Pokemon Parents and Pokemon?

Yeah my parents hate it too! They think it's a little immature for a 15 year old to be playing Pokemon games all the time (as well as collect the TCG.) It's not just from my parents it's from my friends too, they think Pokemon is just a little kids game. Honestly I don't let it really get to me, and I just sort of ignore it, it seems to help a little bit.

There is a bit of a double standard in this country. You dress like a cowboy from 125 years ago, you are fine. Dress like the middle ages, you are a loser.

@Buizel, I used to have friends like that. I lost all of them. If they can't respect my hobbies after I would nicely ask them to keap their thoughts to themselves on the matter then I really couldn't respect them. I avoided those people and eventualy lost all contact with them. Sad, really. Pokemon really wasn't worth losing a bunch of friends over. Oh well.
@omahanime, From my experiance a young child can dress up as either and be thought of as funny. While a grown man could dress up as either and be ridiculed. I think the double standard lies within the age, not the costume.

Well there isn't any function today for a robe and wizard outside of a D&D group.

Hey kids -haters gonna hate. You don't need to rationalize what you do to someone else. We're not talking about drugs, gambling, theft, bad behaviors, or adolescent hormones. It's just a game. The less you show you care what people think the less others will as well.

I see people everyday dressed as a cowboy. They look like they could be an extra in a western. People do not say bad things about them. I knew a business owner wore suit and tie by day, dressed as cowboy by night. He had no clue about livestock! But you belong to SCA do a re-enactment, they are derided. Do Civil War re-enacts get abused?

My parents hate because they think it's a waste of time.

Convince them that Pokemon is like chess. It takes skill and patience to do well, and a little bit of luck to win.

If that doesn't work, win a tournament, get money, rinse and repeat.

my parents supports me play pokemon....just because i love it. Not just that but helps my social skills which is the reason why my parents approve. And they tried to get a young me into leagues which i didnt want to, i was like 12-13 back then. I finally decided to go to leagues for first time when i was 18 after a few people at school convinced me so yeah....

They don't like it much where i can't go to tourneys like nat's and BR's how do i convince them to let me go to reg's and nat's i can make the money myself BTW i'm 14

My parents were always cool about pokemon, I'm 23 now and not once did they every say "Aren't you too old for this?". I guess they supported it so much when I was little because it was one of the few things that made me happy.

Also, you're never too old for the things you love.

Although, my parents have always approved of Pokemon so I don't have much experience with this sort of thing. The only experience I have is from dealing with friends who criticize the game. My parents always saw it as a way for me to meet new people with like interests. And as a young kid (I started playing at the age of 2) they thought it was a great way for me to learn math and reading.

Tell them to give your hobby a chance. Explain to them how this is your hobby, it is not a waste of time, and it helps you think quickly with math and strategic circumstances. One thing may be that they don't see it as a waste of time, but they feel you need to get out more and meet new friends. If you are already a fit guy with a bunch of friends then tell them that you feel your hobby is a lot better then lounging around watching TV or just hanging around on a computer like most people your age do. If you are a little lacking in social skills, good grades, or health then try to see their point a little. Try to improve the most important parts of your life before you have a talk with your parents about Pokemon.

Heh, I see kids who to buy booster packs and the parents are getting real upset to tell them no and then they start crying. Whew. Makes me glad I can buy my packs.

To tell you the truth though. I really don't know how to talk them into being more open about. Back then I would lie to my parents that I needed lunch money and ended buying Fossil, Jungle or Neo Genesis packs.

I guess if you're a good kid your parents don't have to worry about you doing drugs and becoming a dirtbag. Complaining about Pokemon is all they've got on you!

Some parents want to prevent their children from making, what they view to be, mistakes.

Well I have/had the same problem im 16 now but since I was young both parents of mine knew I collected cards and they were fine but as I got older my dad started to dissaprove he doesn't live with me so its not a huge problem its just I could never mention it to him or ask him to get me cards My mum didn't really care because she wasn't that bothered she didn't see it as a problem. Everyone at school found out about me and pokemon and for 2 days they laughed after that they forgot lol. My friends don't even mention it i've gone on abit lol but point is they have to accept it ,as it's you im sure they will come round just don't ask for cards lol

My parents are all right with Pokemon in general. HOWEVER, they hate Pokemon cards because I supposedly "hoard" them. I wouldn't call it "hoarding", but "safekeeping".
