Since we have a Track thread, and a basketball thread. Figured I'd throw a Martial Arts thread out there. So, are any of you people out there in any kind of Martial Arts? I have a second-degree black belt in Karate. If I remember correctly, back when Pandamore was a member here, she also got a second-degree black belt. So how about you guys? Any martial artists out there? Just curious. Discuss all that stuff here.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I have a first-degree Black Belt in Hapkido, however our studio closed down due to financial problems. Really sad, because I have been there for a bit over 10 years.

Me and my dad have just gotten into Muay Thai and Jujitsu, each twice a week. I have had a lot of fun after 2 classes of each, but Jujitsu is definitely my favorite of the two. Muay Thai is extremely aggressive and I'm not used to it, because Hapkido was not as aggressive. Jujitsu and Hapkido have a lot of similar aspects so it was easy for me to get started.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

What exactly is Hapkido? That's not one I've heard of before. Is the style different than the other kinds of martial arts?

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Currently gold belt in karate. its turning out to be really fun.

It's really not aggressive, your purpose is not to knock the person out. It's based around arm bars, kicks, and locks. It's mostly on your feet, however there are some techniques that work a lot like jujitsu on the ground. The main point is to really not cause them physical damage. There are lots of techniques that if you go far enough with the lock you can break their arm, wrist, or neck but the whole point of it is avoiding a bloody fight. It has a lot of elements of Aikido, Jujitsu, King Fu, and Tae Kwan Doe. Don't think of it as a weak martial arts just because it's not all out power. It can be very lethal. It has aspects of Judo too because there are lots of hip throws and sweeps to the ground.

I have a 2nd degree black belt in TaeKwonDoe, over 30 gold medals from random tournaments, and two Junior Olympic appearances (three gold medals).

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I've had my first degree black belt for four years now in karate. I've taken a break this year, though (and maybe next year too), since my parents want both me and my brother to go into the same class together to save money, but my brother's been too busy with schoolwork to go.

But yeah, it's really fun. Nice knowing that karate isn't all about physical strength (although needed), since I'm not strong at all =P

That's similar to our ground work. We to a lot of locks and such, we work more to control the opponent rather than beat the heck out of them.

Limitless, why do you have to be so good at everything? :p That's pretty cool. Junior Olympic appearences and 3 gold medals. That's a lot.

EDIT: I forgot to ask, do any of you work with weapons in your various martial arts classes? If so, do you guys ever do weapons sparring? We do a little bit, but not a ton.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I've worked with fake swords, hanbows, and the little 2ft bows before (I forget what they're called). We also spar in my karate school, but black belt doesn't do it much.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

No sparring with weapons but we do have knife/gun self defense.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

^We've done a little of gun and knife defense.

@Gliscor: We work with fake swords and the bo staff (like you), and the escrimas (is that what you call the little 2 foot bows? You get 2 of them, and they're both really short swords.), but we only use Swords to spar with.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I'm a 1st Gup(red belt two stripes; one more til Dan(black)) in Soo Bak Do(Korean). Strangely, it translates to Hand Strike Way, while the art is supposedly known for it's kicking techniques.(Chuck Norris's first black belt was in an art that had the same founder as Soo Bak Do. Is the Roundhouse a coincidence? I think not.)

We occaionally do self-defense with knives, staffs, and clubs. Even more rarely, we use swords(the instructers call them 'lightsabers,' but sword is less cheesey) to spar. They're all fake, of course, except maybe the staff, I'm not sure what an actual staff looks like.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I'm a Yellow belt in Shotokan Karate, soon to be Orange. I know some of the Katas above my level, like Han Nidan and some of Han Sandan. I forgot what to do after the 3rd inside block. I thought it was Spear Hand-Lunge punch.

This is non-contact btw.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Oh yes, I also forgot to mention my dad is a black belt in Tae Kwan Doe. But he quit a long time ago.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I have taken 5 types of the arts, and did you know that they were never supposed to be sport? It became world-wide though!

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I got my black belt the day hgss came out. However, I quit a little later because the people at my studio were... nevermind

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I have a black belt in tae kwon do, andI I'm half way there to 2nd degree. As for the weapons stuff, first degrees get to use plastic knives in self defense practice .
Second degrees get to use wooden swords, haven't seen them spar with it though just form and stuff.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Orange Belt test this Friday. Can't wait :X

My sensei told me to work on bigger stances, which sucks, because when I got my Yellow Belt they were too big. I can never meet in the middle :/

I should make it. That's probably the only thing I need to work on for my level.
