Expanded Format for Entirety of Houston's Regionals... Expanded Expanding?

Here's my perspective: I didn't start playing until around Phantom Forces, and didn't invest heavily in pre-XY cards in anticipation of the rotation. I was also planning on being semi-competitive this this season as opposed to playing casually. However, if Regionals are going to force me to buy all those 5+ year old cards at extreme markup, then I'm debating about going the other direction with my playing time and scaling back on my purchases. I can't imagine that I'm the only "newish" player with the same idea.

Personally, I am okay with this. I was not gonna play fully XY-on. Maybe its for nostalgia's sake, but I need my gen 5 cards. I just liked the older metagame. Of course, it is problematic for newer players, and i understand that. I just like the BW era.

Welp, looks like I won't be going to any Regionals next season. I love the rotation, and I don't feel a lack of creativity with a smaller cardpool, as there are still plenty of decks worth building. I've never felt limited in Pokemon, and the only time I don't like the rotation is when a Pokemon or archetype I really liked playing rotates. However, there is no archetype in BW-on that I was particularly fond of, so maybe I'm a bit biased. If this was HGSS-on or D&P: GE-on, I might have a different opinion...

Edit: I should say that I'm all for an Expanded format, but not INSTEAD of standard, and not until the cardpool is MUCH larger. Right now, there's not enough freedom like there is in MtG Modern, so the same decks that were good in standard last season will still be good in Expanded without many changes. It's more like Extended in MtG, which died for a reason...

I'm a very new player and this bothers me to no end. I started playing last November when Phantom Forces was new, and I'm seventeen years old and currently without a job. I have a really hard time building decks and this will only make things more difficult when I want to enter tournaments. I can hardly afford newer, cheaper cards, let alone things from 2011. I certainly won't be going to Regionals this upcoming season. I would think a lot of newer players face the same issue with this announcement.

Also, if standard is still being used at Nationals and Worlds next season, will we have to get championship points by playing Expanded? That seems like it would be really confusing. Basically, you have to earn your spot at the top Standard tournament by being good at Expanded. I would expect that to turn out very poorly. Players would be less prepared for Standard at Nationals and Worlds if they had been playing Expanded for the whole season already. All in all I'm really frustrated with this announcement. Just when I was expecting the game to become more accessible with the XY-on rotation, It was flipped right back around to BW, and more expensive and tough to get cards.

I understand that expanded is getting to be more and more of a thing but still it feels like expanded is for people that can't adapt and its harder for new players because then they need to get cards from like 2 or so years ago and getting cards even from that time is hard to get now.

All i can see with this happening is more lock deck and lock decks are not fun.

I honestly don't see lock decks being all that rampant. If anything the biggest issue is trainer cards- which with this expansion of expanded could mean they intend to reprint things like that. XY-On cards still hold a decent place in both formats.

They may even be willing to reprint good counters to any decks that pop up, or even deliver an occasional set reprint. This is fairly new for Pokemon, and with Skyla being announced as a XY reprint it may mean they have no problem digging further back into reprints.

Has this been announced as an English Language release yet? From what I saw it was questionable as to whether it would be a thing outside of Japan

If it's XY-P then they will have no choice but to release it sooner or later in English because even with this Expaned format - it would still be required to have a print in Standard.

This is the worst news ever. What is the point in even having a rotation?! This is just going to become just as bad as MTG. The rotation helps keep the format fresh and clean. Now its just going to be stale and lame. Way to go!
I totally agree. I hate expanded. What's the point? Just have two separate events!

I agree with you I wish they did somthing like they do on pokemon tcg online and have standard and expanded format be two different events. Then again this would split up the community and I can't think of anything good coming of that.

On the fence about this, Currently i think the current standard format is bad, so much lame stuff atm
Though i haven't ever played B/W on, i quit just before B/W so im a lil interested

My main problem with this is that we are going to see near exactly the same deck archetypes as this year, which completely ruins the creativity that comes up from a new rotation. Would Citys still be Standard?

I wouldn't underestimate the impact of Ancient Origins. "Broken Vine Space" seems pretty dang strong in Expanded. Shiftry NXD for example seems pretty dang strong.

I don't think we really know at this point. My guess would be yes. The only thing that we really know at this point is that Regionals will be Expanded.

I guess I'm more saying that more or less there are going to be very similar decks, bar a few only possible in Expanded. I'm not trying to underestimate BVS or anything - I certainly think It'll shake things up, but I wish it was not just a single card shaking things up but a whole format change :/
