(Are we allowed to change the sign of the numbers? That seems like cheating, but thats just me.)
 
What do you mean with the "sign"?

((5-9)+6)*4=8
Had to go into negatives first for this one. :p

(4/4)+2+6=9

I don't see any reason why we can't change sign as it is just using the minus symbol, which we are allowed to use. I could have done that previous calculation without 'changing the sign' easily, I just chose to do it to make it more interesting.

Wouldn't that technically not be allowed? Like wouldn't you have to do say 0 - 9 or something like that? Cause you're given positive integers right?

Uh what? Anyway it doesn't matter at all because
-9-9 = -4-6-8
9+9 = 4+6+8
It's the same thing. And, that negative version is allowed because there is no reason not to allow it.

You're given positive integers that's plenty reason not to allow it. To make +9 -9 you would need an extra zero to do 0-9
That's a reason not to allow it lolz
