RE: The Lounge

@Chiirami: There was a slight rule change on poetry I made a little while back. Make sure it's at least a few stanzas long or at least a relatively decent length, otherwise the thread needs to have more than on poem/short story in it. I was getting tired of seeing spammy little poems some people were posting off and on here in multiple threads that could just have all been in one. So long as it's more than just a couple lines, though, it will be fine.

I don't know about that, Zenith. Do you remember when CH and Zyflair kept passing eachother hard-core critics on eachothers stories? That was insane.

Anyways, I'm having trouble incorperating humor into a story that has to be serious every once in a while. Any suggestions?
Psh, CH (And Zenith in several aspects when he's not trying to amuse himself) was clearly better; she has been in the writing field for much longer, and clearly dedicated to it. Meanwhile, I ditch writing because I can't keep up with the effort it takes, and criticism, as Oscar Wilde puts it, are for those that haven't been to a University ("They do is so well in the daily papers"). I favor role-playing because it does not require as much thinking (neither does writing unless you don't want it to suck), and is much more plot-forgiving.

Humor tends to be balanced with a character that is specifically used for comic relief. Borrowing a page from Shakespeare, there are characters that, while important in the plot, have some hilarious trait (stupidity not excluded) that lets the mood lighten up. Take instance, from Hamlet, where there is news of a suicide. The news of this terrible event is levied with humor in the following dialogue:
"Drowned?! Oh where!?"
In the water, our not-so smart character soon learns. A little ridiculous, but hey, people goof, and literature shouldn't be an exception. However, to goof in writing isn't a good idea, and keep your ideas in check within reasonable boundaries. To let your plot slip once can be regarded as a misfortune. To let it slip twice seems like carelessness. ;D

Kthxbai!

RE: The Lounge

Meh, I'm not sure that's always the right attitude to have when critiquing other people's work, Zenith, but if nobody takes it the wrong way, I guess it's okay. As for me, I've actually gotten behind on critiques I've been wanting to do. But, I guess in hindsight it isn't that big of an issue.

RE: The Lounge

Essentially, my goals for critique are:

1. Amuse myself.
2. Attempt to improve their writing.
3. Amuse others.

That's why I don't critique things very often. If someone wants me to I'll do it, or if I see something that I want to comment on and believe that the author will be able to take my critique I'll do it.

RE: The Lounge

Speaking of which...

I saw Hatman's Maximum Overdrive, and you might want to check that out. Awesome prologue, man.

RE: The Lounge

Thanks Arceus! I wouldn't mind if you critiqued my fic, but you don't have to.

Anyways, is it normal for Chapters to skip several years ahead of when the prologue took place?

RE: The Lounge

Yes, that's perfectly normal. A prologue sets the groundwork for the story; if, for example, the story is about some ancient evil being unleashed (don't write about this, it's an example) then you may want to show the actual event in the prologue. Another example - the first Harry Potter book starts with Harry being dropped off at the Dursley's. The next chapter then cuts to him being 10-11 years old. It's a standard (and useful) practice.

RE: The Lounge

Would anyone care to read an essay I wrote and possibly critique it or give me you opinion?

RE: The Lounge

@Hatman: Feral Twilight has a twenty-two year gap between the prologue and first chapter, not to mention it's disjointed until later on in the story (as I had it originally). So long as it sets up or ties into the plot, it's okay.

@Darkvoid: Sure thing! Post it in the forum, and I'll try and get to it as soon as I can (or you can just post it here if you want, as it is an open thread for advice and discussion anyways. Just use quote tags for it like so "
" with a backslash or "/" where the essay ends).

Also, I just wanted to remind everyone that the Celestic Archives are still open. If your fanfic qualifies, just apply in the thread and I'll add it to the list of active stories. I'm also planning on making a few other revisions to the thread to keep it somewhat organized.

Sure thing. Once I find a time slot, I'll be on it.

Really? I found it hilarious. Then again, I'm constantly a bystander and find everything hilarious.

RE: The Lounge

Um, if I leave my fanfic for a while, longer than two weeks, will I be able to revive it again? I posted in the title that it was closed for a bit, but will I be able to go back to it? This does not mean i'm giving up on it!

8. Double posting for authors is okay if they have another installment to post.
Sometimes a story gets no love, or the author was the last person to post in his or her thread. Should this be the case, it’s okay for the author to make a double post to update his or her story. Added: However, do NOT bump another person’s story, especially if you were the last one to post! You aren’t the author, just the reader.
As far as I know, if it's your own story, you can revive it whenever. There doesn't appear to be any sort of time limit to bumping.

RE: The Lounge

@AnimeUSA: I update Feral Twilight's fakedex at least once a month (or at least have been up to this point). There's no time limit, but I'd recommend not letting things go for too long if you can help it.

RE: The Lounge

Just look at 7 Days of Terror. That took 6 years to make, and one of the later updates took 6 months.

RE: The Lounge

Yay, finally, Post Number 500 (of those that officially count)! Five hundred more and I'll reach a thousand!

Likewise, there's the option of just restarting things if your stories dead for month. I've done that several times on other sites, and even restarted Biohazard just yesterday (since I closed the old thread anyways). There aren't rules against that, and sometimes a fresh start helps refocus your mind.

RE: The Lounge

Perfectly. My only concern is for poems that are less than (oh, say) ten lines or maybe even shorter that. I'm not trying to stymie those; I just think it's annoying to see a bunch of really short poems posted all around the forum, which was why I changed the rule to either a decent length or more than one in a thread (preferably the latter, but either works).
