PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013! Congratulations Nekoban Ryo and Hegafire0!

RE: PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013!

^^ that is a bro right there

On a more serious note I have a question on the ratings.
Do you think you'll ever make image based have more points for proper use of the text(obviously not as much as textbased) because I feel like the only reason I won't enter image is because its more about art and such and I would get blown out of the water. Not that there's anything erong w/ that its perfectly good the way it is just wondering

RE: PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013!

That's the point, actually. Image-based is mostly about how good the card looks. Text-based you don't have that, which is the chance to get more inventive with attack/ability effects and such. If they were both based off of wording and such, there wouldn't be much difference between the two categories.

...and I've decided to grade anabel's and Goobiedoob's entries, because Rally, whattaguy.

Yo DNA, when will you get the results up?

Hopefully tomorrow, or tonight if I can get them all done. As of the time I am writing this, I only have 5 more entries in text-based to grade (everyone from Machamp the Champion onward, alphabetically).

RE: PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013!

Rally that is pretty mean, did you not understand that DNA just wanted less work as those entries would not have won anyway? Now he has to write two more reviews!!

RE: PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013!

I thought aschefield101 was grading image based?

I'll answer this quote with a quote:

Mang, he should get flameh or cmper to be backup judges. Eh.

RE: PokéBeach Create-A-Card June 2013!

Tried to get it all done last night, but I still had - you guessed it - 2 more to finish (Teal and Zarco). Now those are done, and I can post the results.

aschefield101 did mention he had to contend with allergies this month and couldn't do it. CMP could probably be a good choice for a backup, though. I could approach him later. I haven't seem Flame Claw around here in ages.

Right, on to the fun stuff!

Because I do things alphabetically, the first thing I get a chance to look at is this Arbok here. For a newcomer this card is pretty decent - a nice choice of artwork for a Pokemon Prime, and the eye shine really rounds it out. Unfortunately that's about all there is. The "Arbok" foil name is a duller color than normal, and as for the attacks, the spacing and spelling are off. There should be a bit more space between the first and second attacks, and the numbers 30 and 40+ are too far over to the right. There are a few bits with the wording too - for example, Venoshock should be "If the Defending Pokémon is Poisoned, this attack does 40 damage plus 40 more damage" since it's HGSS wording. It's definitely not bad for a first try; it's just not amazing.

Yay, Mesprit! I don't see enough of Mesprit nowadays, sadly. Okay, let's see what we have here. ...To be perfectly honest, this card could actually pass off as a real card and no one would be the wiser - Mind Reader is worded a bit differently in reality (Once during your turn, when you put this Pokémon from your hand onto your Bench, you may search your deck for a card and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.), but not by very much. The 2 attacks + 1 ability feel a bit scrunched together due to limited spacing, but the spacing is consistent, to be sure...save for a tiny bit on the retreat cost (too left). What really stands out to me is Energy Blast - a very interesting cost and effect there. And in the end, the foil/light pattern on the blank itself stands out as being very pretty!

...I wish to touch it. To be honest, I do look forward to your image-based fakes, because they not only look very good, but their effects are extremely inventive, and this Lugia is no exception. This isn't the first time I've seen a Lugia in the contest, but that doesn't make this card any less impressive. The main draw seems to be Malignant Outrage, but there's also Psychic Shift as an alternative. The only real downside to this card is, like Arcticwhite's Mesprit, there isn't much space on the blank to avoid scrunching of words. But it seems to be pulled off pretty okay!

Slowking, hm? Kinda looks like a testing out of Neo-style blanks - the picture isn't much, just Slowking art tacked on a holo background. It kinda feels like it's swimming around seaweed, but...it feels kinda blah. But maybe it's just me! I know that Tails19950 guy takes existing TCG artworks and retools them with different color schemes, and they turn out okay. ...I feel like the font is a mite too wide (or big?) and it stands out a bit on the Pokemon Power - the words look a bit smooshed together. Speaking of the Pokemon Power...I have absolutely no idea what its effect is. Where are the damage counters being put (yes, it's put, not place)? Also, use numbers over words always (1, not one).

Delta Nite:

Delta Nite tries to wow us as usual, this time with a Light Froslass, because we need more Light Pokemon. The artwork is a really nice choice, and the holofoil gives the illusion of a snowfall. All in all it looks pretty good, though I notice only 2 small mistakes: there's a full stop after "Put Froslass on the Basic Pokemon" when there shouldn't be (Delta has this too), and there's an extra 'you' in the Pokemon Power...and the 'your' is in the wrong place. That made the power look nonsensical. Other than that...sweet.

First thing that stands out to me: the wrong font is being used, on everything but the attack flavor text. Notice the Pokedex stats and entry, how they're more italicized than would normally be there? The "Solrock", 70 HP, and 30 damage also have small font issues - they're a bit blocky. It looks like the right font but I think there's something off. The Energy symbols on the attacks, weakness, and retreat cost have some transparency issues (notice a lot of white specks?), the spacing on the attack text is off (it's too far down), and - something I recognize quicker on cards - the wording is incorrect. Psyshuffle's just looks messy; it should be "Look at your opponent's hand. If you find any basic Energy cards there, choose 1 of them and your opponent shuffles it into his or her deck". Rock Throw you just switch around: "The Defending Pokemon can't retreat during your opponent's next turn." It's definitely not horrible for a first try, but all the little bits adds up making it look a bit off.

Alexpoke LV.23 HP50

Procrastination Pokémon. Length: 5' 6", Weight: 120 lbs.

Pokémon Power: Postpone As long as Alexpoke is your Active Pokémon, you cannot draw a card. This power stops working if Alexpoke is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.

[C] Laze Around Remove 2 damage counters from Alexpoke. Alexpoke is now Asleep.

Weakness: [P], Resistance: None, Retreat Cost: 1

Claimed to be the rarest of all Slowpoke. It doesn't seem as slow as its kin, but seems to purposely put things off.

This card cannot be used.

(Note pointing to Pokémon number: A lie)

I should probably point out that Japanese cards do not use the phrases "Active Pokemon" and "Defending Pokemon" - it's "Battle Pokemon" and "opponent's Battle Pokemon". The word "Active" in the Japanese translation definitely jumps out as being a slight error, but I'm more used to looking at Japanese cards if anything.

I notice Alexpoke is based on the Neo set, as "Basic Pokemon" is right underneath HP. Other than that I don't think I can see any other issues with the card. Oh, and it's not "This card cannot be used". I see the word 'tournament' right there :p

Link Counter mechanic: If a Pokemon takes damage, all linked pokemon take damage. If it is knocked out with a link counter on it, all other pokemon with link counters on them are knocked out too. Same story with lost zone. Link counters are permanent unless an attack, power, body, trainer, supporter, or stadium remove it. OHKOs are negated by link counters.

And now to bring back Torterra LV.X + Shaymin LV.X.
...I instantly have to say that the originality score gets maxed out. Introducing totally new mechanics with little existing comparison in the TCG will tend to do that. (For the rest of you, don't think that'll automatically make you score well.) The art is somewhat plain, but I see you did that yourself, so it works. The Link Counter is balanced out by Gastly's lack of any sort of power...and its 5 retreat cost. I see you took everything into account. Good job.

The wording's a bit off but it's pretty darn close. It mostly has to do with how the sentences are ordered more than anything. I'll tell you how the wording would look better:

"Choose 1 of your Benched {G} Pokemon. Place a Link Counter on both Gastly and that Pokemon. If Gastly's maximum HP is higher than that Pokemon's maximum HP, that Pokemon's maximum HP becomes the same as Gastly's. If that Pokemon's maximum HP is higher than Gastly's maximum HP, Gastly's maximum HP becomes the same as that Pokemon's."

"If you have no Benched {G} Pokemon, this attack's base damage is 30."

You know how I normally feel about your cards so I can skip most of it. As usual, you have practiced well, having a good artwork choice, good spacing, and humorous Pokedex entry. But I see wording problems! Sadface! 1) The "before applying Weakness and Resistance" clause is absent in the Ability; 2) second attack should read "If the Defending Pokemon is Knocked Out by this attack"

and why am I not surprised you picked Nidoking

Ralts? Huh, didn't see that one coming. I feel your problem, though, is similar to GoobieDoob's: your spacing between letters is off - it looks more than is seen on normal cards. This can be seen in the Pokemon Power text, the 40 HP, the 10 damage from the attack, and the Pokedex entry. As far as wording goes, the é in Pokémon Power is missing, and the rest of it, have it as "you may have Ralts do 10 damage to the Defending Pokémon." And are you applying Weakness and Resistance? I don't know for sure.
The card is nice, but sadly the only thing I don't find plain about it is the picture. Good picture to be sure, though.

For a minute there I thought I was reading a Clefable because of Metronome, and then looked back up. ...Normally Jynx is denoted as a Basic in the TCG, but okay, that works too. ...I think you forgot to end the sentence at "flip a coin" on Metronome, but other than that the wording is perfect. I can see bits from Thundurus EX and Zoroark BW in here, but also nerfed a bit as well, requiring a coin flip and a Plasma Energy attached. ...Interesting.

Meloetta EX! ...a good one, actually. Wow. ...I'm a stickler for wording, though - excluding damage should be enclosed by commas and not parentheses, there's an apostrophe missing in "opponent's", and Defending and Confused aren't capitalized. As far as the card itself is concerned, your entire field gets the effect of Unown G, and it goes both ways, so you can't use stuff like Victini's Turbo Energize for anybody, so that works. Embargo is O_O broked, even if it does do zero damage. Then again, there are worse things, but a T1 Item lock is pretty devastating. Psybeam works, though.

Shadow Hand [P] [C] 20 x
Does 20 damage times the amount of Pokemon in the Lost Zone (both yours and your opponent's).

Deadly Poison [P] [P] [C] 70
The Defending Pokemon is now Poisoned. Put 2 damage counters instead of 1 on the Pokemon in between turns.

Weakness: [P] x2
Resistance: [G] - 20
Retreat Cost: 0

Gengar makes a return to say hello from the Lost Zone, and he's brought some new toys with him. His Ability In the "Shdows" seems to be a stronger version of Relicanth CoL's Ancient Wisdom - which, by the way, has a better wording; you should check it out. And I know this is just a minor point, but attack costs go to the left of the attack name, not the right. All things considered, however, you have constructed a magnificent card. Even though it's taking bits and pieces from older cards, I already love how this month is turning out.

Claydol GE looks like he's popping in to say hi as well. Cosmic Cycle is a weaker version of Cosmic Power, looking very alike Caitlin from Megalo-Cannon, and Psychic Blast...beg pardon but that's OP: count the number of all Energy in play, multiply by 10, and all your opponent's Pokemon take that much damage? Any other spread or multi-snipe has not gone higher than 30... Sadly that kinda shot poor Claydol's credibility out of the sky...

Gardevoir certainly has a flair for the interesting and potent, that's for sure. This time around she sports the power to copy all Abilities in play except for Garbotoxin (come to think of it, Garbotoxin could create an infinite loop), be they static or voluntary. Her attack, while doing only 40 damage, serves as a Double Gust, moving her to the Bench - which might be necessary to get maximum usage out of the Ability Link. (Can you imagine her in Blastoise/Keldeo, or even Gothitelle/Mew EX? Stuck in the active spot with no way to retre-NOPE DECK AND COVER) Just the sheer amount of shenanigans you can do with this makes me smile. Very nice job with all the flavor text and such, by the way. (I should say that to everyone, but I keep forgetting.)

Retrograde is basically the same thing as Meloetta EX's Serene Grace (see Bo$$_89's entry), so that's the wording it should be using. As for Ambicapital Bite, I'd probably put "put damage counters on the Attacking Pokemon equal to the amount of damage this Pokemon took"...not like your wording is wrong; it could just be a bit more specific.
Girafarig was an extremely interesting choice, though, and it doesn't get as much mention as other cards...but it does have a very fun reputation and this is no exception.

Scolipede. Only a matter of time before the Centipede of Death made its way in here. Huge Poison is unusual; does it mean that whenever a Defending Pokemon comes up, it automatically becomes Poisoned (with 2 damage counters placed per turn)? What if it's overridden with another effect such as Crobat's Ultra-Toxic Fang or even the common Hypnotoxic Laser? I feel you could elaborate on that point a bit more. And please, please, please get the capitalization right on card effects! I am a big stickler for that (and on wording in general).
Reason the believability score is low: Team Poison is ridiculous (think about it for a bit - it only needs 5 Psychic-types in play, on either side, to OHKO anything - Eviolite is nulled by poison).

I remember Bo$$_89 or someone saying something about how broken Haunting Spirit was. It is, actually, if it isn't toned down - say, targeting only 1 of the Defending Pokemon's attacks, and/or placing only 3 or 4 damage counters on everyone. Intensify Pain looks exactly the same as Gengar LV.X's Compound Pain, but the W&R clause is missing (check the wording on it). This guy doesn't. He looks...ordinary, all things considered. But that can also be a good thing, because it ensures that he won't look really overpowered for the grading - and that's true, he doesn't. The trickiest bit of this contest is to make sure you get the wording right (Wording), then think up something new and innovative to stick on it (Creativity), but also making sure its relative power is okay (Believability) (or reversing the last two steps). Giving a card something new without making it too strong is the hard part, and although you have the Playability bit down pat, sadly the Creativity score is a bit lower.

Is it weird that the first thing I think of is not Dragon Roar (on Dragonite ex), but rather how to try and make an ideal Medicham draw engine? It's like putting 3 Medicham in your deck just for the draw power. Empoleon becomes insane! Oh wait, it has Exeggcute. Perfect Strike is a pretty solid attack, though, yet I could imagine it better doing 60 damage instead of 70 (compare Bibarel SF). And I know this is a minor issue, but it'd be "whenever this Pokemon is put into your discard pile", not "this card" (compare Audino BCR). But I definitely do like this card. ...It's funny how, so many times during this contest, I wish a lot of these cards were real so I could build decks out of them.

The results are in!

For image-based, due to the way the grading is broken up, every little thing becomes important. Surprisingly enough, the winner this month for image-based is Alexpoke with his Nekoban Ryo card - wait, I got that backwards, didn't I - scoring a very respectable 49 points! There was a 3-way tie for second, with Blui's Lugia EX, Delta Nite's Light Froslass, and Nod3's Gastly - funnily enough, if Delta Nite hadn't made that giant wording flub with the you and your, he would have won with the perfect 50. Silly Delta Nite!

For text-based...I got a whole lot of 46s, wow. That's quite surprising. But at the same time it's good, because it shows a lot of you guys are about on the same level and striving to improve, which I like to see. First place ultimately goes to Hegafire0's Gardevoir, scoring the perfect 50, with Teal's Metagross very close behind with 49.

All things considered, this was truly a fantastic month! I hope to see sharp bodies as well as sharp minds when the next month rolls around. See you on Monday!

Sharp....

Steel Type Confirmed!

Gratz to the winners, and it was fun to do this. Maybe next time I'll go for image based now that the fonts are (somewhat) working.

EDIT: Weavile/Medicham/Exegcutte = Good Deck.

So Special costed me the title. I knew I forgot something with the wording...

Woah, PMJ didn't win or get runner up, and I got 1 more point than him. Woah dude.

Congratulations to alexpoke (whoops, I mean Catbag/coin cat currency), Blui, Delta Nite, Hegafire and of course, Teal!

And good job to everyone else, too!

Edit: Delta is not equal to Delta Nite. Hehe. Hehehe. ^^;

Heh. ;_;
I'm actually really happy that Alexpoke won! Seriously, talk about Creativity! Everyone else did a good job. Nod's Gastly deserves a special mention, loved that one.

I guess everyone entering next month's contest is picking up a fight...

Because Gengar isn't in the Shadows, its in the Shdows

Congrats to Hega and Nekobyan! Good work everyone.

I imagine that it would have been the wording in BW. I forgot that Relicanth card existed.

There is no BW-on Lost Zone wording equivalent. When in doubt, play it safe and go with what already exists.

G.C,XX OASFGH FINE

gg everyone, will crush your puny dreams next month!!!

Also I just now noticed there's a pixel line below the name on my card, this is not my fault

I knew there was some card that had the same effect as Intensify Pain, but I couldn't find it anywhere. You also messed up my final score. It was supposed to be 50!

That should be 45, lol.
