Ah ok. I may decide to go with Starmie even though I have to level it up. He can learn ice beam TM and can get psychic as a double for the Fighting Elite 4

At least then all of the Pokemon were available at a reasonable point. I mean seriously, some of these Pokemon like Gligar and Tangela and most of the post game Pokemon aren't particularly strong enough to warrant being withheld until that late in the game.

Try searching in dust clouds at Reversal Mountain. Also, you get random shards if you lose at the PWT.

Yeah, apparently you get Shards as a consolation prize during the PWT. So all you have to go in and lose the first battle and you get free Shards.

Maybe it's because you taught them trust in the first game...
Meaning the original trainer either died, or released them...

I'm guessing if you use Memory Link, this will be different, right?
Also, if that's the case, then that really doesn't make sense that they suddenly trust humans...

If you mean the first time in the desert, just use Riolu or go catch a Sandile/Darumaka.
If you mean the second time, Lucario, Emboar, Flygon, Darmanitan, or pretty much and ground, fighting, or fire type will do the trick.
