A big issue with SFM was the dominance it gave to Caw hybrids (Caw-Go, Caw-Blade, DarkBlade, etc.), especially with the release of Batterskull in New Phyrexia and the Swords of "Two Things" during SoM block.
A big problem with Standard before the bannings were announced was that attendance was down (and I mean REALLY down) at events across the board. Why? People got tired of losing to Jace and to Stoneforge Mystic. No deck had ever had such a dominating sway over Standard, not even Affinity from the original Mirrodin block (the last time cards were banned in Standard.) The previous metagame (Alara and Zendikar) had many viable decks all over the place and getting equal representation at competitive events. This current metgame (Zendikar and Scars of Mirrodin) has.... all of two or three viable decks maybe? Hopefully Wizards puts two and two together, and finally realizes that artifact-heavy sets are fairly overpowered.
In other Jace-related news, did anybody else see the new "Jace, Memory Adept" that releases in Core Set 2012? 3UU gets you a starting four loyalty and these abilities:
+1: Draw a card. Target player puts the top card of his library into his graveyard.
0: Target player puts the top ten cards of his library into his graveyard.
-7: Any number of target players each draw twenty cards.
Seems a bit busted, but remember it doesn't draw you THREE cards at a time, and can't keep itself safe (like Mind Sculptor's Unsummon ability did)
@ShadowSniper: It was indeed called Caw-Go. But when people realized putting Swords in the deck to beat your opponent's colours was awesome sauce, it became Caw-Blade.
