Writing Athena Plays Fire Emblem: Binding Blade - Next Playthrough Starting Soon!

Chapter 1: This game doesn't want any of your silly prologue nonsense

Once upon a time, humans and dragons were friends and lived happily together and shared picnics and everything was pretty great. Then humans had to go be a bunch of jerks and they started a war against the dragons known as The Scouring. Even though dragons were super big and hella powerful, somehow humans ended up winning the war and kicked the dragons out to a different realm. About a thousand years or so, give or take a decade or two, has passed since then...

Without the dragons to hinder them, humans spread all around the continent of Elibe. The country of Etruria was founded in the west. They're kind of the France of the FE world and are known for their refined culture and high fashion. In the east is the country of Bern, pragmatic and with the largest military. Together, they are the most powerful nations, but there are some small losers scattered about, like Lycia. The Lycian League is actually a group of independently run territories each governed by a Marquess. Ilia to the far north is nothing but snow and mercenaries. Sacae is home to a bunch of nomads and generally minds its own business.

Everything was cool for a while, until King Robin of Bern decided to be a jerk and conquer all of Elibe. Bern's powerful military might effectively slaughtered the people of Sacae and Ilia as easy as squashing a gnat. Their next target is Lycia. They first targeted the border territory of Pherae, home of Lord Green, the noble born son of Marquess Eliwood of Pherae. Green happened to be chilling out in Ostia at the time, but his dad was very ill, so he called his son back home to help lead Pherae's soldiers in defense against Bern. On the other hand Athena, daughter of Marquess Hector of Ostia, just so happened to be visiting Eliwood in Pherae, so bad luck for her.

Green heads off towards his home armed with some soldiers to help protect him. He also brings with him Bors, a shitacular Ostian knight who wants to make sure Athena is safe. So begins our tale in Pherae...

<Merlinus> Lord Eliwood! Bandits are attacking! :<
<Eliwood> So I can see out the window. Damn and blast! If only it weren't for this stupid illness, I would go out there and slaughter them myself. I got up to 20/20 last game, you know.
<Athena> Lord Eliwood? What's going on?
<Eliwood> Go hide, Athena. Bandits are coming and there's a very good chance they'll break into the castle with our soldiers out defending against Bern.
<Athena> I can help fight too, you know!
<Eliwood> I'm sure you could, sweet thing, but your dad would have my head on a platter if anything happened to you, so I need to make sure to keep you out of harm's way. We just need to sit tight and wait for Green to come save the day. In fact... Merlinus, why don't you send a messenger out to him, make sure he's hurrying along.
<Merlinus> Sure, I'll send Jabber out.

I watched out the window as Jabber rode forward to the southwest where Green would hopefully show up soon. Suddenly, they arrived; not only Green himself, but a small collection of soldiers were with him, just enough for a nice opening chapter to start off the game.

<Green> Ohhey, Jabber. 'Sup?
<Jabber> Urgent news, milord! Bandits are attacking the castle! :<
<Green> Ohshi- is my dad okay? D:
<Bors> And Lady Athena?
<Jabber> Yes, they're both inside the castle, but please hurry!
<DNA> Jabber's right. We need to get rid of these bandits and get to the castle as soon as possible.
<Green> Alright. Let's go! :3

Green and his knights rushed forward into the waiting arms of the bandits. DNA took a side route to warn a local village while Green and Jabber took care of the brunt of the fighting, slowly pushing their way towards the castle. Jabber lured units forward and whittled down there HP for Green to finish off. Eventually they made it to the castle which was guarded by the bandit's leader. DNA took the first few hits to soften him up for Green to take down and then seize the point.

<Green> Dad! Athena! I'm so glad to see you're safe. <3
<Athena> We're very happy to see you, too.
<Green> How are you feeling, dad?
<Eliwood> Eh, you know. Anyway, I'll spare you the long form narration. You know what's going on right?
<Green> Yeah, yeah, Bern's invading everyone and you want me to lead Pherae's soldiers because you're sick.
<Eliwood> Sorry to interrupt your studies, but I figured, you know, survival was more important.
<Green> Oh, yeah, totes.
<Athena> Let me help, too! I have good magics. :3
<Eliwood> Sorry, Athena, you're not supposed to join until Chapter 8. You'll have to head back to Ostia for now.
<Athena> But but but... :<
<Eliwood> No butts. Since your dad is leading Ostia's army, you need to cover the throne for him while he's gone anyway.
<Athena> Fiiiine~ But I refuse to take Bors back with me because he sucks. Green can keep him.
<Green> Uh, thanks, I guess.
<Eliwood> Anybutts, Pherae doesn't exactly have a whole lot of soldiers, so I've hired some mercenaries to help you out. We didn't actually draft any of the units, so you won't get much long-term use out of them, but they might be nice in a pinch until you start getting some more drafted characters. You do get Merlinus, though, to help you deal with inventory management and stuff.
<Green> Alright, that should be fine. We got this.
<Athena> Take care, Green!
<Green> You too! See you in Chapter 8, I guess.

Current Team!

Lord Green
- Lv. 2 Lord
DNA - Lv. 1 Paladin
Jabber - Lv. 3 Cavalier

Decisions!

We still have a few things to finalize for our picks!

Member Names: We need to decide whether Vom will be Rutger or Niime. We also need names for Sophia, Gonzales, Astore, and whichever one of Rutger or Niime doesn't go to Vom. Guinivere can still get named, too, but that's optional since she's an NPC.

Supports: Now that units are finalized, we need to decide on who is going to support whom. The full list of available supports can be seen here.

Player Notes

Welcome to Binding Blade! I hardly remember anything about this game, so it's fun to play it again.

As usual, the first chapter starts out very simply. In addition to Green, DNA, and Jabber we also start off with another cav, an archer, and Bors the knight (who gets mentioned in the write-up). Since we're not using them, their main role is to give their weapons to other units, provide plinking damage, visit villages, or otherwise stay out of the way. All the EXP this level went to either Green or Jabber, since DNA doesn't really need it at all at this point, though he did help bringing down units' HP.

Both Jabber and Green are pretty useful at this point. Jabber has excellent starting Spd so he can already double lots of things. Roy got some amazing level up and is proving to be very useful so far. DNA of course has great bases so we'll get some good use out of him for a while.

Otherwise, not much to say, since not much happens. Hope you all enjoyed! Make sure to comment your desires for Supports~

Am I not the king??

Thanks for the catch. It's always hard for me to swap over to member names at the start of a new playthrough and I went back and corrected a bunch before submitting but I forgot that one. :p

Haha... You guys made me the lord again :) Thanks for the vote. It's definitely nice to see Athena sticking with the 'emblem.
Since Vom has already a name, I would second BB into Astore.

p.s Will you be doing Fates as a playthrough?

p.s Will you be doing Fates as a playthrough?

Definitely! :D All 3 paths preferably, though I'll probably do a poll on which people would like to see first. However, I'd like to play through each path on my own before I do any as a playthrough. and we still don't have a release date yet, so it will probably be a while...

If they're the king, then who is the queen!?

I'll let you borrow my old 3ds and games for it, totally will spoil everything for you though.

Oh no problem, Unlike my character I'm a somewhat merciful king :) Also you're my kid from last playthrough.

I'm not a very good matchmaker, so I agree with the suggestions TGK and Skyleaf made :p

Also Fire Emblem Fates sounds like a really fun game to make a playthrough of. I really can't wait. I'm almost considering importing a second hand US 3DS plus Fire Emblem Fates.

Chapter 2: The princess actually is in this castle

And so Green takes his retainers and goes off to a small border village between Pherae and Bern. It's here that he's supposed to meet up with the mercenary forces hired by Lord Eliwood. The village is located close to a small castle in Bern that keeps watch over the border.

Meanwhile, at said border castle, a distraught Wyvern Rider confronts an aging knight...

<Skyleaf> Come on, you have to tell me what happened to Princess Mora!
<Ruud> I... I wish I could, Captain, but I don't know. I'm certain she was in her room this morning, but...
<Skyleaf> Yes, I already heard your story that she supposedly just "vanished" and that's all you know. I don't want to hear your meaningless excuses, you overweight baboon!
<Ruud> Well... I... er....
<Skyleaf> We're just about to start a full-scale war with Lycia. How are we supposed to focus on fighting if the bloody princess is missing?
<Ruud> ... ... ...
<Skyleaf> Whatever the cause, I'm holding you fully responsible for this debacle. She should never have been allowed to come this close to the fighting anyway. I'm going to fly to the capital and let King Robin know what happened, and whose fault it is. *glare* I trust you will take every measure to locate her while I'm gone. *flies off*
<Ruud> *sigh* Finally, she's gone. You over there, the princess is secure, yes?
<Soldier> Yep. She's in the cellar under constant surveillance.
<Ruud> Excellent. Make sure she doesn't escape. We should earn ourselves a fancy sum selling the king's sister to one of Bern's enemies. It's not like I give a crap about the King and his stupid little war when I can make some good money on the side.
<Soldier> Ummm... well, I have some bad news, sir. It seems that the princess's lady-in-waiting managed to escape. There's a chance she may talk to someone...
<Ruud> Ohshi- mobilize troops and find her, fast!

Meanwhile with our small troop of heroes...

<DNA> Well, this is where we're supposed to meet the mercenaries... but I don't see anyone here yet.
<Jabber> Wait, who's that over there?
<Green> It appears to be a cleric woman. And in quite a hurry, too.
<Elen> Pardon me good sirs! Do you happen to hail from Lycia?
<Green> Yep. My dad's the Marquess of Pherae even. Can we help you?
<Elen> Oh, dear me, I sure hope so. You must rescue my mistress, and quickly!
<DNA> Whoa there. Slow down and tell us what happened.
<Elen> My mistress and I... we came here from Bern on our way to speak with some of the Lycian lords, but we were captured and held prisoner by the man in charge of nearby castle, Commander Ruud. To think that my lady would be held captive by one of her own countrymen...
<DNA> Oh, jeez, we really ought to avoid getting ourselves in any kind of a mess with Bern than we already are...
<Green> But I can't just sit by while a noble lady of Bern looking to hold dialogue is captured, either...
<Soldier> *runs up* Over here guys! I found the chick Commander Ruud wants! Dead or alive, let's grab her!
<Elen> Oh dear... *hides behind Green*
<DNA> Well, I guess we don't have much of a choice, now.
<Green> Sister Elen, you should go hide. We'll take care of this.
<Elen> Don't worry about me, good sir, I can heal you guys up in a fight!
<Green> Well, alright, but be careful, ok?

The castle was on the otherside of a large mountain, so Green and the others were forced to detour to the south and go around. A decent contingent of soldiers was blocking the pass, but Green and Jabber were able to take care of them swiftly while DNA rode ahead to scout for more enemy troops and hold the line back.

About halfway through the battle, the mercenaries Eliwood hired arrived, led by Dieck. They were eager to join into the fight, so Green sent their Pegasus Knight, Thany, to go gather supplies from nearby shops while the others fell in line. Soon, the soldiers were gone, and it was only Ruud himself at the gate that stood between Green's forces and rescuing Elen's mistress. DNA had picked up a nice Armorslayer from the village, so he traded it over to Green to make quick work of the knight boss.

<DNA> Lord Green! We've found the woman Elen was talking about locked in the cellar. Here she is, safe and sound.
<Elen> Your highness! <3
<Mora> Oh, thank goodness you're safe, Elen, I was so worried, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for getting these good people to save me. May I ask your name?
<Green> Oh, uh, I'm Green, Marquess Pherae's son.
<Mora> It is a pleasure to meet you, Lord Green. I am Princess Mora.
<Green> Mora? As in, the Princess of Bern, King Robin's sister?!
<Mora> Yep, that's me.
<DNA> Is this some kind of trap or trick?
<Mora> I don't blame you for doubting me, I guess.
<Green> So, wait, let me get this straight. Elen said you wanted to meet up with the Lycian League... but if you're really the princess, why would you do that?
<Mora> I hope to find a peaceful solution to end the war. I was hoping that if I could speak with the lords we could come to some kind of agreement.
<Green> But the entire war is all because of your brother!
<Mora> Yes, that's true, and I'm very sorry for it. I only hope to do what I can to end it.
<Green> Well, I guess I can understand that, and I wish you luck in your quest. We can escort you to the Lycian Armies to speak with Lord Hector, if you'd like.
<Mora> Thank you! That would be splendid.

Player Notes

Another fairly short simple chapter. The soldiers have such low stats they're laughable. The biggest issue was too many enemies suiciding on units we're not using, which is a waste of exp. :U That's why I ended up sending DNA forward.

So it seems that despite being the sister of a bloodthirsty king, Princess Mora is hoping to find a peaceful solution to the war. Good luck. >_> I didn't realize/remember how much of a narrative role Merlinus has in this game so I'm mostly giving his lines to DNA for now.

Next chapter, we'll be picking up our next unit, TGK. That'll give us a few more attacking options anyway.

Hope you enjoyed the chapter! Remember to vote for Supports, please! <3

<Ruud> Excellent. Make sure she doesn't escape. We should earn ourselves a fancy sum selling the king's sister to one of Bern's enemies. It's not like I give a crap about the King and his stupid little war when I can make some good money on the side.
How Ruud of him.

<Elen> My mistress and I... we came here from Bern on our way to speak with some of the Lycian lords, but we were captured and held prisoner by the man in charge of nearby castle, Commander Ruud. To think that my lady would be held captive by one of her own countrymen...
how very Ruud of him.

Chapter 3: Enter TGK, the shota mage

Green happened to remember that the Lycian Army was currently camped in Araphen, so he led his contingent of troops and the Princess Mora in that direction. They were about a day's march from the castle when a messenger ran up bringing dire news: Castle Araphen had been attacked by 2 of Bern's notorious Wyvern Generals, Brunja and Narcian, and the Lycian Army was in a shambles...

At Castle Araphen...

<Brunja> Milord, we've got the Lycian Commander here for you.
<Robin> Good, bring him here. >:3
<Hector> You black-hearted fiend! >:|
<Robin> Well, look who's here, Hector of House Ostia. You did well to last so long against my Generals. Truly, the strength of Ostia has not been exaggerated. Of course, the strength is a worm is not nearly enough to stop my boot from crushing it.
<Brunja> Ooooh, sick burn, milord.
<Robin> If you have any words to say before I end your miserable life, Hector, I suggest you say them quickly.
<Hector> I've never been a man for fancy words or speeches, but I do want to know why. Why did you do this? Lycia and Bern have always respected each other...
<Robin> Respect? You think I ever respected you? Don't make me laugh. I will conquer the entire world as this is the only way to truly liberate it. I have no time for petty concepts like respect.
<Hector> You mean to "liberate" the world...?
<Robin> Oh, pay my words about the future no heed. You won't live to see it anyway. You there, soldier, take this dead man and toss him into the dungeons.
<Brunja> I should leave as well and get back to Sacae, milord. But, if I may say something before I leave...
<Robin> Yes...?
<Brunja> It is my humble opinion that you should not put much trust in that... woman, Idoun. My men find her very... disturbing. They call her the Dark Priestess. I think--
<Robin> Do you doubt my judgement, Brunja?
<Brunja> Of course not, milord.
<Robin> Then you should do less thinking and more order-following.
<Brunja> Of course, milord. Your will be done. *bows and leaves*

Meanwhile, with our heroes, Lord Green speaks with a messenger...

<Green> So, Marquess Hector is still alive then?
<Chad> Well, I saw him taken into the castle... the way he was fightin' and cussin' I don't think they'd have put that much effort into capturing him alive if they didn't mean to keep 'im that way.
<Green> Hmmm... say, do you know the interior of the castle well?
<Chad> Sure, but... oh, wait, no. HELL no. I am not going to help you guys try and break him out. I am not suicidal enough for that.
<Green> Oh, come on, it won't be so bad. You yourself said that most of their soldiers left already anyway. I simply can't let Marquess Hector stay a prisoner if I can help it. We need him too much.
<Chad> *sigh* Fine, fine, if you're going to go anyway, I may as well help you ought as much as I can. You'll need someone to open up chests and door and crap anyway.
<Mora> Lord Green... I'm so sorry for my brother's actions. I really didn't think he'd be moving this quickly.
<Green> Not your fault, so don't apologize. There's still hope. We just need to save Lord Hector and re-mobilize the army. Come on everyone, let's go!

Green led the majority of his troops slowly towards the castle's entrance, taking down enemies as they went. DNA, however, had a separate mission to visit and warn the village to the northwest of the castle. There he came across a young, green-haired boy dressed as a mage.

<TGK> Hello there! Are you with the Lycian Army?
<DNA> Yes...? Who's asking? >_>
<TGK> Please let me come fight with you! My name is TGK and I'm studying magic.
<DNA> *shrugs* Sure, why not, come along, kid.

Meanwhile, in the castle...

<Robin> Narcian, what are those sounds coming from outside?
<Narcian> Some stragglers are probably putting up a last-effort push. Don't worry, we'll handle them shortly.
<Idoun> Shall I summon the dragons, your highness?
<Robin> Nah, there's no need for that. We need to be getting back to Bern anyway. Narcian, I leave Lycia in your capable hands. Kill all who stand against you.
<Narcian> Even the women and children, milord?
<Robin> Did I stutter? Kill all who stand against you, no matter who they are. We will grind out any possibility for rebellion before it ferments.
<Narcian> Excellent, milord. I will be happy to carry our your will. >:3
<Robin> Good. *leaves with Idoun*
<Narcian> I should be leaving myself. One of the Lycian traitors prepared a gift for me, a beautiful young Etrurian noblewoman, and I'm anxious to... meet her. I'll leave the castle in your control, Captain Slater.
<Slater> Of course, milord. We'll have the Lycian remnants destroyed shortly.
<Narcian> Good! Because if you fail, I'm afraid I'll have to personally disembowel you.
<Slater> Urk...!!
<Narcian> Hehehehe! Take care, captain. *flies off*

Green and Jabber continued to slowly press forward as DNA rode up with TGK on his horse. Since the young mage was squishy and underleveled, they focused on feeding him exp as they progressed through the castle. At some point, TGK got distracted and recognized a friend.

<TGK> Chad! :D
<Chad> TGK! :D What are you doing here?
<TGK> We happened to be hiding nearby. The others escaped and are seeking shelter with the St. Elimine church.
<Chad> So why are you still here? You're not strong enough to fight.
<TGK> I am too! I'm so sick of everyone leaving me behind. I want to grow strong and fight to protect the people I care about.
<Chad> *sigh*

Green sent Chad down south to loot the castle's chests while he, Jabber, DNA, and TGK stormed the boss's room. Working together, DNA and TGK managed to take him down and Green took the throne.

<DNA> Lord Green, we've found Marquess Hector down in the dungeons. He's still alive, but grievously wounded. :\
<Hector> Bah, 'tis just a flesh round. How are you doing, Green?
<Green> Um, sir, I hate to break it to you, but... that looks a bit more serious than a flesh wound. Please, let our medic take a look at you...
<Hector> Oh, that's just a little graveside humour. I know I'm done for. There's no use prolonging the inevitable. My men, the army... we were taken completely by surprise. None of us knew that Bern had the power to summon dragons.
<Green> Wait, what?! o_o;
<Hector> Yup. It's the Scouring all over again.
<Green> Yeah, I know the stories, but... how can Bern summon dragons?
<Hector> Well, I actually do know a surprising amount about dragons and the Scouring, but since the story of my adventures with your dad hasn't technically been written yet, I'm afraid I'm going to have to play dumb and pretend I don't know anything. It'll make your story more exciting anyway.
<Green> Awww, are you sure? Not even one little hint?
<Hector> Well... Bern used to be the home of dragons, you know. Bern's founder, Hartmut, was one of the Eight Legends of the Scouring. Maybe you'll find some clues with that info. However, your most pressing duty is to go to Ostia take command of the remaining bits of the army after I'm dead. Because apparently there's no one better at suited to leading it than the young teenage son of my best friend.
<Green> Wow. Do you really think I stand a chance?
<Hector> Well, you're a video game protagonist, so I think you'll be fine. Besides, there's a weapon in Ostia that will help you battle against dragons. Athena can tell you more about it. Take care of her for me, will you? I wish I could see her one last time... x_x;
<Green> Lord Hector?
<DNA> He's dead, Green.
<Green> Well, that sucks. :\

And so Durban's prediction that Hector would die on the field of battle came true after all. It's almost like the writers of FE7 knew how he was going to die or something... RIP Hector, best lord.

This chapter was very... slow. I knew I wanted to feed as much EXP to TGK as possible, so I forced myself to progress very slowly in order to get TGK up to the front lines and killing as many dudes as possible. Got him up to Lv. 5. Notbad.jpg TGK is very squishy right now, but his offense is good. Basically I just have to keep him off the front lines. He's not quite ORKOing anything except Knights, yet, but he'll get up there in time.

Next chapter will get us another unit, thankfully: Vom as Rutger the Myrmidon. HURRAY! \o/

In the meantime, I hope you all enjoyed the chapter! Please suggest some Supports for us, too.
