RE: The Lounge

I'm trying not to get into the habit of bumping this thread too much, but aside from keeping it going, I also find myself needing a little bit of advice on some of my own projects. Currently I'm thinking about reviving the poetry and short stories thread I started back in November but never got around to continuing. I've been digging up some of my old poetry from college and a mini-novel I started but never really got around to finishing. I'm wondering if I should take the time out to revise them or just post them as is.

RE: The Lounge

Intriguingly, older works may harbour a glint of charm that persuades you not to alter it. In my experience, a previously abandoned or long hiatus composition can be quite enticing to read just the way it is – it is like reading a brand new story. I sometimes find myself wanting to change a few things (i.e. vocabulary choice, grammar structure, dialogue, etc.) out of sheer necessity to satisfy personal tastes and dissuade any lurking peeves. Perhaps you should do a quick edit before posting and then let the audience responsively deliver their opinions on it – then, you could perform a second edit or major revision if necessary.

Poetry is another embodiment entirely. I believe it is a raw expression of creativity, like a spontaneous painting; once it is finished, it may be too beautiful in its own quirky way to delve into it again. I have edited old poetry a couple of times, but only because of syntax errors. It depends on the writer, though – some poets can revise their stanzas and such without qualm. I tend to leave mine alone, for fear of creating a mess (chuckles).

I had a question of my own:

I recently thought about font size tags. I understand that it is discouraged, though an idea surfaced. What about a pseudo drop cap or initial? It is commonly found in novels, in a variety of sizes. Would this be considered too unprofessional to use in a forum?

RE: The Lounge

UU-The issue with having the big letter before the chapter--that is, if that was what you were taling about--is that it doesn't look nearly as good with the usual choice of fonts you have on forums. On MW, it's great.

I actually have a question myself.

If you post a story that you intend to be published on a forum, and you finish it, and try to get it published, is there any real issues I should be worried about?

RE: The Lounge

@aggiegwyn: Honesty I have no idea. Most fictions posted in online forums or even writing websites are often assumed to be public domain (or at least that's what I was always told). Even if you are the author, issues brought up by just having it online may prevent it from actually be able to get published in real life (if this is what you're asking). Though, I did have two conversation with people who claimed to have gotten works published but also had things online, but I don't know what was published and what was just only.

@UU: Personally I hate leaving things unkempt and unrefined, so I usually do go back and revise anyways. Also, regarding your question, I'd rather you not alter font size beyond maybe in chapter titles. I know some books do this, and even Porygon-X brought up the issue of tag use the other night and I just told him not excess, but I still discourage it.

RE: The Lounge

Um, hey, mind if I revive White Diamond? I finished the next chapter,(finally!), soo, yeah i think you'll like this one!

RE: The Lounge

AUSA- You can revive your own stories whenever you want(I think.) It's reviving other people's stuff that is against the rules.

AtI-Okay then. I will just post the fan-fic I'm working on instead. That'll be more fun, anyways.

RE: The Lounge

@AUSA: By all means, go right ahead! I'll be doing the same with Feral Twilight in the next day or so, so it's perfectly fine for you to do so with your story.

@aggiegwyn: Sorry if I wasn't much help on the matter, but I honestly don't know what else I could say...

RE: The Lounge

Is she published? That's cool if she is, but even if not, she probably would know more on the subject than I do. I'm just a pastime writer and haven't gotten anything beyond a couple shorts published, but even then they were just in small time journals and nothing I made money on.

Also, on a lighter note, this is the first time in a while anyone's called me 'AtI.' It's fine, of course, but worth a little bit of a laugh (for me anyways) since the last person who started that was another guy with the username 'Apollo' on a different forum.

RE: The Lounge

AtI- Oh, sorry. I just was too lazy to write out your whole name, and I didn't even think of just putting Apollo...
-_-"

Anyways, does a dissertation count as published? Along with a blog?

RE: The Lounge

@aggiegwyn - Thank you for replying! Ah, I see. That makes sense :3

P.S. - I hope you're okay! Feel better!

@Apollo the Incinermyn – I wish you the best in the editing process! :3

I apologize; I have a second question:

Has the Writer's Corner ever had an RP section and/or group?

RE: The Lounge

@aggiegwyn: Yes, dissertations do. They're graduate books that do officially get published, though they aren't for distribution as opposed to just proof that a scholar has attained a certain degree of knowledge (in addition to an actual diploma, of course) and has made the fact known with said book. I actually asked one of my English professors in junior college, and she said almost that exact thing to me. I'll admit that I might be off on my facts just a little, since it's been a few years, but dissertations themselves are only written by people who get Master's degrees or doctorates, so it's very good accrediation (sp?) too.

@UU: RPs are really held in the Game Corner, I think. Though I know they have a lot in common with fanfics (or are at least associated with them), they're not really something you're supposed to start here. I have to apologize, though, since I usually don't play them a whole lot...

RE: The Lounge

@UU: I don't think the Writer's Corner has ever had a group, but there is a club that exists on Pokebeach that's heavily fanfic based - it's called "the Writer's Haven".

@the rest: Also, would it technically be acceptable to bump your own fic, even if you think no one really shows any interest in it? I want to do that with mine but I know it's being ignored repeatedly, so should I bother?

RE: The Lounge

UU- Oh, thanks. I guess you heard about the crash, I should be fine.

AtI-Yah, my mom spent 12 years(at least) in college and became a professor. Now she teaches the classes.
:D

RE: The Lounge

@DNA: You do remember the rules allow that, right? So long as it's not constant bumping, it's perfectly acceptible. Besides that's what I do anyways whenever I post a new section of the Ronac Fakedex to my Feral Twilight fic (and my only real audience for it was Zyflair, and he's gone for now).

@aggiegwyn: Then that's more than proof she's legit. My only concern was if she was just an unknown writer, then her credentials would've came into question. But working that long definitely dispells any doubt she's more than qualified.

I didn't mean to insinuate anything nasty by bringing that issue up. It's just there are a lot of people out there who would say they're qualified to do, talk about, or teach something, but don't have anything to back it up. This is why I make it clear that I'm just a hobbyist who knows some things but can't rightly claim he knows everything. I apologize if I offended you by asking questions, and again I didn't mean anything nasty by it.

RE: The Lounge

AtI-Hah, I wasn't really offended, just sort confused about your curiousity in my mother.
XD

RE: The Lounge

Yeah, I'm sorry if you misconstrued me. I try to be clear that I'm just trying to make sure sources are legit. I'm not some weirdo trying to weed information out of others or anything, but over the Internet it's hard to take stuff at face value, so I apologize again if I said anything that sounded wrong...

RE: The Lounge

Yeah, that's my thing. Up there, slap bang in the middle. I hate it. I hate it more than anything I've every written, but... That's that.

RE: The Lounge

I skimmed through most of your 'journal' (as you called it), Chiraami. I left a quick response and hope to give a more in depth discussion on it later, but I think you should take into consideration some of what you write if you're doing it directly off your life.
