Chapter 1: A New Region & New Friends
Sinnoh. Looking out over the region from the window of Team Rocket's private jet, it looked cold and mountainous, a far cry from the fashionable cities of Kalos. I shivered in my seat and took another sip of my tea, as if I could already feel the cold seeping in through the plane. Though, in reality, the shivering was more likely because of nerves than any mysterious cold.
Before I'd started my first travels as a Pokémon Trainer in Kalos, I didn't even know if I'd be able to succeed. 8 badges and a League Championship later, I was much more confident in my abilities, but I felt anxious nonetheless. Even though I had more confidence regarding Pokémon training, playing another role was taxing to say the least. I'd also have the additional complications of being forced to pretend that I was a new trainer, learning how to catch Pokémon, battle weaklings, pretending to be oh, so interested when some youngster in shorts decides to tell me how potions and Pokéballs work.
There was another complication, too, one I was reminded of by the newspaper sitting in front of me. Splashed on the front page was a huge photo of me from the celebratory event in Lumiose City with the headline "Kalos Champion Disappears! Foul Play or Foul Player?" After defeating Team Flare and winning the League, I'd become something of a celebrity in Kalos and they didn't seem to be taking kindly to my disappearance, digging into my "past" and finding the cheaply-setup cover stories that Team Rocket had put in place to cover my tracks. No one had yet figured out where I went and who I really am, but the speculation was wild and reporters and investigators were traveling in search of me, so I'd have to be extra careful to keep my identity hidden.
The one bright side was that I would be seeing James again. Although he'd joined me in Kalos, he seemed to take the entire mission as a joke, and spent more time playing dress-up and hanging around with the other loser twerps, making me do all of the work. I couldn't help but wonder how his meeting with Giovanni went, and how he'd be doing this time. Though it would be good to see him again no matter what.
The plane landed at a small airport on the western outskirts of Sinnoh and I was driven to the small town of Twinleaf where I'd be starting my journey. James and Cassidy would be there waiting for me, cover already in place. I prepared my appearance in the airport before we left, dressing warmly in a thick red dress with pink boots, a white scarf, and a matching hat. My hair had already been dyed to a deep, slate grey and restyled in a half ponytail that was partially hidden by the hat. I looked pretty fabulous, if I do say so, but I would miss the boutiques of Kalos.
Not wanting to face Cassidy's wrath quite yet, I snuck up the stairs of my home and plopped down onto the bed, wondering how long I'd have to be living here before I'd be able to leave. I turned on the TV and started flipping through channels, but suddenly the door to my room flew open and James ran in.
I would have recognized my long-term partner anywhere, but he really went all out in his costuming this time. His hair was bleached blond and styled up in strange, horn-like curves and he was dressed warmly in jeans, a woolen orange and white sweater, and a long green scarf. "There you are!" He smiled. "I've been here for a week or so already, but Giovanni assured me you'd be coming soon."
I let out a sigh of relief at seeing him and pulled him in for a hug. "It's so good to see you again."
"Same, I've missed you." He pulled back from the hug and gestured at the TV. "I see you've seen Professor DNA. He's the head professor in this region and the one we'll be getting our Pokémon from before we leave. I've learned a bit about him since I've come here. He's based out of Sandgem now, but until recently he was studying abroad in Kanto with our old friend Professor Oak. Kind of a stern guy, really, but with a weird sense of humour."
I gave James and inquisitive look. "My, you've turned rather serious since I saw you last."
James grinned sheepishly and ran a hand through his hair. "The Boss kind of chewed me out after how useless I was in the last mission. I don't plan on letting you do all the work this time, Jess. Anyway, we should get started. This town's already bored the crap out of me. I understand picking a small town for us to live in so that our sudden move-in doesn't stand out, but geez, there's nothing to do here. I can't wait to train some Pokémon!" Without waiting for a reply, he left my room, flying down the stairs as fast as he barged in. I chuckled at his enthusiasm and followed after him.
Cassidy was sitting downstairs on the couch, munching on some popcorn and staring at the TV. She rolled her eyes when she saw me come down. "Don't even talk to me. I am so over babysitting for you on these stupid missions. Just go follow James and do whatever the hell you need to do and leave me out of it."
I shrugged and ignored her, heading out of the house and into my new hometown. It was small, with a patch of water to the south and small snowdrifts everywhere. According to my notes, the house kitty-corner to mine was where James was supposed to live, so I went to see if he was there when he suddenly opened the door and bumped into me as he was coming out, seemingly in a rush to get going. I popped into his house just long enough to snicker at Butch who had gotten James's parenting duty then followed the path where James headed, leaving the town to the north.
We had met back up and were just about to head towards Sandgem when Professor DNA himself appeared, scolding us for going into the tall grass without having any Pokémon. How else did he expect us to be able to find him? I was about to ask him, but looked over and saw him muttering to himself. My last professor was a furry, was this one going to be a nutjob? I looked over at James worryingly.
"You two really love Pokémon, don't you?" The Professor asked us both as he came out of his mumbled reverie. We both nodded, which only prompted him to ask us again. Yeah, Professor DNA surely was a few slices short of a loaf, poor old guy.
James, however, didn't seem to notice or care. "You can ask a hundred times!" he shouted. "The answer will never change! We'll both answer a hundred time, we love Pokémon!"
"To be honest, it kind of worries me what people like you would do with Pokémon."
To be honest, it kind of worries me what an old, senile guy like you would do with Pokémon... I bit back my retort. I had to be a good little girl.
James took the rebuke more seriously, "Well, I, uh... if you won't give one to me, then give one to Jessie!"
"What?" I sputtered, giving James a weird look. He was just talking about how he wasn't going to pin all the work on me this time!
Professor DNA seemed to feel it was a good answer, though, showcasing James's spirit. "Very well, then! I will entrust you two with Pokémon!" I breathed a sigh of relief. "However! You must promise me that you never recklessly endanger yourselves again."
He then furrowed his brow and starting fumbling around in his pockets muttering to himself again. Wow, this guy really was something else. He offered to give us Pokémon... but then he lost them.
"Professor!"
I looked up at the kid running down the path and had to stifle a curse. No way. It couldn't be.
Ash Ketchum was running towards us lugging a huge briefcase. Somehow, the twerp had managed to follow me here from Kalos.
"Professor DNA!" Ash stopped for breath when he finally reached it, doubling over with exertion. "You left your briefcase behind at the lake." I somehow wasn't surprised. The old man would probably forget to put on pants if it weren't for the chilly wind between his legs.
"Ah, there it is!" The Professor chuckled. "Nice work, Ash. I was just about to entrust these two with their own Pokémon."
"Wha?!" Ash replied and I sucked in a breath, turning the other way. Did he recognize me? But I needn't have fear. "These Pokémon are crucial," the twerp protested, "and you're just going to give them away?"
"You see, my boy...." Professor DNA said, a twinkle in his eye, "there comes a time when people should meet Pokémon..." He smiled then looked over at us. "Go on! Open the briefcase and choose a Pokémon!"
"I can't believe it!" James shouted, cheering. "I'm so happy now that I can't keep a straight face!"
James let me go first, so I walked closer to the professor, trying to keep my face hidden from Ash, and peered into the briefcase to select a Pokéball. There were three Pokémon available... a monkey that was on fire, a green dinosaur thing with a leaf growing out of it's head... and the cutest, more adorable little blue penguin that I'd ever seen! I quickly snatched up the penguin's Pokéball, holding it tight to my chest. James picked the dino thing.
"Very fine choices!" DNA boomed. "If you have any troubles, come see me at my lab in Sandgem. Follow me lad!" And without another word he walked off through the grass, Ash lugging the briefcase as he followed along behind him.
"Heh, what do you know. The old coot was quite a bit nicer than I thought he'd be."
"And a bit more forgetful, too," I added. "Perhaps he didn't take his medication this morning."
James smirked. "So, what do you think... would you be up for our first battle?"
I shrugged. "Sure, may as well get a feel for our new Pokémon. It's on!"
I started out attacking, using the only offensive move my new Piplup seemed to have: Pound. James took a different route, repeatedly having his Pokémon, which was apparently called Turtwig, up its own defenses. Unfortunately for him, his strategy only delayed the inevitable. My attacks were doing less and less damage, but they were still hurting, and by the time James went on the offensive, it was too late.
"Wow, quite a battle!" James exclaimed as he withdrew his knocked-out Turtwig. "I can see how you managed to become a Champion, beating me handily even with a new, weak Pokémon. We should probably head back home and rest up before we head out."
I didn't feel like seeing Cassidy again, but I wanted a break, too, so I agreed, and we both turned around to head back to our homes. She ignored me the entire time, munching on her popcorn and watching her soap operas, but I rested up and grabbed some food from the fridge to make a snack. Soon I'd be on the road and starting my journey.
