Canon names are Hilda and Hilbert. Not even trolling this time around.

I don't understand why they could not have kept Blair and Whitlea. They were bad, but not as bad as these names. They remind of hillbillies.
 
I have to admit, these names are pretty bad. :(

Good thing I always name my character, as I'm sure most people do. I can't imagine traveling around Unova as "Hilbert".

This is terrible... There are thousands of names out there, most of which are far better than these early/mid 20th century excuses for teenage names. Even Harold/Heide would have been better... A little.
 
So I knew the two characters are supposed to be older..

I thought teenagers.

Not Grandparents.

Or Great-grandparents.
 
I loved making inappropriate funny names for my rival in FR/LG back when I was younger. Anyways, I might have named someone Dilbert for the lolz, but NEVER Hilbert. Gamefreak is (supposed to be) trying to appeal to kids, not people who's decades total more than many player's years.
 
@NewKidOnTheBlock: Yes, but Emeralds Hold No Hope mentioned above that you can't rename the rival, so you will have to battle Hilbert or Hilda in the games apparently.
 
When do you battle your Rival? I only remember the character battling Bianca, Cheren, and N...

I could honestly care less about the names. As long as you can still name your own character, I'm fine.

I meant encounter, I guess? I'm not sure about everything in the game yet. xD
 
What's bulbapedia's source, why would they change their names? I'm pretty sure most the fans didn't hate Whitlea and Blair that much.
 
could they have picked worse names? why those names, they are just terrible. just another thing to nitpick i guess
 
Whoever was trying to be clever when making these names, it didn't work. At all.
Hilda sounds Norse, and what kind of a name is Hilbert? I thought the names would be Blair/Whitlea which, although not my style, are at least bearable.

But this? FFFFUUUU--
