find anything about these names being true OR false.
i will LOLercoaster if the names are fake, and metalizard got banned for pretty much no reason. (that was kinda mean to say. sry, metalizard)

@SuperMatt142:

Yeah, I guess a larger problem is that it's hard to tell how a lot of the new names are pronounced until we hear them in the anime or elsewhere. This is true of every generation, of course, but this is the first time I've been part of an internet community with which to debate such things at launch--I wasn't really that involved in Gen IV launch, and I missed Gen III outright when it was first released.

Without getting entirely off-topic, to return to the question of "outgrowing Pokemon," I'd definitely suggest folks who feel themselves getting that-a-ways might consider picking up one of the Shin Megami Tensei games (especially one of the Persona games). The gameplay is similar to Pokemon in some respects (although the series pre-dates Pokemon by around four years, and there are some really notable differences), but the tone is much darker. I've heard it called "Pokemon for grownups," which is a problematic statement at best, and doesn't really do justice to either series, but it's a fantastically good series in any event, especially for folks who might feel themselves needing to branch out.

@Augustice9

Not all are confimed.. some are. Go here! http://www.pokemonblackwhite.com/en-us/pokemon/new-pokemon/

Of course they're not confirmed, that's why the thread itself says POSSIBLY revealed. Some of them are good, and most of those are the names that have been revealed for a while now. I mean come on, sawk? Throh?

YES! exactly! GF would have told other sites to get the word out OR the other sites thought this "leak" is fake! Great logic, Gleafeon!

Well, my magic 8 ball's not giving direct answers, so my goal is to see if they're real or not! who's with me!?

Fair enough. Yea, the pronunciation thing is often a problem before launches. I had a real hard time with Kyogre. Kyo-grey.. Ky-o-gur... WHAT TO DO? Lol. As for outgrowing pokémon.. that happens I suppose. I, however, am 25 and my wife is 24. We still play it pretty often and we run a league. I find the "pokemon for grownups" line hilarious and totally agree with you. Pokémon CAN be a really sophisticated or really simple game. Depends on what you invest in it. Since I EV train, work to fill dexes, chain... it's pretty tough and fulfilling. Plus coming up with good stategies for pokémon people don't commonly use is a real trial. Conversely, a lot of little kids in our league simply catch and raise legends since they are easy to make tough. So yea, it really is E for everyone.

@Augustice9

Some are on the black and white official site that I posted the link for. But not all are confimed yet.

Unless you're British (or apparently Guatemalan), the word "friend" is about stigmatizing and degrading a group of people

It depends on how you use the word. I've seen people say things like "that looks really gay" and it wasnt intended as an offensive remark towards gays. Or even using the word "bit**" but not stigmatising female dogs.

adults should simply know better.

In an ideal world maybe.

This screwed-up world we live in right now is run by a lot of people who simply should know better, but don't. And the next generation of children are going to become like them. Possibly worse.

If I ran PUSA, the website would have the IPA pronunciation beside each newly revealed name. It'd be a wonderful way to teach phonetics to kids too!

well, i guess no one wants to help me figure this out. well, i'm tired.

so, i am sleeping. i will see you all tommorow. and i'll figure this out too.

That's awesome! I got back into it much more intensely when I met my partner, who's really a lot more active a player than I am. We actually met because of Pokemon puns, although to this day I'm insistent that it was _not_ a pickup line. We're both 25, too, so I definitely agree about the "E for Everyone" sentiment. I guess it would be cool if we ran a league or something, since that would let us volunteer _and_ let us help introduce younger players to the game, but I'm not sure we have time considering we're both grad students (although reading half of "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" didn't apparently stop me from commenting on here today).

I bring up SMT mostly because folks on various gaming blogs often suggest that Nintendo should make a "darker" or "more adult" Pokemon--though I'm never quite sure what this means--to which I usually respond, "Well, the closest thing is probably SMT."

And I still don't know how one is supposed to pronounce "Kyogre." I tend to guess based on the katakana, but "Arceus" kinda throws that out the window...

@Augustice9

Uh.. I posted a source link twice that you ignored... I was trying to help.

I found time. I'm a grad student trying to get my M.S. in paleo. I defend my thesis in May. I've been running a league since I started my Bachelors. I started one in the town my undergrad university is in, then moved for my Master's and started another one here. Both of my leagues meet up when we travel to VGCs. Team KO ftw as evidenced by my sig. Lol.

Also, Kyogre is pronounced Ky-ogre according to the show and Pokémon Battle Revolution. I tend to go with that.

Eh. Fair enough. (I don't know how to approximate a shrug of agreement smiley, so I'll simply indicate that one would be here.)

ZOMG Yes. Easily the most proactive suggestion I've read for the Pokemon franchise, haha.

Yeah thats pretty much the whole outgrowing syndrome... "I'm all grown up now! Why isn't pokemon growing up together with me!?"

I'm not saying that a darker more serious pokemon would be bad to me... heck something along the atmosphere of Fullmetal Alchemist alone would get me back on watching the pokemon anime on a regular basis.

...but the truth is that stuff aimed at a target group tends to stay that way. Messing with stuff that was aimed at kids initially... can usually be less than pleasant (see: Michael Bay's handiwork with transformers, shayamalan's with Avatar the last airbender, etc).

So yeah... I'd like a more serious approach to pokemon, but I don't think it'd be suitable. I say this because I don't judge the franchise based around the entirety of my personal wants and likes.

Besides, let's face it. If something kiddish gets revamped into a more mature form... people would take it as a hilarious joke most of the time :D
