RE: Minecraft

I've been criticized for this on many forums already, but I think Minecraft overall is not a good game.
I'll go in depth about the modes it offers (maybe there's more I don't know about, doesn't really matter for my point)

Survival:
Calling Minecraft a survival game is wrong. There's hardly any challenge. It's not hard. Actually, I've never even seen someone die because a monster. Usually people get lost, fall in lava, or do something else that will lead to a tragic accident. But calling this game a survival game is very far off and disgraces the survival genre. It's not remotely scary, either. The most scary thing about the game is the terrible graphics, which some people call charming. That's alright, can't really argue with that, but it would be way scarier if it was a bit more realistic and if the AI wasn't so stupid.

Casual/creation:
The game also advertises itself because the creation mode (or peaceful mode) and its endless possibilites to build, build, build. It's like a very huge Legoes box.
I loved Legoes when I was young, and this game is nothing like it. The building process is slow and tedious (even something simple like making a bridge takes way longer than it should be) and because the building blocks are so clunky, you have to waste a LOT of time to make something with a nice amount of precision. I think all this time would've been better spent in a real 2D/3D graphing program. Heck, who am I kidding. Even Microsoft freaking Paint looks better than Minecraft.

Survival multiplayer:
This is the only mode that can save this game, and I kinda get why people play this mode. Watching each other get brutally murdered by a derpy skeleton is fun and always will be fun. But there's so many better options out there. For the same price as Minecraft, you could have bought Left 4 Dead or Killing Floor, two excellent multiplayer survival horror games with good graphics, good AI and actually innovative, original, not tedious gameplay.

RE: Minecraft

I haven't downloaded it yet, but it seems like a game.
I might have to download it and click on it and play some.

RE: Minecraft

C/Ped from the forum.

New Stuff said:
- Biomes are MUCH larger and uniform than before

-Swamp biome was added to the list of existing biomes - look for vines on trees!

- Vines
Can be collected with shears, in the manner of leaf blocks. Vines will grow on any surface they are placed on

- Beef and Chicken added

- Strongholds - spawn once per world

- Ruins (basically strongholds on the ground)

- Giant mushrooms (Do not generate yet)

- Silverfish

- Creative mode
Allows flying, insta-break, unlimited items from an item palette, no damage, and more

- Abandoned mine shafts

- Endermen
Normally passive, these night-spawning mobs will teleport to (and attack) you if you look directly at them. When defeated, they can drop Ender Pearls, which presently do nothing

- Bow charging
Variable damage with charge, can also land critical hits. Additionally, attacks can crit if you hit a player or mob when descending from a jump

- Sprinting
Run faster, knock mobs back that are hit during a sprint - appears to deplete the hunger bar faster

- New high-quality Main Menu

- Chest animation (lids open, close)

- Player list on SMP; Server listings

- Setting gamemode on SMP "/gamemode username 0/1", 1 being Creative and 0 being Survival

- Hunger
Depletes slowly over time, can be filled by eating food. At 9 more more bars, you will regenerate health slowly.

- Eating animation

- Arrows stick to mobs

- Xp bar (Gain xp from killing mobs and other players)

- New lighting engine (Colored lights, smoother lighting)

- Clouds are now at the ceiling of the world

- Cave spiders

- Zombies drop rotten flesh, which can be consumed

These can be crafted at a crafting table by making a 3x2 grid of Glass Blocks - makes 16 panes. These panes can be placed in lines, corners and crosses, and they will adjoin with the nearest adjacent block.

- Iron Bars
Created by making a 3x2 grid of iron ingots at a crafting table. Can be placed in the same manner as glass panes

- Brick, Stone Brick stairs

- Smooth stone brick
Can be crafted by placing Stone in a 2x2 grid, makes 4 Stone Bricks

- F6 & F7 Adjust the time of day when pressed/held

If you are confused on how to get 1.8 to work, download the link I previously posted.

(window's tutorial)
1. hit the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen
2. search "Run" and open
3. type in "%appdata%" (without the quotation marks)
4. go to folder ".minecraft" and open
5. open the "bin" folder
6. open Minecraft (game) and launch it (so it goes to the main menu where you select single player/multi player/etc.)
7. go back to the "bin" folder and delete the minecraft.jar folder
8. access the previously downloaded file, and move it into the "bin" folder
9. go back to Minecraft and hit single player, the screen should go black and the game should close
10. open and launch Minecraft again
11. ?
12. profit

RE: Minecraft

If anyone already downloaded the 1.8 pre-release, there is a new one that Jeb released earlier today. 1.8 pre-release 2.

Same way to download as last time. Let me know if the link doesn't work. I just c/p'd it from the forum.

RE: Minecraft

Is there a reasonable amount of updates in this one? I don't feel like downloading more unless it's needed...

RE: Minecraft

1.8 PR2 nothing new was added. It's just a few bug fixes. The real 1.8 should be released by the end of this week with almost every bug and glitch fixed.

RE: Minecraft

Hey, The official 1.8 release is out now. The client should ask you if you want to update whenever you log in. :)

RE: Minecraft

Yeah, me nether. I've seen videos, and they are epic.

Before (during Pre-release 1) only 1 stronghold would spawn per world. Now Jeb changed it to 3, so they are a little more common. :)
