Writing Athena Plays Fire Emblem: Binding Blade - Next Playthrough Starting Soon!

Another busy day for me means no chapter for you guys. Sorry. I've instead spent my day on CP4 stuff and getting a WW game setup for another forum. Provided nothing crazy pops up, C23 should be played and posted tomorrow.

Chapter 23: ITC: Green kills everything

With King Robin's death, Bern formally surrenders to Etruria. The great war is finally over... but Green's mission isn't. Determined to find the truth behind the Demon Dragon, he and the Etrurian Army begin the hunt for Robin's Dark Priestess by following the light from Eckesachs to the Dragon Sanctuary...

Meanwhile, at the Dragon Sanctuary...

<Brunnya> Mr. Dragon Boss Sir, I've brought Idoun here for you. I will leave her in your care.
<DragonBoss> Coo'. What are you going to go, Human Chick?
<Brunnya> Well... King Robin is dead, and the Etrurian Army is on its way here. I will stand to fight them.
<DragonBoss> Geez, that's rough. You got enough troops for that?
<Brunnya> Ive sent out a call and maybe of the Wyvern Rider's loyal to Robin and his cause have returned to me. Realistically, our chance of victory is slim at best, but we will fight to the last man. If nothing else, we will show Bern's unbreakable will.
<DragonBoss> You guys are really willing to die just for the sake of sending a message? Hah. Humans are so weird.

As Lord Green and his forces approach the sanctuary, they are surprised to see a large number of Bern troops waiting there to repel them.

<Green> Maaan, I thought Bern surrendered.
<Elphin> Formally, yes, but it's really not surprising that their troops would be willing to remain fighting for the King and leader.
<Green> And so Robin still plagues us even from the grave. *sigh* I really don't want to fight these guys, I just want to take care of that dragon lady and get home. DNA, send a messenger to the Bern troops and tell them that I will accept their surrender and let them go home free to their families if they leave the battlefield.
<DNA> Yessir! *departs*
<Mora> That's noble of you, but I doubt any of them will accept the offer. Bern sees itself as the strongest force in Elibe. To surrender... their pride would not allow it.
<DNA> Sure enough, the offer was declined. Looks like we're going into battle after all.

In order to reach the Dragon Sanctuary, we'd have to follow a narrow path in between steep mountains and a wide lake. On an island in the lake were a collection of ballistae ready to rain down on us. As Green started the progression along the path, he sent Skyleaf out across the lake to take them out. She managed to kill 2 out of 3 before a Druid with a Sleep staff knocked her out and Celever was forced to Rescue her back to the group.

Armed with the Binding Blade, Green himself ended up rushing forward. The defensive bonuses made the status staves unlikely to hit him and he was able to handle enemies on his own with ease. Celever and Palutena healed him from afar while the others stayed out of range. While waiting, we happened to pick uup our final recruit, a Swordmaster named Karel. Eventually the status staves ran out and the rest of teh army was able to proceed, but by then Green had managed to take out most of the remaining enemies on his own. Brave and Vom helped him clean up and then Green killed the leader, Brunnya, and grabbed control of the fort.

<Green> Welp, here it is. Think that Dark Priestess really is inside?
<Elphin> Almost definitely, but I warn you to be cautious.
<Green> Why? Is there something I need to know?
<Palutena> According to the legends, the Dragon Sanctuary boosts the power of the dragons. Any we see inside here are going to be hella powerful.
<Green> I guess it's a good thing we picked up all those legendary weapons, then. Let's go, everyone!

Player Notes

Woooo, anti-penultimate chapter!

Kind of an interesting chapter setup. The majority of the enemies are Wyvern Riders/Lords, with a few Snipers (mostly for ballistae), Druids (mostly for status staves), and Manaketes dotting the board. You can go either east or west around the lake, but we took the eastern path since there was a village there. And since we're also protecting a good amount of weak units (DNA, Merlinus, and Fir, whom we had to bring to recruit Karel), we took one path instead of splitting up.

Green really is our MVP. Not only have I had really blessed level-ups with him, but this hack made the Binding Blade an unlimited weapon (it regularly only has 20 uses). That might not seem like a big deal, but it has 15 mt, 10 crit, attacks at 1-2, has effective damage against manaketes, and confers a passive +5 Def/Res bonus to Green whenever he has it equipped. Definitely OP.

So, yeah, I basically sent Green ahead and had him kill ~90% of the enemies. Hence the 6 level gain.

After the weekend break, we'll be back with the penultimate level and then finish everything up on Tuesday. I hope you're looking forward to the exciting climax!

Chapter 24: Dragon Story Time!

With Brunnya down and the last of Bern's soldiers driven away, it was time to enter the Dragon Sanctuary and bring an end to the madness. We walked down a flight of stairs into a large cavern that was black as night. A single tiled pathway led forward into a path through several small rooms, all of which were hidden from us beneath a roof. None of us knew what awaited us inside... but it's probably dragons.

<Green> Smells weird in here... a nice combination between... fire and wet dog smell.
<DragonBoss> So, you're the human boy who would stand against us, eh?
<Green> Wha? Who are you?
<DragonBoss> I'm the DragonBoss, obvs.
<Green> *rolls eyes* Don't you have a name?
<Jahn> Fine, you can call me Jahn. It's easier to type anyway, and Athena will be typing it a lot because you and I are going to be having a pretty long discussion during this chapter. To start off with, did you know that I'm the last true Dragon within this Sanctuary?
<Green> "True" dragon? You mean the other ones were fake? o_o;
<Jahn> Well, sort of. Those dragons are just "war dragons", artificially created beings that know nothing but battle. I, on the other hand, am a full-blooded, real dragon. I even fought against humans during the Scouring, you know.
<Everyone> :O!
<Jahn> And then the Demon Dragon, well, she's something else entirely different, too.
<Green> Isn't the Demon Dragon just, you know, your leader?
<Jahn> Hah, you really think that? Lolno. The Demon Dragon is just a tool. I wouldn't trust her to lead anymore than I would trust a hammer to design a house.
<Green> Wait, what? o_o;
<Jahn> Look, I'm not just going to give out a bunch of exposition at the beginning of the chapter. Start doing some fighting, and I'll start telling you a story. If you manage to make it all the way to kill me, you'll get to hear the whole thing, deal? *disappears*
<Green> Well, we were planning on killing you all anyway, so might as well get a story out of the deal. Everyone, prepare for battle!

We quickly moved forward into the first room where 3 dragons, Jahn's "war dragons" were waiting for us, 1 seated on a throne. Vom and Brave each killed one of the dragons on either side while Green killed the throne dragon and seized the throne for another story tidbit.

<Green> So, more story plz? :3
<Jahn> Hey, you humans are doing pretty good so far, congratulations.
<Green> We've fought a lot during this bloody war. 3 guys? That's nothing.
<Jahn> Well, you've earned the next story part, so here goes. Like I said before, the Demon Dragon is a tool. She was specifically created to help us.
<Green> She was created? But I thought it was the Demon Dragon that was doing the creating...
<Jahn> Well, yeah, she does create these war dragons, but they're just soulless constructs, not real dragons. So, she's something like a machine that pumps out soldiers, formed from a Divine Dragon, the most powerful types of dragon.
<Green> So, let me get this straight. There was this Divine Dragon and it just agreed to be turned into a Demon Dragon to pop out little soulless war dragon babies?
<Jahn> Ahahahahaha, no. Did you really think a Divine Dragon would agree to such a thing? Would you? We had to kind of... destroy the Divine Dragon's soul and bend it to our will in order to turn it into a Demon Dragon. So, effectively it's just as mindless as the war dragons it now produces.
<Green> Wow, that's... cruel.
<Jahn> The survival of our entire species was at stake. We didn't have a choice. *shrugs*
<Green> But still...
<Jahn> Anyway, if you want to know more, head on up to the next throne. *disappears*
<Green> Fiiiiine~

Silver led the way towards the next room, killing the war dragon waiting for us at the door. Skyleaf went back a bit to guard our backs as a few other dragon reinforcements started sneaking up from behind us. Green rushed forward and took out the 2 dragons that rushed forward before Silver took down the one on the throne and Green was able to cap it once again.

<Green> Alright, we killed 5 more of your guys, more story please.
<Jahn> You're doing very well so far, this is true. The onslaught of your human soldiers against the smaller numbers of dragons is actually very reminiscent of the Scouring itself.
<Green> o_o?
<Jahn> During the Scouring, it was numbers that won the war for humans more so than anything else. No matter how hard we fought you just kept popping out more babies and turning them into soldiers. That's why we needed a Demon Dragon to make our own war dragons, you see? We wouldn't stand a chance otherwise. The Divine Dragons didn't want any part of it, though.
<Green> Why not?
<Jahn> They said it was "an affront to the laws of nature". Bah. They wouldn't even listen to our arguments for the idea afterward, they just turned and fled like cowards. In fact, we don't even know where they went, but we did manage to capture one of their kind before they disappeared.
<Green> And that was the one you turned into your Demon Dragon machine.
<Jahn> Yep! Her name was Idoun. She was reluctant to leave with the other Divine Dragons because she was afraid their departure would cause a rift in the species. Of course, it was that very hesitation that allowed us to kidnap her and bend her to our will. She didn't want to go along with our plans, but that didn't matter to us. We just destroyed her soul, and in doing so, made her willing to follow our every command.
<Green> That's... just awful. ._.;
<Jahn> I suppose you'd think so, yes. Still want to keep hearing more? Feel free to head on to the next room. *disappears*

We rushed forward through the narrow path towards the next room. I led the vanguard this time, taking a solid hit bit killing one of the war dragons in a single blow. Palutena healed me up and then I rushed into the room with SM and Green, each of us killing one of the other dragons inside. While the others caught back up, Green capped the throne to continue the tale.

<Jahn> You're making very good progress indeed. What would you like to hear about next?
<Green> So, you managed to capture Idoun and turn her into this Demon Dragon to pop out all the little war dragons. With that kind of power by your side... how did you manage to lose to the war to the humans?
<Jahn> Geez, what a nice way to rub salt into a wound, am I right? Yeah, sure the plan worked really well. We popped out tonnes of war dragons and things really did seem to be turning to our favour... until the humans found out about the Demon Dragon anyway. They stopped focusing on killing our rank and file soldiers and instead began developing super powerful weapons that were extra capable of piercing through dragon hide.
<Green> And those are the legendary weapons, the ones we're wielding now.
<Jahn> Correct. Your ancestors armed their strongest soldiers with those weapons and stormed our sanctuary, just like your army did here today...
<Green> *mumbles* (well, except the bow and light tome anyway >_>)
<Jahn> ... but something unexpected happened. The power of those weapons clashing against the power of the dragons here in these halls... it caused the laws of nature to twist and collapse. Snow began to fall in the summertime, stars were shining at noon.
<Green> The Ending Winter... that's what caused it? I was always told that it was the dragon's power that caused it, and that the legendary weapons were used to restore the balance of nature....
<Jahn> Bwahahahahahaha, that's what they really taught you? Oh, who am I kidding, of course it is. The bad scary dragons caused everything bad in the world and the humans only ever did good things. How typical.
<Green> So if it was the power of the dragons and the power of the legendary weapons combined that caused the Ending Winter... that must be why there were so many traps and everything around them. They were sealed away to try and prevent that from happening again.
<Jahn> So, the humans really did seal the legendary weapons away? That was rather smart of them. Less smart for you to have brought them all inside here now.
<Green> ... ... ... >_______>;;
<Jahn> Bah, don't worry. The power of those weapons is definitely much less than it used to be. I doubt you'll be causing any natural disasters anytime soon.
<Green> *phew*
<Jahn> Anyway, that "Ending Winter" as you called it... well, that's why we ended up losing the war. But you'll have to make it to the next room before I tell you more. *disappears*

Once again, the majority of our force continued onward while Skyleaf watched our backs to protect us from the reiforcements. As soon as we made it to the next room, Vom, Brave, and I took out the war dragons while Keeper danced Green to rush to the next throne right away.

<Jahn> Wow, that was fast.
<Green> Well, yeah, we want more story, spill.
<Jahn> Impatient youth... *shakes head* Anyway, dragons were the ones who really suffered the most when that whole nature warping BS happened. With that crazy power running rampant, we couldn't maintain our dragon forms, so we had to transform into humans and seal our power away inside these stones.
<Green> So that's where those Dragonstones come from...
<Jahn> Yup. And when we were stuck as humans, we were effectively worthless, even more feeble than a regular human.
<Green> Couldn't you transform into something more powerful than a human?
<Jahn> Man, that would have been cool, we could have turned into tigers or ravens or some shit... Sadly, human shape was really the only one available to us because it required so little energy. Of course, they were also hella frail. You humans were able to slaughter us left and right. I wasn't killed, but I did suffer grievous wounds.
<Green> I guess you probably hate humans now, huh?
<Jahn> Hate? Oh, not at all. Only humans feel emotions like hatred; we don't even understand the word. We fought, and we lost, and we paid the price. Though, we still have a chance to survive and overcome you, thanks to King Robin resurrecting the Demon Dragon.
<Green> So, Robin really did undo the Demon Dragon's seal...
<Jahn> Yep! And that's all for now, so keep going if you want to hear more. *disappears*
<Green> Geez, how many rooms are there in this stupid sanctuary. >_<

We rushed down the next corridor to the next room, Green leading the way. 2 of the dragons in the next room rushed him, and then Brave moved forward to kill the last one protecting the throne so we could all rush forward and hear more story.

<Jahn> Huh, you guys really are doing good. I suppose I should have expected this from the army that was able to take out Robin.
<Green> Speaking of Robin, how did he know about the Demon Dragon anyway?
<Jahn> Okay, so, ou know that Hartmut of the Eight Legends was the one who spared the Demon Dragon, yes? And then he went on to found Bern?
<Green> Yeah, obvs.
<Jahn> Alright, so, here's the full story. The Eight Legends are trampling majestically through the Sanctuary, slaughtering dragons left and right, finally making it to our leader, killing him too. They burst into this final room, ready and eager to do battle with the great Demon Dragon and find nothing but a blank-eyed, human-looking girl.
<Green> That was Idoun? She didn't fight them or anything?
<Jahn> How could she fight? She had no soul, no will. The leader was dead, so there was no one to give her any orders. She just stood there, staring at them dumbly. They honestly weren't quite sure what to do. This wasn't quite the boss battle they expected.
<Green> Yeah, I can imagine. >_>
<Jahn> Still, they knew they had to destroy the Demon Dragon, so they raised their weapons and moved in. Eventually Idoun did move to protect herself, moving in the same thoughtless battle mode common to the war dragons she created.
<Green> So there was a battle after all...
<Jahn> Of sorts. Hartmut, as the leader, he wielded the most powerful of all the legendary weapons.
<Green> The Binding Blade?
<Jahn> Yes, that's the one. When he struck with that blade and hit Idoun's flesh, she collapsed unconscious.
<Green> Wait, what? It didn't kill her?
<Jahn> Nope. That sword had the power to detect the will of the person wielding it. Or something. Anyway, apparently Hartmut had heard the story about how the Demon Dragon was created and he felt sorry for her.
<Green> Because he pitied Idoun, the blade read his will and didn't kill her...
<Jahn> Something like that. Boy, humans sure are weird. Seriously, I would never hesitate to destroy a threat like that.
<Green> So what happened next?
<Jahn> Hartmut convinced the other Legends to agree with him to spare Idoun's life. They eventually agreed and he hid her in a shrine in the forests of Bern, sealing her away with the power of the sword and also a special gemstone, that item you now know as the Fire Emblem. Afterward, he founded a country around the area where the shrine was located in order to add an extra layer of protection. And, so, ever since then, Idoun and the shrine have been protected by the Bern royal family.
<Green> Until Robin unsealed her, anyway.
<Jahn> Well, yeah, obvs.
<Green> So, how do you know this story, anyway?
<Jahn> Like I said, I was injured pretty badly in the final battle in the Sanctuary, so I hid myself away for a long time to heal. All of the later stuff I learned from Robin. He studied Bern's history pretty extensively.
<Green> And how did you meet him?
<Jahn> Hmmm... I think that's enough storytime for now. Keep moving forward if you want to ask me more questions. *disappears*
<Green> Damnit, so close....

Green led the way into the next room once again, taking out the first war dragon while SM, Silver, and I took care of the remainders. Skyleaf and Vom were still working on protecting Keeper and working their way back from handling reinforcements when Green plopped down into the throne, eager to hear the rest of the story.

<Jahn> I must admit, you've progressed far and exceeded my expectations. I myself am waiting for you in the next chamber. Well done. It's been quite some time since I've shown a human my true form. After all; I've not left this Sanctuary since the Scouring.
<Green> Whoa, really? You've been in here that long?
<Jahn> Yep. Where else could I go? I sat here for a thousand years and waited. Waited for my body to heal, waited for the resurrection of the Demon Dragon, waited for our chance for victory. At long last, the time came. The seal was broken, and power rushed through my veins.
<Green> What did Idoun's seal have to do with your own power? o_o;
<Jahn> You see, the power of the Demon Dragon and the power of this Sanctuary are linked. While Idoun slept, so did the Sanctuary, and my own powers waned, but as soon as she was awoken, power returned here and I was able to fully heal myself thanks to the rush of power. Once my body was whole again, I went out to find the person who had undone the seal.
<Green> And that was Robin,
<Jahn> Yep. Of course, I had to hide my true form until I knew his intentions, but I managed to find him and I asked him why he broke the seal. He asked me who I was, and when I told him I was a dragon... this huge, creepy smile erupted on his face. He told me he wanted to give the world back to the dragons, and although I didn't fully trust him, I did respect him as the leader of the Demon Dragon. And so he commanded Idoun to "liberate the world" and rule in place of humanity.
<Green> But, Robin's dead now, so... what is she doing? >_>
<Jahn> She's waiting for her chance to liberate the world of course.
<Green> ?!
<Jahn> What, surely that's no surprise to you. After all, that's what Robin commanded, he wanted the plan to go forward even after his death should he die in battle against you. And so the command lives on.
<Green> So, what, now she's just a slave, beholden to the orders of a dead man?
<Jahn> What, are you turning into Hartmut now? Do you pity the poor Demon Dragon? Hahahahaha, humans are such fools. Let me give you a word of advice, little lordling: humans and dragons will never be able to live in peace. There are simply too many differences between us.
<Green> But that's not true! There's a hidden city where dragons and humans live together in harmony.
<Jahn> Oh, please, like you expect me to believe such an obvious lie. *rolls eye*
<Green> But it's not a lie, I've been there! It's actually pretty nice, if a bit sandy...
<Jahn> No more foolishness. Your final test is at hand. Come, defeat me in battle, if you can! *disappears*
<Green> Oh, I will alright...

This time it was Brave who led the charge into the final room, tackling the leading war dragon and withstanding the attacks of two more as the rest of us worked out way towards the chamber. Silver same forward and, perhaps angered by the insistence that her hometown was a lie, destroyed Jahn in a single round. The battle was over, and only the Demon Dragon, Idoun, lied ahead.

<SM> Green....
<Green> Yes, SM? Is something wrong? You look sad.
<SM> When I get older... will I turn into a bad dragon, too? :< If dragons and humans can't live together...
<Silver> But he was wrong. You know that. We've lived in Arcadia for years and gotten along just fine.
<SM> But... but I'm a Divine Dragon... just like the Demon Dragon...
<Green> Don't worry, SM, no one is going to turn you into a Demon Dragon, I promise. No matter what happens, you will always be SM, and humans are your friends.
<SM> For reals?
<Green> For reals. And we're going to help the Demon Dragon, too.
<SM> :O?
<Green> It's not her fault that she's doing bad things. Weren't you listening to the story?
<SM> I didn't understand it, too many big words. :\
<Green> Well, you'll understand when you're older. *patpat*

Player Notes

Nice long chapter, hurray! :U This chapter is actually super simple and fast so the great majority of it really was narration, which of course takes extra long because I have to read it AND re-write it. But now we get the full story of the Scouring and what happened with the dragons and Idoun and it really is pretty fascinating from a lore perspective. Elibe might not be as crazy fleshed out as some of the other FE worlds, but it's got some good fun stuff hidden in that backstory if you look deep enough.

Every enemy in this level is a dragon, and we have these nice, shiny, fancy legendary weapons that are extra effective against dragons, which made this level kind of a cakewalk, especially combined with our extra long movement. Silver (with Apocalypse), Athena (with Forblaze), SM (with her Divine Stone), and Brave (with Armads) could cleanly kill all non-boss enemies with a single hit, and even most of the mini-bosses with throne protection. Vom (with Durandal), Green (with the Binding Blade), and Skyleaf (with Maltet), could all one-round, and sometime one-hit (depending on enemy def, or in Vom's case, if he gets a crit). Each room had ~3-4 dragons, and then occasional ones would spawn from behind as reinforcements.

Aside from that, Celever and Palutena don't have legendary weapons (though Celever does have a legendary staff that he hasn't even had to use yet), so they primarily stayed on healing duty with Physics, while Keeper did her thing and danced everyone to keep us moving.

If you noticed some names missing from the previous few paragraphs, well, there's an unfortunate reason behind it. Deploy slots for the last couple levels are low (10 total, with Green and SM being mandatory fills for 2 of those slots), and so I had to make some tough choices about who to bring. There's not even a pre-screen for the last chapter, so I can't even give you a full unit recap sadly, but here's how our final team stands and why they were chosen:

Final Team Recap!

Lord Green -

UN5VoFi.png

Wow, isn't Green looking better than before! Roy may be generally believe to be the overall worst lord in FE, but our Green really turned out amazing. He got some incredible level-ups, and the unlimited nature of the Sword of Seals let me easily catch back up and become a powerhouse. He could probably have soloed these last few chapters on his own. Wields the Blazing Sword, obvs.

Vom -

g4PsAwe.png

Vom is our Durandal wielder and he really gets good use out of the Str boost as you can see from his low Str. Unlike most of our units, he never actually capped anything, but he's still incredibly useful with his super high crit rate. Probably the least useful of our legendary weapon wielders, but still worthy of his spot.

Celever -

UwUqA4b.png

Celever never even made it to A Light so he had no hope of wielding Aureola, but he gets in with a technicality for being our Saint Staff wielder. It's a legendary staff that restores all HP to all allies, which is really nice in a pinch, though thankfully we haven't had to use it. He's basically a staffbot, but a good one.

Athena -

QEAkENW.png

Athena's turned into quite the powerhouse with her maxed out Mag and Spd. Her Skl is still on the low side, but Forblaze has high accuracy so it hasn't been an issue. She was chosen over TGK as the wielder because her higher Mag and Spd made her better suited for it, and her easy one-shot kills on the dragons justified that choice easily.

Brave -

M4ykIhu.png

Brave is also doing amazing. No capped stats (aside from HP, anyway, which kind of feels like a cop out), but his caps are all pretty high anyway, and he's doing just find without it. He gets the crit boost like Vom, but unlike Vom, he doesn't actually need it to kill things, since he usually one-hits... so long as he hits. Armads gives him some extra tankiness. Overall, very pleased with his usefulness.

Skyleaf -

TGntZFI.png

Skyleaf narrowly beat our Icarus as our Maltet wielder with her capped Str/Skl/Spd. Icarus has a point of Str more, but his Skl is much lower which makes Skyleaf more consistent, and that's mostly why I ended up giving the lance to her instead. So far, she's proved her worth again and again, tanking amazingly and dealing out a good amount of damage, too.

Silver -

3ZjALvw.png

Silver is hilariously overpowered right now. Apocalypse gives her a +5 Mag on top of her already capped Mag, and it has a high might, too. Depending on Res, she was doing between 71-75 damage in a single hit to the regular dragons in this level. Jahn's high res brought her damage output down to 64, but she still cleanly one-rounded him. It's just funny as hell. Oh, and yes, she did cap her Skl and Spd, too.

Palutena -

8prnoLe.png

Palutena was one of my later additions. Since Silver gets Apocalypse, she has no legendary tome to wield, but she does have an A in staves which gives her a lot of support utility. I ended up bringing her along to the final team solely for that ans an emergency extra healer. After all, without a legendary weapon, no one else will be doing much damage anyway, so why not go for something more support oriented instead of adding in chip damage?

Keeper -

T9oglDY.png

Keeper's stats are exactly the same as before. :U Like Palutena, she was chosen for utility. By dancing another unit, that effectively gives me another round of whatever I need, whether that's another legendary weapon wielder attacking, someone healing, or Green running around to thrones for storytime.

SM -

MlbhwMH.png

SM is definitely the biggest change from the last recap. She went from not a single experience point to being level capped. Stat-wise, she capped her Str, Spd, and Lck, and her Divinestone gives her crazy stats. She is... the murder chicken.

Tomorrow will be the final chapter. I hope you all are looking forward to it!

Nope. It was either him or Athena for Forblaze and she won the prize with her higher Mag/Spd.

Forblaze is still stupid strong though, as it can just carry a mage in to one-round games like nothing. Still, why take that chance and just give it to the strongest. Besides, when you have a mage that breaks the fourth-wall so much she deserves it!

More or less this. I could have easily just written myself in as a narrator even if I weren't participating, after all. I also remember having a much harder time of this level in particular in my previous playthrough, but I'm a lot more focused this time around (also I did a waffletonne of arena abuse for Boots funds for hilarity which I usually don't) and combined with the growth boosts of the patch, so I'm in a much better place than I was during my 1st playthrough.

Final Chapter: Everyone is friends

We rushed into the final room, Green leading the way. Sure enough, standing in front of us at the head of the room was Idoun herself, swaddled in a long, purple cloak.

<Green> So, you're the Demon Dragon, eh?
<Idoun> What's it to you?
<Green> I'm here to stop you!
<Idoun> Why? o.o;
<Green> Because you're going to destroy everything! Besides, the guy who ordered you to do stuff is dead now, so it's not like you need to listen to him anymore. We don't need to fight.
<Idoun> Yes, I have heard those words before, long ago. I have been asleep for a very long time, eons filled with empty dreams until he awoke me, His Majesty. I am no longer who I used to be, and I know what I must do. I will lead this world into the light. And if you insist on standing in my path... I will stop you. That, too, is part of my duty.
<Green> So, your will is set on this, huh.
<Idoun> My will is His Majesty's will. I only exist now to fulfill his desires.

At those words, Idoun threw back her cloak and transformed in a huge, dark, evil-looking dragon.

<Vom> So it begins.
<Palutena> Hahaha, wow, so this is the power of the Demon Dragon, the power I've been searching for.
<Celever> It's pretty fascinating, really.
<Silver> I can sense her sadness... ._.;
<SM> Do we really have to fight? :<
<Brave> I'm not afraid!
<Keeper> Good, I'll hide behind you. That thing is... huge.
<Skyleaf> For Princess Mora... and for Gale... I will fight.
<Athena> Father... please watch over us.
<Green> Alright, well, this is it. I've got the Binding Blade, so... everyone, please let me make the final strike.

Silver and Skyleaf rushed forward to weaken Idoun, and then Green stepped forward to deliver the final blow with the Bi--

<Green> Wait, wait, wait. Hold on a sec.
<Athena> What?
<Green> That's it? 3 attacks and poof, she's gone in one round?
<Athena> Well, actually, you could have taken Idoun out completely by yourself, but I thought it would be nice to spread the love around a bit, and Silver and Skyleaf were both in range, so...
<Green> I guess I just expected more from a final boss. :\
<Athena> Me too, but them's the breaks. Can I get back to narrating now?
<Green> Oh, sure, go right ahead.

And then Green stepped forward to deliver the final blow with the Binding Blade.

<Idoun> I... I am alone... in darkness... x.x;

As Idoun sank to the ground defeated, the floor and walls around us because to tremble and shake. With the power of the Demon Dragon gone, the Sanctuary was collapsing! Green ordered everyone to run out as fast as they could, though he stopped to pick up Idoun and carry her to safety before following them himself. Outside once again, we sat and watched the Sanctuary crumble in on itself and turn to dust, proud of a job well done.

And thus the war known as the "Disturbance of Bern" was finally resolved for good. With Bern's surrender, the current government was completely disbanded, but Etruria and Lord Green made sure that Princess Mora inherited the throne, establishing the New Kingdom of Bern. And on the day of her coronation...

<Green> Princess Mora, you have my congratulations.
<Brave> And my axe!
<Mora> Thanks. It'll be a tough road ahead from here, but I believe I am capable of forging forward.
<Green> I'm sorry about having to involve Etruria in all this.
<Mora> No, no, it's understandable. Still, there will always by those who think I turned against my brother and sided with Etruria only to gain the throne.
<Green> Yeah, that's... pretty crappy.
<Mora> It is what it is. I have no regrets. I will regain the people's trust in my own way. And to start off with, that means lots of rebuilding and setting things straight again.
<Green> If there's ever anything I can do to help, please let me know.
<Mora> You know I will. Will you be staying with the Etrurian Army?
<Green> Nope. It's about time for me to get back to Pherae, especially with my dad being sick and all.
<Mora> Pherae is blessed to have an heir like you.
<Soldier> Your highness, the ceremony is about to begin!
<Mora> Thank you, I'm on my way. Green, will you join me?
<Green> Huh? Me?
<Mora> Ever since I left Bern with the Fire Emblem, you have helped me tremendously. So I want you to see me crowned… I want you to see with your own eyes what path Bern will take under my leadership.
<Green> In that case, I'd be happy to! Let us go and witness a new age for Bern.

Meanwhile, in Arcadia...

<Elder> Ohhey, Green, 'sup?
<Green> I happened to be in the area so I thought I'd drop by. I already stopped and said hi to SM. She seems a lot happier these days.
<Elder> Yeah, we let her go outside more now. She really seems to enjoy it.
<Green> How's Idoun doing?
<Elder> Well, we've been able to piece her soul back together, but... she's not quite right. She still won't do anything without being told, for example.
<Green> *sigh* What a bummer. :\
<Elder> We knew, of course, that she had been kidnapped, but we were afraid of the consequences if we went out to rescue her, so we did nothing. Now I wonder how much could have been avoided if we had chosen differently.
<Green> It's not your fault.
<Elder> In any event, we will continue to do our best to restore her full heart. It's the least we can do. If only she would show some emotion...

Outside, in the outskirts of the Nabata Desert...

<SM> See, Idoun, this is a tree?
<Idoun> Tree.
<SM> And it has fruit!
<Idoun> Fruit?
<SM> Yes, up there at the top! And if you shake the tree like so... *bonk* Owww! It fell on my head... x.x;
<Idoun> Heh.
<SM> :O!
<Idoun> Was that a laugh?
<SM> Kind of a creepy one, but it's a start. Come on, let's go tell Green! *runs off*
<Idoun> A warm…breeze… *slowly follows*

THE END!

Final Team!

Lord Green
- Lv. 13 Great Lord
DNA - Lv. 6 Paladin
Jabber - Lv. 12 Paladin
TGK - Lv. 13 Sage
Vom - Lv. 11 Swordmaster
Celever - Lv. 18 Bishop
Athena - Lv. 17 Sage
Brave - Lv. 11 Berserker
Skyleaf - Lv. 15 Wyvern Lord
Silver - Lv. 14 Druid
Icarus - Lv. 11 Wyvern Lord
Palutena - Lv. 20 Druid

BB - Lv. 20 Thief
Keeper - Lv. 20 Dancer
SM - Lv. 20 Manakete

Character Endings:

Lord Green & Keeper - An Unexpected Alliance
Green returned home to Pherae to help rebuild after the war, and Keeper followed him, constantly dancing in his face and being obnoxious. Eventually, he gave into her charms and the two wed. The people of Pherae weren't exactly thrilled to have some mysterious commoner as the Marquess's wife, but eventually she won them over.

SM - Divine Dragon
After returning to Arcadia, SM was never officially seen by "outsider" humans again. Although her role in the war was recorded and talked about frequently by Green and Athena, many scholars and historians doubt that she even existed. However, she did sometimes conceal herself as a human and visit other cities for fun.

Celever - Amorous Priest
Celever was offered the position of Bishop of the St. Elimine Church to replace one of the traitors disposed during the war, but he turned it down, preferring to instead remain a simple traveling priest. After all, it's not like he'd meet any ladies sitting around in a stuffy cathedral all day.

Silver & Palutena - Druid Friends
Silver invited Palutena to join her in Arcadia after the war, and the old scholar couldn't pass the opportunity up. Silver was an invaluable aid in Palutena's research and the two became fast friends. When Palutena finally succumbed to the ravages of age, Silver was devastated, but carefully preserved all of her friends work for future generations.

Vom - Surly Swordmaster
Vom disappeared without a trace after the war. A swordsman-for-hire that matched his general description was seen periodically across Elibe looking for work, but whenever he was asked about his possible involvement in the war, he would disappear soon after.

Athena & Brave - A Solid Partnership
Not wanting to go back home, Brave followed Athena back to Ostia after the war was over. When she ascended to the position of Marquess, she appointed Brave as her head military advisor, and the two worked together to solidify their country's defenses against bandits and broke the initial ground to unite the members of the Lycian League into one Kingdom of Lycia.

Skyleaf & TGK - The Crimson Knight & Mage Duo
TGK decided to go with Skyleaf back to Bern where the two worked together with Princess Mora to help rebuild. They helped to form a sanctuary for children that were orphaned during the war and taught them to fight and use magic. Although Skyleaf still grieved for Gale, TGK helped her to overcome her grief, and the two grew very close over the years.

Jabber & DNA - Loyal Paladin Bros
When they returned home to Pherae, DNA formally retired and gave his position as leader of the Pherae Knights to Jabber. However, the two remained fast friends, and DNA was always happy to offer advice and encouragement to his partner as Lance worked to train a new generation of knights and offer advice and counsel to Lord Green.

Icarus - Ebony Lightning
Icarus returned to Bern to help Princess Mora rebuild. Due to their camaraderie during the war, Mora trusted Icarus implicitly, and he became her right-hand man and bodyguard. As time passed, they both grew to win the trust of their homeland once again, and Icarus was pointed as a military commander.

BB - Shadow of Ostia
After the war, BB disappeared with a trace. Although many legends and rumours abounded about his involvement in the war and his efforts to rebuild Ostia, his name is never actually mentioned anywhere, and Ostia formally denies employing any spies.

Final Thoughts:

And so ends Binding Blade. Admittedly, this game is one of my lesser-favourite Fire Emblem games, and this playthrough hasn't exactly changed my mind in that respect, but it was still a fun time playing through it again, and I hope you all had a good time reading along.

Specifically for this last level: Idoun is a pushover. Easily the easiest of all of the FE bosses and a pushover even in HM. I guess that kind of makes up for the fact that most of the rest of the game is difficult, but it's still something of a letdown.

This game's highlight is the gameplay. It's definitely the most difficult of the GBA era of games, and many of the maps and objectives (main and side) are interesting. Sure, seizing isn't exactly a unique map goal, and that's what every single chapter is, but side goals (such as being able to unlock gaidens, recruit all the characters, earn optional items, etc) really add a lot of depth to the game, and make it harder, too.

My biggest complaints about this game are mostly the plot and characters. The story itself is very generic and the plot kind of moves in fits and starts, lacking any kind of direction. By the time you actually move onto serious deeper aspects of things, it all rushes by super quickly. The characters themselves are kind of interesting... but there's almost no way to know it. Characters aside from Green, Mora, and SM hardly ever appear after they've arrived, there's little customized text, and supports are so long and painful to build that it's unlikely you'll get those extra conversations unless you specifically grind for them.

And speaking of supports, sorry there were so few. I remembered that FE6 supports were slow, but I underestimated how slow they really are, and a lot of the ones chosen were inconvenient as well. As a result, our chosen pairings got 0-2 convos. Hopefully the customized endings will help out with that a little bit.

In terms of our team, we were pretty well-rounded. There were some characters that were more useful in the beginning but fell off towards endgame (DNA, Jabber), and others that were a pain to start with but turned into powerhouses (Athena, Silver). We had a higher ratio of magic users than I'm used to, but it ended up working out pretty well.

If I were to assign an overall MVP it would probably be Skyleaf. She comes in at a decent enough level where she didn't need babying and was consistently useful, either for flying support or for damage.

I hope you all enjoyed reading along with me! I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

The Next Playthrough?

Sadly, this is going to be my last playthrough for a while, FE or otherwise. Although I really enjoy doing these, I've been swamped with other work lately and I don't really have the time to commit to doing another right now.

That said, I think you all can look forward to my next playthrough sometime this summer where I will be hosting another PMU of Fire Emblem Fates! Like my Awakening playthrough that started this whole series, readers will not only get to pick my characters, but they will be able to pair them up to make children, and also decide on reclassing, promotions, and many other choices that will be held throughout the game.

On top of that, you guys will also be able to choose which version of the game I do: Birthright or Conquest. Will we be siding with Nohr and the family that raised us? Or will we go to Hoshido to join up with our birth family?

However, it will still be a few months until it will be ready to begin. Not only will I want a chance to play through each of the paths on my own before I do a PMU (and the game isn't even released here yet >.<), but I do have a vacation planned and other obligations that will prevent me from hosting it right away.

I will post on my profile shortly before I'm ready to begin to start the initial poll of Birthright vs. Conquest before I start up the thread, so make sure to follow me (or at least check up on profile posts occasionally) if you want to be a part of that decision.

Quoi? Who is this "Zeiss" person? :p

Another fun to read playthrough Athena :) Even though my plan surprisingly failed, I really did enjoy the ending and decided to give you a thumbs up. But where's my character ending!?

Oh yeah right, I'm dead...

Quoi? Who is this "Zeiss" person? :p

You don't know him from the famous 3DS game? Kid Zeiss: Uprising

I can't believe the FE playthroughs are over already... Time sure flies when you have good time.

I can't wait for Fates! Although, It will be June until I play x_x'

Many thanks for having me and for the honour of naming the MC's name after mine! :D

Not over, just on hiatus. :) Hopefully in a few months they'll be back with Fates, and I'd like to do them for some of the other games, too, though I'm not sure if I trust you guys to pick my pairings for FE4... :p

As long as I'm paired with TGK I'll be happy. XD
Starting a tradition, yes we are.~

Well, that should be much easier in the Fates playthrough since that's more like Awakening in that most people can pair with each other instead of the super-limited supports available in the earlier games.
