Do you play Magic the gathering?

A big issue with SFM was the dominance it gave to Caw hybrids (Caw-Go, Caw-Blade, DarkBlade, etc.), especially with the release of Batterskull in New Phyrexia and the Swords of "Two Things" during SoM block.

A big problem with Standard before the bannings were announced was that attendance was down (and I mean REALLY down) at events across the board. Why? People got tired of losing to Jace and to Stoneforge Mystic. No deck had ever had such a dominating sway over Standard, not even Affinity from the original Mirrodin block (the last time cards were banned in Standard.) The previous metagame (Alara and Zendikar) had many viable decks all over the place and getting equal representation at competitive events. This current metgame (Zendikar and Scars of Mirrodin) has.... all of two or three viable decks maybe? Hopefully Wizards puts two and two together, and finally realizes that artifact-heavy sets are fairly overpowered.

In other Jace-related news, did anybody else see the new "Jace, Memory Adept" that releases in Core Set 2012? 3UU gets you a starting four loyalty and these abilities:

+1: Draw a card. Target player puts the top card of his library into his graveyard.
0: Target player puts the top ten cards of his library into his graveyard.
-7: Any number of target players each draw twenty cards.

Seems a bit busted, but remember it doesn't draw you THREE cards at a time, and can't keep itself safe (like Mind Sculptor's Unsummon ability did)

@ShadowSniper: It was indeed called Caw-Go. But when people realized putting Swords in the deck to beat your opponent's colours was awesome sauce, it became Caw-Blade.

Yeah but they made Caw-Blade later than Caw-Go. Anyways, now the game is fixed a bit. They us have to stop overpricing cards.Every new planeswalker that comes out is 40 bucks a pop.

I work at a card shop, and since the banning was announced I've heard the following:

"I can start playing Standard again"
"Yeah! Now every other deck has a chance!!"

Stupid question..can you use planeswalkers abilities the turn they come into play, as long as enough counters are on it?

yes the turn the planswalker comes into play you can use it. because it counts as a sorcery. I'm pretty sure you can, because i think i saw online a guy played jace and drew a card with him that turn.

kk thanks. I just started type 2 and have a monogreen infect deck. What do you think the land count should be? I had 18 but 2 of the guys there suggested like 23 which was "standard". Long story short, last round of a t2 tournament I got mana flooded 2 out of 3 games, drawing like 4-5 land in a row, and I 6 pile shuffled and everything before each game and my opponent cut. The flooding caused me to lose the match and the possible 3rd place slot. Should I dumb it down to 20 land, or is 23 good and I just had the MOST HORRIBLE LUCK EVER? lol

The reason why some Magic cards are overpriced is due to the Mythic Rarity, when you see popular cards like Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Baneslayer Angel, and Vengevine see alot of Standard and Legacy Competitive play they shoot up in price alot more than Regular Rares when it's not even necessary to do so but Wizards uses it as an excuse to lower the price of Regular Rares when the Mythics are sometimes just as good as Regular Rares in terms of Competitive play. This isn't just limited to Planeswalkers alone.

Because specific Mythics become overpriced compared to Regular Rares it makes it harder to build decks especially for EDH and Kitchen Table Casual formats to even run cards based on Mythic Rares when it will take at least the amount you pay for a full tank of gas just to even use them. If you want to play with Mythics your best bet is to wait to see If they get banned or rotated out from Standard but If they are just as popular in Legacy tough luck. You can forget about Extended since it's a dead format anyway.

Why can't we go back to when the game had just 3 rarities back in Lorwyn Block when no Regular Rares shot to above $25+ heck Tarmogoyf pushed boundaries in terms of how much really good Magic cards cost but still Tarmogoyf was just as big of a printing mistake from Wizards as was JTMS and Skullclamp have been. I do commend Wizards for bringing Combo back in Standard despite what happened 7 years ago with Dragonstorm.

There's no reason why Standard should cost as much as it is to get into Legacy and because of that it's hurting the Magic Competitive scene drastically but do you know why? Supply and Demand on Cards. That issue is worse in Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! compared to where it isn't nearly as bad in Pokemon and possibly World of Warcraft even.

Wizards is just desperate for money when they don't care about their playerbase trying to spend less on cards and build affordable decks on a budget especially in this economy when people are losing jobs and still struggling to make a living but sadly Wizards only cares about money to stay in business although Star City Games they actually care more about Magic players than Wizards does however I give Wizards credit for helping Magic players get into EDH/Commander.

@Card Slinger J:

Why do you like flame everything?

Some mythics are not that expensive

Elosh: $4-5

Although that's the exception to the rule, the point being is that not ALL mythics are super expensive, just like all primes are not in pokemon, etc

True some Mythics aren't that expensive, it really just depends on the Supply and Demand of them in Standard and Legacy. If they've been rotated out of the format or getting close to it at least then they drop in price drastically unless they are good enough to see play in Legacy.

I remember when Lotus Cobra had alot of hype going for it when Zendikar was about to be released and I ended up having to get a playset of it for Christmas because it was too expensive but as
weeks went on the Demand for it dropped to where it was affordable.

Then when the Titans were released in M10 I believe? Cards like Primeval Titan fetched to around $35 to $40 a pop but it probably still stayed the same since the Demand might still be high for it. I don't go to
Star City Games.com on a daily basis to check on Magic card prices or ChannelFireball.com but from personal experience that's how I know.

Titans were m11 actually. but grave titans which were popular at 32 bucks went down to half price.

I bought a deck, showed up, was appalled by the hobos playing, never touched it again.

@Juliacoolo xD. I went to another comic shop to play across town and the guy had a huge white beard and a raspy voice and used a rag as a playmat.. At my other comic shop that I play at, everyone's normal looking. lol. There's even a few kids(besides me) that play. Everyone looks at us like "You're a teenager yet you play this...You got guts kid" And I just say Ok and own them. Lol.

Lol, I'm sure there are plently of cool people who play, but my parents wouldn't let me go to a tournament when two thirds of the players are smelly 40-year olds who live with their moms.

I went to a pre-release with my dad(this is funny) and my dad was just looking around with a disgusted look in his face and I'm like "Dad, whats wrong?" and he says this "look at these people..(the rest is too explicit XD) and when I finish my game(I had to leave afterwards) the guy I played with(he's a 40 year-old russian sounding guy) and he tells my dad, he's a good player just needs more experience and my dad looks at him with a disgusted look and says oh cool(in his mind he's like *WARNING EXPLICIT CONTENT NOT SHOWABLE ON POKEBEACH* lol.
