'New Nintendo 3DS' Models Announced [8/29]

The browser is definitely getting an upgrade. The Direct showed browsing with both sticks, some button shortcut with ZR, and HTML5 video playback. Neat stuff.

Well that is good news indeed.

Pie-in-the-sky hope is that XY are updated to take advantage of this new hardware, getting rid of all the crazy lag and maybe enabling overworld 3D. The timframes line up so that ORAS could launch with support, but I guarantee Z will have support.

I doubt they'll go back and patch in New 3DS stuff to XY. They might add some optional extras to Z, though. I'm also thinking they might make 7th gen New 3DS exclusive.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but its screen brightness will dim automatically according to the brightness of your environment. I mostly play at night and have wanted a feature like this on Nintendo handhelds FOREVER.

It's also great that web browsing will be faster (ever try using Miiverse on a 3DS? It's really clunky), and that you can access the SD card contents wirelessly, without having to take it out.

I still haven't upgraded from the original 3ds... I'm torn on whether I'll get this one. I like the features but are any of them really necessary for the mostly pokemon games and puzzle games I play, or even Smash Bros? And how much longer does the 3DS have as a platform before Nintendo announces the next generation of handhelds? There was like a year between the DSi XL and the 3DS, but maybe this is more of an analogue to the first DSi.

I'll have to see if any good games are exclusives or if Amiibo content ends up being really compelling. It's just tough that they still haven't released something as cool-looking as my metallic midnight purple 3ds, or the transparent 3dsXL that didn't go on sale anywhere:

If they release a new3DS that looks like THAT, I'll buy it day one

Can someone tell me if the new 3ds xl has swappable covers? I know that the regular sized one does.

It doesn't look like it. :(

Ohhh, that's what that part in the Direct was about? Cool! I was wondering what the thing next to the front-facing camera was.

It's actually almost necessary at this point, now that you have to take off the bottom cover to access the thing. :S

Z is a definite thing? Or are you just throwing that out there?

These new 3DSes aren't what the 3DS is to the DS, correct? It's just an upgrade, like what the 3DS XL was to the 3DS? I can hold off on buying one, if so... I might not even bother. I'll just wait for the true successor to the 3DS, which will most likely have all of these features and more.

They're lovely, very retro.

And the increased RAM was a necessity, XY was already pushing it to the edge, and I have a strong suspicion that was the reason why they took the environmental 3D out of the final version, so any pokemon games for this new console will most likely bring full environmental 3D.

Yeah I didn't like having to turn off the 3D whenever I sent out a bird or something to keep the FPS up.

I'd have to say my favorite feature about this is the interchangeable covers. Although I don't know if I'd actually use it because I always end up covering my DS with booster pack arts.

These are compatible with regular 3DS games, right?
I might get it if they give a really high trade-in value for 3DSXL->N3DSXL.
Plus, the C-stick and triggers are a really nice addition.

I feel like Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot again, from the name to the different hardware to the "second circle pad" (heh). We'll see though. I'll buy it for the colored buttons and non-shit 3D if for no other reason.

So if this is region-locked does that mean it can't play ANY games in English, like XY or FE:A? Not even from the west just any way to possibly play games in English because I really wanna get the New 3DS XL.

It's region locked so you can't play any games from any other region if it's the Japanese version.

I could see Pokemon benefiting in a few ways. For one, the games can run at a higher speed, maybe we'll even get a game that fully utilizes the stereoscopic 3D this time. Also, the second Circle Pad means we can finally get a controllable camera, something that I think we need for certain areas of the game (I know I'd love to have a controllable camera in Lumiose City and Azure Bay).

Usually when they come out with an upgrade like this, they expect it to last at least 2 years. With a good enough library, maybe it could even reach 3. So I expect the next gen handheld to come out around 2018.

Man these things are huge compared to the regular 3DS. I wonder when they are going to make slots for RAM cartridges? If they did this then we could upgrade the RAM just like with a computer. Now that would be easier than making bigger 3DS's XD. I like the sizes but they should find a way to make slots for that XD.:)

Nah, just throwing that out there. I should have said "If Z/XZ/YZ is a thing, I guarantee it will have New 3DS functionality". :X

3DS to 3DS XL was more of a sidegrade/marginal upgrade. It had better build quality, slightly better battery, and slightly better angles for 3D, but it was pretty much a, well, extra-large 3DS. The New 3DS (they're going to have a dandy of a time with that name over here) is more of what the DSi was to the DS Phat/Lite--a near-objectively better system that carries over most of what the original system had, and throws on a bunch of stuff.

If you're happy with your current unit, I'd probably hold off. The name of the game with this new system seems to be "Convenience"--an integrated Circle Pad Pro, integrated NFC for Amiibo, more speed for web browsing/the system menu, an ambient light sensor, etc. The only thing you're super-duper going to be missing out on is any exclusive games, but there probably won't be more than a handful of those. To relate it back to the DSi, there were a total of five cartridge exclusives. Granted, those were exclusives mainly because they used the cameras, where as now we're dealing with significantly more power, but a publisher would be cutting off the currently 40 million plus 3DS base if they went New 3DS-only.

You might see a few lower-risk eShop games exclusive to the New 3DS, maybe a few more Wii ports. You're more likely going to get something similar to Pokemon BW/BW2; they were "DSi-enhanced", which means they could connect to WPA encrypted Wi-Fi, take video during Xtransceiver chats, and provide three bars in the battery level indicator instead of two, but they still worked totally fine on DS Phat/Lite. So developers might start gearing their games more towards the New 3DS and its power, but "Old 3DS" compatibility should still totally be there, lower FPS and all.

Personally I was already looking to get an XL, so this news just sweetens the deal for me, but yeah, you can probably totally wait for the "4DS" or whatever. That's also similar to what people did with the DSi--they totally missed out on DSiWare when it was coming out, but the 3DS eShop had pretty much all of it for sale later.

I hope it is backwards-compatible w/ DSPh/DSLite/DSi/DSi XL. When I think about the DSi, I think of "DS w/o the GBA-slot". So, thinking of precedent when it comes to predictions, does that mean DS/DSi games are not compatible w/ this new 3DS revision, meaning Pokemon D/Pe/Pl/HG/SS and/or B/W/B2/W2 cannot be played on this new 3DS?

^ If so, that forces people to choose between old vs. new: Old pokemon vs. Kalos/New Hoenn pokemon, and I bet people will be upset... If history is indicator, I bet that the DS1 will go further into obscurity when this comes out in America, in the form of "this system is NOT compatible w/ DS/DSi games that predate the Nintendo 3DS, and you CANNOT download any software that connects to any associated software that involves such systems."

^Is the above likely? Does that mean no PokeTransporting to any Kalos/New Hoenn games on this version of the 3DS from B/W/B2/W2?

^ We will have to wait and see to determine the answer to that...

Day 1 because of the strict upgrade from my 4 year old launch 3DS, Ive had brand name PCs last for a short amount of time.

Of course you can play DS games on the New 3DS. They use the same kind of slot like 3DS games do. The GBA slot was left out because it makes the system so fat + it generally takes place while it was not necessary.
