Gyarados deck and Metagame discussions...

Garchomp

Ultimate fail!!

Hi. I'm going to a BR in a few weeks and would like to know what is the Metagame at the BR(s) you went to.

Also, I've heard people talking about Gyarados decks... What is the strategy of this deck? Is it the SF Gyarados? And what can be used to counter it?

Thanks.

the strategy for the Gyarados is to discard 3 Magikarp and do 90 for no energies with the SF Gyarados

not sure about the BR part of the post, but i don't think anyone can answer very well, as each metagame is different

Metagame- Luxray variants, Flygon variants, Palkia variants, Beedrill variants, Gengar variants. There might be some new cards there too but that should pretty much cover everything.

Gyarados runs a lot of Supporters, making it lock proof. Then it uses Sableye as a starter to start discarding Magikarps quickly and sometimes uses Registeel or Regice to discard more. Then it usually runs some techs against SPs. It needs Broken Time-Space and Pokemon Rescue to keep the Gyarados coming.

Techs against sp's?what kind of techs?

Pachirisu or Promocroak could be anti-SP techs in Gyarados.

dmaster out.

Pachi and Promocroak. There's not enough energy for Mewtwo. Mankey or Relnicath sometimes works because Croak needs 2 energy to get charged up, leaving it open for a Bright Look and KO.

Its a common mistake to think that Gyarados needs any Anti-SP cards - it is perfectly capable of plowing right through them without those.

Agreed. Stuff like PromoCroak is nice, but not necessary.

I'm testing a Gyarados right now and it runs fine against SPs without those counters.

Didn't he just say that Gyarados doesn't need those techs? I actually believe that if you ARE going to run any sort of tech card then run a Mr.Mime [MT]. I know that you don't have a boomerang attack, but it helps the match against the near impossible Beedrill matchup. Because while they're likely to get their entire line recycled every time, Gyarados isn't going to always be able to. So just stall a bit until you can get another out.

Beedrill is near impossible?

Thats a new one.

I'd have to agree with you, Lou. I mean, you can always Donk Weedle with Sableye, which last time I checked, any good Gyarados deck plays those... if you don't donk them, though, yeah, it's near impossible.

So you saying this matchup is not impossible to win but the only way is to donk their weedle which the deck IS NOT EVEN DESIGNED TO DO.

I'd beg to differ.

It's all based on how fast you can set up and get 3 Karps in the Discard before you opponent can set up 3 Beedrills. Even though Beedrill has great recovery, so does Gyarados. Both sides pretty much 2HKO eachother however Gyarados can easily make that into a OHKO as any good Gyarados list should be playing Crobat G's and Poketurn/SSU so its all based on speed really. its a hard, bit winable match-up.

Just as a note: i don't play any {D} in my Gyarados deck as i'd rather use the space for other things instead of potentially trying to get a T1 donk

And what stops a Beedrill list from running any PlusPowers, Buck's Training, or Crobat G with Poketurn/SSU? Beedrill only needs an extra 10 to OHKO Gyarados while Gyarados needs an extra 20 to OHKO a Beedrill. Another thing that makes the match harder for Gyarados is that its bench is so weak. All Beedrill has to do to get a free prize (if they can't OHKO the Gyarados) is just use a Warp Point. Wheras if Gyarados were to use one or a Cyclone Energy, they still need to do an exra 20 to OHKO that other Beedrill that they sent up. Another thing is that Gyarados uses a starter and Beedrill doesn't. This means that Gyarados is giving a free prize card; it's very easy to setup at least two Beedrill before Gyarados gets setup and Sableye out of there.

And what is stopping Gyarados from using cards to pick off Beedrills bench as well? They both recover equally fast, so yeah...

If you had read what I just said.

Wheras if Gyarados were to use one [Warp Point] or a Cyclone Energy, they still need to do an exra 20 to OHKO that other Beedrill that they sent up.
