Help with cards and sleeves (what to buy)

1.) I just created a custom deck (on paper) and I need to know what is the best way of getting these cards. Should I buy the cards individually or try my luck with booster packs? I'd rather not spin my wheels and just get the cards I need.

2.) How do I find out which cards come in which booster packs?

3.) Which websites are the best to purchase cards, playmats, and sleeves from. I've found Collectors Cache and Troll and Toad. Any others? (sorry if it's against the rules to ask this question... I am unaware.)

Thanks.

RE: Halp Meh

Troll and Toad, ebay, and professor-oak.com are great places to get cards. If you can PM me the list of the cards in the deck, and what they do, I can tell you what set they are from.

RE: Halp Meh

You would have to get a ruling from a judge at one of your local tournaments about sleeves. I'm not entirely sure on what's safe to use and what isn't.

RE: Halp Meh

ThirdEye: I use the Players Choice for my YGO deck (which lasted me 2 years before they started to peel).
I don't know anything about KMC, but if you want quality, go for Dragonsheild (which have lasted me going on 11 years, & they've lastest me 5 different card games).

RE: Halp Meh

TrollandToad is a great place for buying individual cards. I am working on my master sets of every set from MD up to current. In my Triumphant Set for example, I am only missing 2 rares from the set. That being said, it is foolish to get a whole box when I only need 2 cards. Sure I need a few more of the Primes, but I doubt I will get the remaining ones I actually need. lol

And for deck building in general, its generally better to hand pick the cards you need rather then hope to get them in packs.

As for what set each card comes in, look at this;

This card just like all others, has a set symbol printed on it. A set symbol informs you of the set it belongs to.
The set symbol is located in the bottom right hand corner. In this case its that upside down pyramid shape.
After you get involved with looking around for cards and what not, you'll soon learn to tell right away what each set symbol is. For this one its Supreme Victors.

^I also recommend him (he's also known as: BrianJapan-you can find a link to their site in the Promo Card's thread).
It's thanks to him (via Mew Jadestr), I got the Leafia & Glacia Poké Dolls (plushies).

RE: Halp Meh

The rule of sleeves for tournaments is that you must have blank sleeves. They can have no designs, prints, or patterns on the backing. But they can be colored like blue or purple or whatever, but they must be the same. The ONLY sleeves you can use that has a design on the back is the official Pokemon sleeves you get at Pre-Releases.

RE: Halp Meh

@PikachewTofu: I don't think that's quite accurate. I don't know for your area, but in my area, you're allowed to use sleeves with designs on the back, as long as the outside border of the sleeve is all the same color.

RE: Halp Meh

In my area, they don't let us have designs on the back of our sleeves, unless they are the sleeves from pre-releases. They say that the designs on sleeves could be "distracting" or "inappropriate" smh

RE: Halp Meh

Must be different depending on the judge/area then. I would check with your TO ThirdEye, if you want to use any sleeves with designs on them.

RE: Halp Meh

The reason we can't use them here is because once a long time ago, somone had custom sleeves and the pattern was slightly different on each card, so he knew what every card was in his deck just by looking at the backing. Even on the Pokemon.com they say in the rules you cannot have designs unless they are Pokemon Pre-Release sleeves. Some tournament organizers let it slide as long as they are appropriate and are identical to one another.

RE: Halp Meh

I used the JPN Charizard sleeves at my last cities and everything was fine and the TO did not care at all.

RE: Halp Meh

I also thought they had to be a solid color for everywhere, at least in the US. Guess not.
I've found buying individual cards is best and saves a lot of money. Unless all the cards you need are from the same set, just buy them from somewhere online. I like Troll and Toad a lot, but eBay can also be pretty cheap. Collector's Cache is a good site, too.

RE: Halp Meh

@The Power of Three, others:

Officially only POKEMON sleeves with designs (including pre-release And Japanese exclusive sleeves like charizard, japanese shaymin sleeves, etc)

I don't know why your TO allows Any sleeves, but that is seriously breaking the rules.

RE: Halp Meh

Oh, and your deck box must be appropriate too. My friend bought a deck box with a half-naked woman on it and the TO made him put it away and get another deck box.

On the topic of buying cards, check troll and toad first, then ebay. Their prices are better for most cards, but you can always find some great deals on ebay too.

I use Dragon Shield and I really love them. They never wear out, and while the white ones get a little dirty, that's just what I get for getting white. They have lots of nice colors and they shuffle easily.
