there is a HUGE lightning storm going on in my neighborhood!!!!!

Also, let's try to use this thread to discuss storms you've had to endure, or your opinion on lightning. Try to keep the posts at a decent length, and make sure there's enough to them so that they don't get reported for being spammy. ~Xous

I guess this thread is to be used for the discussion of lightning...? (Like storms people have had to endure, or how lightning may have affected one's life?) If this doesn't generate a lot of non-spammy discussion, I'll lock this, so keep that in mind if you want this open.

We had a whole bunch of severe Tunder Storms here. Tornados too. We have a dog and she freaks out whenever she hears thunder.

God, dude, you are like my idol for that. Anyway, well, I guess stay indoors (or if you're paranoid, stay in a car), don't take showers, or use outlets, all that jazz. Safety first! How long is it supposed to last? Or is it already over?

Lightning pretty like a flower but sting like a bee. Oh! pretty pretty from a distance but touchy touchy might make you die and stuff, so like stay in a car or in the house if it be above your head. Wouldn't want to get struck and junk, I hear it hurts a little bit. Keep away from the water.

Exercise that common sense thingy and you should be Ohkae.

Seeing as I live in Kansas, (famous for our tornadoes) this is my kind of subject.

Anyway, about 2 years ago we had a really nasty thunderstorm that produced a tornado. It tore a town just miles down the road into pieces. (and it's still in the recovery process) The tornado did happen to end just about 5 miles west of where I live, so we a close call. We may have missed a tornado, but the storm was still pretty intense. As one could imagine, I was in my basement, so I can't really report on the lightning. :/ There was a lot of other bad storms that year, too.

I have seen some pretty cool lightning just going down the highway during through thunderstorms. (they are really common during May and June, so it's not hard to encounter one at some point) Seeing all the lightning and hearing all the thunder is both thrilling and fun at the same time, imo. After going through all-too-many thunderstorms, I enjoy watching the lightning rather than being afraid of it.

Lightning safety tips? Just stay inside or in a car. Under a porch or shelter works, too.

My power sometimes goes out during lightning storms so I don't have to worry about outlets so much. ;s

Being able to watch lightning is just one of the many perks that come with living in this great state.

There isn't much to say, except you should probably observe caution even when viewing from inside your house. Obviously, it's best to unplug your electrical appliances and avoid using water. Keep away from windows too.

If you're outside, view the lightning from a safe distance and try not to be out in the middle of nowhere with only some trees because that increases your chances of getting struck. You clearly don't want to get wet either. Finally, to avoid even having to worry about that, if you can see lightning, it's close enough to strike you. Oh, and being in a vehicle is fine during a storm, but be careful of what you touch just as a safety precaution.

So those are a few safety tips. I don't really follow these myself; I like to try to get as close as possible to watching it without killing myself. But yeah.

Storms don't happen all the time in the valley, but one time we had a monsoon, and I swear that it was light outside the whole night (From Lightning).

I was thinking more along the lines of Raikou.... *CoughShinningRaikouCough* (LOL)

Living up in WA state, there is usually never any extreme weather. Its quite boring actually. But we do get lots of rain....
Anyways, I remember a while back, (like a year ago) we had a huge thunder storm.
It was really bad for us because the thunder head, or center of the storm was directly over our back yard. Every clap of thunder was SUPER loud. The lightning flashes lit the rooms like a strobe light.
Im telling you. The thunder seemed to shake the house almost. lol
Power remained on for us, but it wasnt fun. Lots of rain at the time too.
And worst of all, my dog freaks out from thunder. He goes insane and acts like he needs to poop. lol
My dog is a full grown Yellow Lab and he tries to climb into my lap. lol

Thunder Storms are kinda cool in some ways, but in that case, it wasnt.

LIGHTNING FIRE LIGHTNING FIR LIGHTNING FIR LIGHTNING! bum bah bum.

go dress up! pass the tiiiiiime.

my opinion on lightning:
its hard to take pictures of.
*^ this is now not spam, as it is on the topic, and relating to something I did today. (trying to take pictures of lightning)

LORDY JONES

I flew over a thunderstorm one time. Spectacular. One time, I was at the house. Lightning hit next street, and the power went out!

It kinda quieted down at about 11:00.
It was really chaotic at about 8:00 or 9:00.

As much bad weather as you have, Florida is worst.

I live in Florida, Miami, Florida to be exact. There are Many hurricanes there. But since its summer, the sun has been shining.

Surprisingly, it's been a while since my area has actually seen some really, really bad storms (that is, if you don't count the ones that came rolling through last Tuesday night...which were quite strong). The worst part of thunderstorms to me isn't so much the lightning as opposed to wind and the potential for tornadoes. I actually think that lightning itself is kind of cool...dangerous, but cool. I only recall two times in which I actually saw lightning strikes first-hand: the first when a tree was struck outside of my parent's place and made a branch fall in the front yard just feet from my dad's work-van, and the second near one of my cousin's homes in Illinois that ended up causing a small brush-fire.

Yeah, there are certainly worse places than Kansas. I have been to Florida once, and I believe those statistics. Where I was at, usually a thunderstorm would come out of the blue during the late afternoon. ;/ Texas can be pretty bad, too.

Kansas is still pretty high up when it comes to severe weather, though. ;[
