2 Double Colorless Energy
Strategy: The basic premise of this deck is simple; setup Mega Gyardos ASAP and sweep their team. My main priorities is to setup my field to include a Gyardos EX and a Manaphy EX. From there, I can freely switch from either relying on Gyrados EX to attach energy, or have Palkia Ex and Max Elixers attach energy to Gyrados EX on my bench. 4 Dive balls and a Pokemon Fan Club allow me to reliably draw my setup into Mega Gyrados, with Trainers Mail to help me get there.
Once I have Mega Gyrados, there's very few pokemon it can't OHKO with 4-5 energy. I use multiple Lysandres to keep the bench dry of energy, and sweep. Escape rope can also serve this function, with the free retreat from Manaphy I can simply retreat back into my Gyrados as long as my bench pokemon has an energy.
Pokemon Ranger and Hex Manic is to help against EX immune pokemon (Carbink, Regice, etc), in addition to my 3 Lysandre I can usually manage to not get locked out.
Skyla allows me to draw any one piece I am missing; Dive ball allows me to get the above pokemon, or I can search for a spirit link, or I find a professor's letter if I need energy, or an anti-lock supporter if I'm having trouble with a Garbodor or Trevanent.
12 Basic Water and 2 Double colorless is a ton of energy cards, but I feel like I need this many. With 12 basic cards, assuming I drew 0-1 basic water with my first hand, it gives me a 81.78% to 77.8% chance respectively of a Max elixir succeeding on my first turn, where 8 basic waters only give 65.3% to 59.9% chance respectively. It also allows to freely search and attach energies from Palkia and Gyardos without using fisherman or energy retrievals, while setting up a backup Gyardos or Palkia or Regice in case things go haywire.
Double Colorless serves two main functions: Allow Regice to spam Resistance Blizzard or accelerate Mega Gyardos at the cost of damage. Conditionally useful in faster match ups, I think it's worth putting in 2 copies.
Bad Match Ups:
M Mewtwo/Lugia EX - These types of cards add more damage for every energy attached to both pokemon. Since I want to attach 4+ energy to my pokemon, these types can do a lot of damage for not a lot of energy (Both only require a double colorless, M Mewtwo can be reduced to 1 with a dimensional valley). That's a lot of energy investment for my pokemon, even a 2 for 1 trade can end badly if I'm not prepared with my 2nd Gyardos.
M Manectric - Another low cost high damage MU, it's very difficult to keep up with their damage when their costs are so low. If I don't maintain momentum for the entire MU, I will lose most of the time.
Favorable Match Ups:
Fire decks - Pretty self explanatory, most of the time I don't even need to Mega evolve Gyardos, Gyrados EX can sweep just fine.
Trevanent break- This deck sets up fast enough and hits hard enough where I can sweep them once I mega evolve. It's highly unlikely that they can rack up 240 damage before I fully setup, and roaring seas totally negates Trevanent break.
Other Water MUs - I generally win these MUs, again this deck can generally OHKO just about every pokemon, and with Mega Gyrados having a whopping 240 hp it's difficult to be OHKOed back. With free retreat from Manaphy I can rotate pokemon to heal which makes roaring seas more value in with this deck compared to theirs.
Any input would be much appreciated, thanks for reviewing my deck.
