Need Help With Deck Building

I'm in need of some help with the card game! I hope so done can help me. So a few months back my girlfriend and I got back Into the card game. I bought my girlfriend the plasma freeze Theme deck who's main Pokemon in Glacion. But the Pokemon she usually always beats me with is a Vanelluxe with an attack called Chillmax that costs one water energy and the move does 60 damage times the number of heads for each energy attached to the card. On top of that the Glacion's ability allows the player to have no retreat cost on any Pokemon while that card is in play. So the thing is I need to try and find a way to beat her without using a theme deck because I'm interested in building a well rounded deck on my own. The deck I have running right now is a Water/fighting deck with Wallrien and Golem as my two main Pokemon. But I can get some pointers or if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

RE: Desperately need some help!

If she's winning by lots of energy on Vanilluxe, you can get an advantage by using a pokemon suck as Leafeon (Plasma Storm) (which is in the corresponding theme deck to Glaceon) that has an attack which does more damage for each energy on that Pokemon. Another option might be Tropius (Plasma Blast).

Alternatively, you could take advantage of the weakness of Vanilluxe and Glaceon by including a Metal type Pokemon. Cobalion from Legendary Treasures actually fills this role quite well, having both of the above tools. However it requires metal energy to use it's attack, which might make your deck a little too inconsistent.

If you and your girlfriend want to get into the more competitive (and in my opinion, more fun/skill-based) side of the card game, you can start looking at competitive decklists (which you can find a lot of here) to see how they are built, as well as some YouTube videos of players who really know what they're doing (I highly recommend the channel TheTopCut due to it's variety and frequent uploads).

Have fun!

The first step should be to consider ditching Walrein and Golem. Golem needs to evolve twice, is slow, and hurts himself a lot which does all her work for her. Walrein also needs to evolve twice, is slow, and does sub-par damage after taking a single hit. If you really like them and want to keep them, find space for some Miltank - they swing for 80 off a single energy (if you have a Stage 2 like those guys them on the bench). But the more a mon needs to evolve, the harder it has to work to justify being included in the deck.

Have you checked out the new Furious Fist decks? Dark Hammer is really really good compared to other theme decks. You'll want to customize it yourself of course but it should be able to mop up Vanilluxe without too much trouble.

Try picking up Dark Hammer and maybe turning it into a fighting/something or even just a pure fighting deck. Get rid of Lickitung and Lickylicky and replace them with other better mons. I'm fond of Legendary Treasures Stunfisk and XY Dugtrio (watch out for that bench damage though) but if you can't get them easily there's still loads of fight mons available in Fists. The new Supporter Korrina rocks and Machamp is a beast.

Other considerations (both included with Dark Hammer): Hariyama, Mienshao

RE: Desperately need some help!

Auride: thanks for advice! I think I might look into that deck. Also I'm not a huge fan of the metal type just mostly because the energies are harder to find and are more expensive, generally. But yeah we love to go against each other but she is really good at making strategies really fast

Spiffo: to be honest I kinda like the golem I'm using. It has a move called explosion that does 150 damage and does 100 damage to itself. BUT I have stocked up on protection cubes that prevents damaging itself. So that's really useful. As for Walrein I'm thinking about getting rid of it.

I'm now thinking about making it strictly a fighting deck or fighting/grass deck

If you're looking for various specific types of energies, but you don't need many of them (which you don't if you're only running a few copies of a card), you should consider picking up an Elite Trainer Box. They are these stylized boxes that are released with every other set (the latest being Furious Fists) which come with 5 energy of every type (except dragon, obviously), as well as stylized sleeves, dice (for coin flips and damage counters), condition markers, dividers, the box itself (good for storage), and booster packs. These are great for getting into the game, since they provide you with so much useful miscellaneous items.

RE: Desperately need some help!

I've had a few friends recommend that to me. I looked into it's between $40-$50 and I feel like if I needn't to collect energies then I should probably just buy them online or at a local card shop. There's a card shop where I live called Freshers that sell the common energies for 10 cents each and then the less common ones for 50 cents.

I'm familiar with Golem, but he still needs four energy to get swinging, AND he needs to evolve twice, AND he needs the protect cube to do his job. If you're set on Golem, then definitely run a bunch of Korrina and Miltank cards. Korrina can grab your brown mons and an item, making your job way way easier. Get your Stage 2 up and let Miltank do the work.

Other good supporters to run include Professor Sycamore (throw away the cards you can't play and grab 7 new ones) and Lysandre (which will let you force her Ice Cream Cones into play and KO them before they're ready)

These are fantastic. They come with 7 or 8 booster packs too, so the box is basically the cost of the boosters with the various energies thrown in for free.

RE: Desperately need some help!

Yeah I've been using some cards that let me search for Pokemon and energies, an I'm also using a Lysandre as well. But Ill make sure I look for a Korrina card, I could use that. I'm also going to try using those Miltanks, I have some of those

That makes sense though, I think I may look into those boxes a little more actually
