9.0 Earthquake Strikes Japan

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

6 million houses without power or 10% of the population.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

And as if Japan didn't have enough on its plate already...

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

Hey at least it's nowhere near as bad as that Volcanic Eruption that took place last year with that Volcano in Iceland that temporarily paralyzed European Airports with clouds of ash and smoke.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

EDIT: Wow, I wrote that badly...

My friend (from another site) and I have the same opinion about the people who are saying it's going to be another Chernobyl.

Luc the Whiny Wind Boy said:
You know, I hate it when people say its gonna be another Chernobyl in the news/at school/whatever. First off, there's a next to nil chance there will be a nuclear explosion, because usually the fuel rods consist of about 35% enriched Uranium[sup] 238[/sup] instead of the about 95-98% that's used in bombs. So no. It's not going to blow up.

What they're worried about is radioactive material being released. I think even if material is released, that it will be not as bad as Chernobyl though, because the release will be most likely slower and smaller.
I wouldn't be surprised if they get a good amount of the cleanup done within the next 6 months, so I think you should be able to reschedule it for a few months later. Also, west Japan is pretty much a-okay (well, maybe not Kyushu thanks to that Volcano)

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

I live in Kyushu. I didn't even know a volcano exploded actually until I reported in for work. It is in a small area in the southern part of Kyushu. Kyushu is safe for travel. Mostly everywhere in Japan is safe for travel save for the Tohoku region. Hokkaido is safe as well. Between Shizuoka Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Tokyo, and its Northern prefectures *Gunma, Saitama, etc) are all experiencing scheduled blackouts and train schedule changes. So traveling to Tokyo should be a bit limited. But anything west of Mt. Fuji is in working order.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

Glad to know you're alright LostVoice, how come nobody in Japan is helping to fix the Nuclear Reactors? It's just one explosion after another instead of somebody actually fixing them. Heck, this is ten times worse than FEMA's Response to Hurricane Katrina when it hit Lousiana back in 2008 in the United States. You'd think there'd be people out there fixing this stuff to have a better response to this sort of thing.

As much as I hate to say this, the Earthquake/Tsunami Disaster the struck Japan last Friday is most likely going to cause an Economic Collapse in the country. The price of Japanese Cars imported to the U.S. like Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota are expected to increase, smartphone prices are going to increase, as well as iPhones and anything Apple makes due to the Chip Technology in Japan.

I found this information about this crisis on Wikipedia according to what has happened so far: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Japan_Earthquake

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

UPDATE:The estimate has increased from 8.8 to a level 9 category earthquake. This makes it one of the strongest on record, easily bumping it from 7th.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

The problem is the radiation leakage. I know several workers have been diagnosed with radiation poisoning plus more are being injured due to subsequent explosions. Plus, they have a time limit where mistakes can be made. So its not a matter of fixing them; its more so a matter of being able to fix them. I am as knowledgeable in nuclear energy as I am in the TCG (which I haven't touched in 13 years) but I imagine it isn't a simple task. I know the government, particularity PM Naota Kan, is taking heat for how badly this is progressing. I attribute the delay to the dangerous nature of this situation and miss communication between offices.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

Not sure if anyone has said this but -
The overall power and energy released from the quake moved Japan's shoreline by 8 feet. Adding on to this it also shifted the Earths axis by a good 6.5 inches.
I can excpect to see some unnatural weather phenomena in the future.

Plus a believe that a nuclear reactor has already declared meltdown because a rod started melting, releasing sezium into the atmosphere. (I think it was sezium) 10 people were testing within the 140,000 km radius and were proved positive for radiation poisoning.
This isn't a bad problem for everyone, it's slightly exaggerated. What about all them nukes that they are testing in the pacific ocean. I doubt that one reactor (maybe more) will prove problems for everyone in the world, but I still can't speak for the public of Japan.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

They actually raised it to a Magnitude 9 earthquake.

God bless those in Japan... you have the world willing to back you up. I hope you'll recover quickly.

Speaking of helping other countries, how's Libya doing?...

This kind of made people of America think well is Nuclear Energy a bad idea as an energy source yet we get people on FOX News and other news stations saying whether If it's safe or we could handle it more responsibly better than in Japan. Japan could go with better energy sources though I wouldn't recommend cow farts like Glenn Beck suggested. >_>

Stuff like Wind Farms and Solar Energy which is more environmentally safe compared to Natural Gas, Fossil Fuels, and Coal when I think the obvious answer is Electricity or Battery Powered Operated Energy. That's the kind of technology that America is extremely behind especially countries around the world on which would greatly cut off our dependence on foreign oil, oil reserves, but at the same time finding a way to put the U.S. Dollar on Electricity like we do in the U.S. for Gas at the Pump so that would cause a reboot in Economic Boom, of course price for charging your car needs to be cheap and affordable.

LostVoice and Japan take some advice from America, don't go with the kind of energy source we use being Oil/Gas as we are paying the price for it for our dependence of it over in Saudi Arabia especially with gas prices already climbing to the $3 to $4 range. It makes travel alot harder, true other countries around the world have higher gas especially in Europe where it's like $10 a gallon or more? Dear God, it baffles me how they adjust to everyday life in those conditions.

Putting Nuclear Plants in America near the San Andreas Fault right by California, New Mexico, and Arizona where they are close to the Ring of Fire which connects the North American Plate with the Pacific Plate that connects Japan, that is tempting fate as well. Japan has already tempted fate with the Nuclear Power Plants especially several that's close to the epicenter of a devastating 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake. Who knows when the next quake will hit America?

If anything unless the World Economy is fixed soon there could be a Global Economic Bond Market Meltdown on the horizon If we don't get our acts together to fix these problems soon. Part of the problem is relying on the wrong people to trust in terms of investing in certain stocks that could hurt the economy, don't trust Fannie & Freddie or Lehman Brothers since they put America on it's knees in the first place. I'd say trust people like Warren Buffet or Al Greenspan, maybe Ben Bernanke though I don't think the Chairman of the Fed is a good choice unfortunately.

RE: 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

I really do feel for the people of Japan.

Not only do I fear the current disasters that are happening in Japan, but I also fear what will happen after the bodies are retrieved and the natural disasters stop. The recovery process is going to be hard.

I feel bad for them, but it was somewhat stupid to have a nuclear power plant in an area that is known to be prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. It's a very safe form of power, as long as you don't build it in a dumb location.

Excellent site for those interested in Japan's current nuclear situation.

This picture was taken this morning by an aircraft carrier about 50 miles off the coast of Japan.

Japan wasn't in good shape to begin with, multiple natural disasters and a constant nuclear threat is well beyond the last thing they need right now… My most heartfelt and humble condolences go out to the good people of Japan, may the darkest of nights never prevail so long as the Rising Sun shines in the sky. In fact, a good friend of my mom's from work is Japanese, and her parents and close family live in northern Honshu – so far she's been panicking almost hysterically because she hasn't been able to get through to them via digital/phone communications, I sincerely wish them the best of health and safety as well, between the constant paranoia of possible aftershocks and meltdowns, I'm sure it's scary beyond any stretch of the imagination…

The way I see this, its the beginning of the 2012 theory. Some think it will start on December 21, 2012, but it will end on 2012. The tectonic plates are screwing up them selves and will kill us all. Volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis may be the source of 2012. Of course, this is just an idea and may be completely wrong.

I do feel really bad about the Japanese, and now I will probably never use the Pokémon moves Earthquake, or Magnitude for quite a while. I hope they get back up, and I'm sue they will.

Also, an earthquake, though not nearly as bad, only 4.3, occured down in Ottawa and Quebec, right where I live.

The only reason why this disaster was worse than it already was is due to Japan putting Nuclear Power Plant's on an Island (being Japan) close by a set of tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean (being the Ring of Fire's location) which is most prone to Earthquakes and even Tsunami's.

If anything America needs to shutdown their Nuclear Power Plants in the West Coast of California where it's the most prone for a catastrophic earthquake. Oregon and Washington are threats as well since they also connect to the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Had Japan used a different energy source instead of Nuclear Power Plants this disaster would've of been less awful and it would've eased the economic tensions it's already releasing right now. Human Error was to blame for this one and the Earthquake and Tsunami made that mistake worse than the 2 disasters combined causing a Cascade effect of events unfolding.

Even though I probably shouldn't bring this up and don't get the wrong idea that I'm being a jerk to everyone in Japan by saying this cause I'm not. There's another topic regarding this disaster that has concerned me as great as the people who are suffering in Japan right now and my heart and condolence's are with them 100%, it's the threat that this disaster could of ended the Otaku Culture, Anime/Manga Industry, and other forms of media in Japan as we know it.

The reason being that it's a matter of being a population issue after the events of this tragedy unfold and considering that the World Population is around 7 Billion that kinda puts a hamper on things I guess. The rumor is that some other country might do a big push to draw the industry over to another country to live on. It would stop anime and manga production in Japan because fewer kids in the country itself would result in a decline of the demographics that the industry targets. If there isn't a new generation to pass the torch, then the industry will either fall or move to another location.

In some time the love of anime and fandom with the more freedoms of the United States is greater than Japan that the industry packs up and moves. Hollywood embraces the Anime/Manga Industry by redoing past movies in anime format. Just give the people behind the Ghost in the Shell franchise the script of The Bourne Identity then tell them to animate it. Japan is so busy these days that they don't want to be tied to kids and they seem to be having birthrate problems as well. If some expertise from LostVoice can fill me in on this that would be great.

Now look, I understand full well that this situation is much bigger than video games and anime or even their culture for that matter. The problem is that alot of times we take things for granted too much to the point where we forget that in the event of a crisis we need to understand just how grateful we are especially with a country like Japan for what they've done for us and it is time for us to give back to them. To help them get back on their feet and recover.

Cause without them we wouldn't have you know, Anime/Manga, Video Games, and their Pop Culture imbedded in American Society but that's still not a reason why we should help them, they are our friends and allies regardless of that. And thinking that this was retribution for what happened 70 years ago in Pearl Harbor is unjust and the most cruel thing to say in this terrible tragedy.

I really am grateful to them for what they've done in terms of Anime/Manga, Pop Culture, Video Games, and Music. I would've wanted to donate money for them through the Red Cross or Salvation Army but my parents wouldn't let me not because I was being heartless but the thought counts especially in this time of crisis, you can only do what you can especially in these tough economic times.

This is very sad, I hope the japanese are okay. And, there aren't more natural disasters, but they get broadcasted more with the internet and TV.
