Ruling Ditto

No, because then it becomes whatever comes out next.

If you read Ditto's pokebody, it states that if the defending pokemon is no longer the active pokemon, then Ditto chooses another active pokemon to transform into.

So no.

ok so if ditto has 60 damage on him and he knocks out a gyarados that has 100hp and the next pokemon that comes in is a poliwag that has 40hp, does ditto automatically get knocked out because he originally only has 50hp? so what happens?

Yes, because before your opponent brings up the other Pokemon, Ditto already has more damage on him than 50. So, KO.

If that is incorrect, Ditto will still have more than 40 damage on him. KO on Ditto.

side question:
if ditto has 60 damage on it and it KO's garados (who has 100) then the opponent sends up another gyarados, then picks up a prize, and then says: "i can grab a prize because in the time i switched pokemon ditto was KO'D becaus it only has 50 HP"

is he/she right?

I'm not 100% sure about this.

I believe your opponent does take a prize. Ditto's text says that Ditto's HP is the same as the Defending Pokemon, or something like that. If there is no Defending Pokemon, does the body work? I don't think so. So it comes down to Ditto having 60 damage while he can only hold 50 damage. KO.

No. The opponent will NOT take a prize. Ditto does NOT return to its 60 HP self once he KO's something - he IMMEDIATELY becomes whatever your opponent sends out. The reason many people seem to think there is some in between moment is that people tend to be slow on sending out whatever will be next, but there isn't a time in between the KO and the sending up a new defending Pokémon, no time for Ditto to revert back to its old self at least.

Right. The KO of the first Gyarados and the placement of the second Gyarados is instantaneous as far as the game is concerned.

On another ditto note, when it says "You still need the necessary energy to use each attack." Does that also include the TYPE of energy or can I attach any sort of energy from my hand to Ditto and it will be sufficient to execute the attack? Since you have no idea what element your opponent is playing and thus would not be able to always have the same type of energy on hand.

Correct, and if not already stated (This was kind of confusing), If ditto is say, rampardos, takes 120 damage, and kills rampardos, ditto will be knocked out if your oponent sends out a pokemon with a maxinum of 120 hp or less.

You need the same type on energy also.
