Forum Rules Updated and Posted - All Members Must Read

I'm currently trying to figure out if we can change the avatar rule back to what it used to be (anyone can use any rule-abiding avatar), or at the very least back to restricting users from using the same avatar as a staff member. Once I have the answer I'll be sure to post here about it if I can (or maybe there will be some kind of forum-wide notice if the rule changes).

Didn't you have for a while that you would modify avatars for mods to use and mods only if they wished to use one?

Yeah, and if we go back to the staff avatar rule, that's what I'll have to start doing again. No news yet on the rule, though.

This sub-forum has only three threads in it. If I was to post a thread, what should it be about?

Nothing, members can't post threads here. This forum is only for forum news.

I plan to use one of the avatars myself... but I think I'll just ask Xous before I use that avatar so I don't copy someone else's avatar. Now I plan to not because I've got a LPG-only avatar that no one else can copy. Also, there should be a rule to ask before using a avatar to see if anyone else is using it.

The problem is...Xous would have to keep track of EVERY avy that goes out and if it is already used by a mod. Just make it so that anyone can use any avy and tell everyone to learn to read member names...and look at userbars....

Rule Update: Rule #15

The avatar portion of Rule #15 has been updated to state the following:

The Forum Rules said:
15. Do not attempt to impersonate another member or user group.
Avatars are how many people identify other users. Never copy another member's custom avatar and use it as your own. In addition, never use a staff member's avatar. Doing so will result in a ban.

In case it wasn't obvious, "custom avatar" refers to an avatar made specifically for that user. Basically any avatar that isn't for everyone to use. If you see a user with an avatar you'd like to use and you're not sure if it's custom / available for everyone to use, I'd suggest you PM them and ask. Hopefully this new wording won't cause too many issues.

Uh Xous don't you think we should have a list of all the user avatars that way no one can copy or use the same avatar or make a requirement for the users that change avatars frequently to check the members list so they can see which ones have or have not been used. Which means if you see it on the members list DON'T USE THE AVATAR.:)

We've been over this - mostly in Xous' thread. Making a list like that would be too much of a hassle. You can scroll back through the topics to read the conversation for yourself - all the relevant info has been covered.

How about making it a requirement to check the active members list? It is located just below your login information at the top left hand side of the forums. Members need to check the frequent members list before using or making avatars. If the mods enforce this then it will make things a lot easier.:)

Are you suggesting that we look through all 12,663 members just to make sure one avatar is not being used? That is absurd! I don't think anyone in the right mind would want to check through that many members just to see what avatars are being used.

No, we only suggest that you look at the last page of this thread.

If that what it takes to make sure it is legal why not do that just to make sure? I meant that active members. The ones that are currently active during a months span. If they have not been on for a month don't worry about theirs. We gotta do something to prevent the use of the same avatar. If this is what it takes to check might as well get started now rather than later XD. I am sure the mods do this all the time also. I know some of the mods do check the lists for hours at a time XD.:)

Here...go to member list...then staff and BOOM you can't copy an avy of the staff...but the question is...what if a mod uses your avy without you knowing? Would you be forced to change it? The mods could torture us member with that xD

If a moderator somehow accidentally uses a normal member's avatar, then yes, I believe the moderator should be the one to change their avatar. A moderator would not (or should not) use another member's avatar knowingly with the intent to torture them. Normally moderators use their own custom avatar.

For those saying we need to keep track of what avatars are in use, aside from the avatars I provide to the forums, I don't think, in the past few months or more, I've ever seen anyone else using the same avatar as someone else. Normally people go to shops or make their own custom avatars, so repeats are extremely rare.
