Pandamore brings up a very valid point that I feel you're skipping over.
First to note here is that it's already a stretch in the budget to go ahead and try to smooth over into better foods. Now it may be cheaper to buy lettuce than processed meat. But--is it cheaper to buy fresh, grade A meat over the 'slop'? Absolutely not. It costs a lot more. And on top of that, students at first probably will be reluctant to try new menu items. I know that when I get out of my 4th period class to get lunch, I want to know that my lunch will be good, or I feel gypped; especially 'since it is already so expensive. If students aren't choosing the new items, there's no point, especially because food is perishable. It's a lot of money wasted for the school.
To raise the price of lunch one dollar or more would be an outrage. That dollar, every day adds up to quite a bit of money. It's already too expensive. It's this kind of thinking, that food should be improved, that actually lowered the quality of food at my school. We used to get food made for the school by local businesses such as Cuca's Mexican Food, Team Pizza, and Souplantation. These were all high-quality, delicious, and not-so-expensive foods that provided ample nutrition. (Take into account that these are all restaurants, however, so they give customers their money's worth.) The portions were pretty big, and the caloric content was too much. Someone was convinced that the large portions were what was making kids unhealthy. We now are served meals half as big and half the quality.
I just don't see the point in complaining about what the school serves. It's all choice. If someone is 500 pounds, and he has the choice of Team Pizza or a salad, what will it be? Well, if he really cared about losing weight, he'd choose the salad. But does he? No. Why? I'm tempted! It was there! It's infuriating when people blame others for their own bad choices.
Everyone's so obsessed with convenience. School food is there for convenience, so that you don't have to pack food and bring it to go. If you don't like what they're serving, bring something from home! If you really want something in life, chances are you're going to have to take the difficult path to get it, and don't expect for it to just come to you. That's selfish and it probably won't happen. You have other options, they just take a little more work. Please stop trying to make others bend over backwards for your selfish 'needs'.
