Writing First Quarterly PokéBeach Short Story Competition (Congratulations, Artemis!)

RE: ATTENTION: First Quarterly PokéBeach Short Story Competition (The contest is underway; the application process is closed.)

Starting to make some good progress on my story, now. After hammering out the characters and situation in my head for the past few... well, pretty much since I signed up, I wrote down mini-bios for all the characters I have made up so far, as well as the history of the island where the story takes place. Today, I've actually started writing the story itself and its progressing along well. Pretty exciting to be officially starting this now, since it's been some time since I've had a serious creative writing project to work on and I've forgotten how much I've missed it.

I FINALLY decided on what I'm doing for this event. Took me forever though. It will probably be the full ten chapters in length and the Title can always change if I think of something that fits better for now "Changing Time" is my title. I have characters and the first two chapters. I'm excited to finally be writing something for this

Just a reminder to everyone, the due date is September 1st. You guys have about a month to go!

I'm actually making some good progress on mine, which is surprising.

I feel sad that I've ran into a writer's block and now I don't know how to continue my story. I've started working on Chapter Four now.

Well, it is not imperative that you write ten chapters. If you feel like you can end it wherever your writer's block occurred, that is acceptable.

RE: ATTENTION: First Quarterly PokéBeach Short Story Competition (The contest is underway; the application process is closed.)

After taking a break earlier in the week to write a fairy tale in Dutch for my Dutch homework, I got back to work on my story today. I'm sitting at about 4.5k words right now and I think things are progressing pretty well.

Is it sad that I have no idea if my story is going to under- or overshoot my projected length mark? :p The very basic outline is still very strong, but so much else has changed, mostly because I'm typically the sort of writing who lets the story go where it wants to go rather than forcing it around. Guess we'll just have to see!

Haha, all this hype. I can't wait to start reading these! Just over 3 weeks left to go.

No.

Because of this.

Scrapped my first story after I found inspiration in the shower. About one-sixteenth through the second now.

/me kicks writer's block out of the way.

FINALLY.
FREEDOM FROM THE HORRID PRISON OF WRITER'S BLOCK.

I should submit my story in about one week and a half, hopefully if not sooner. :D

Yeah, true enough. Hence why I only made a rough estimate when signing up anyway. Right now I'm just hoping that it won't be so tremendously long that people will be afraid to read it. :p I guess we'll see in a couple weeks or so when I'm finally done with it.

Also, very glad to hear your writer's block is gone, Luckyfire! It can be a bitch for sure, especially when you're working on a deadline. I hit a bad writer's block in the middle of my NaNo novel a few years ago that kept me out of the competition for over a week. Thankfully, I was able to pick back up and speed through the end and still get me word count in time, but it was rough. Keep going strong!

Quick question(s): Does the prologue count as one of our ten chapters? And is there any sort of max to the word count?

The prologue, generally, is not part of the ten chapters, but you may do as you please with this one. There is no maximum word count.

RE: First Quarterly PokéBeach Short Story Competition (The contest is underway; the application process is closed.)

I'm at about 6400 words now, and pretty sure that I'm going to undershoot my initial word-count guess, just based on how the story is progressing. Another good writing session or two should have me finished up, then a final read-through and I'll post it up. I've decided to forgo a stricter editing process this time, mostly for time, but I will probably do more editing after the contest is over and done with as I work forward with the story further.

Is it ok if I don't divide my story into chapters? It ruins the flow. I fear that this question has been asked, but is there a maximum word count?

Since everyone's talking about word counts, I guess I'll mention mine, too. It's currently at 6.7k words now, excluding the two uncompleted chapters I have yet to finish. I guess it's a good thing I recovered quickly from the writer's block.

I mentioned in my application that I wasn't planning on using a chapter system in my story and it was still approved, so you should be fine.

Thanks homies! Great. I'll be finishing up my story in a bit. I think I'll have to turn it in on the due date. Aiyaaaa.
