Chapter Three: Check Your Pokémon At The Border!
After a day of cruising, the rather large gang arrived at the port in the NPZ. John’s friends docked the boat, and then police surrounded them.
“Freeze!” called one of the officers, “Trainers are not permitted here!”
“Look,” said John, “Just because we have different views on life doesn’t mean we can’t get along.”
“Get out before we arrest you!”
Max pulled John away and said, “Let me handle this.”
“Good luck,” said John.
“No need,” Max turned to the officer, “Do you have the slightest idea who I am?”
“Some punk trainer who needs to learn his place!” yelled the officer.
“Wrong. I’m Max Shade. Son of the first lady of the NPZ and stepson of the president. So if you don’t let me and my friends in, I’ll call Chris on his personal cell and have you guys arrested for harassing me, how’s that sound?”
“Like we haven’t heard that one.”
Max flipped open the PokéGear on his wrist and pressed some buttons.
“…Hey Chris!” said Max, “Yeah, I wanted to come in, but your dumb police are giving us a hard time…uh-huh…uh-huh…thanks. He’ll be coming down personally.”
“I doubt that, kid.”
“Oh really?” said a voice from behind the officer.
“Yeah really!” said the officer, “And if anyone has a problem with it,” he turned around, “They can kiss my aaaAAAH Mr. Pesos!”
“Is there a problem with my stepson and his friends coming in?”
“You are the one who ordered all trainers must stay out!”
“And I also said that my stepson and his friends have diplomatic immunity. They can come in, but, as a precaution, I’m going to ask to hold onto your Pokémon.”
“No way!” said Bela, “Why should we trust….John!”
John was the first to hand over his PokéBalls. Max was second.
“Well,” said Bela.
One by one, each trainer handed over their Pokémon.
They took a bus to Chris’ mansion, and as they got off, Max said, “Chris, can I have your I.D. badge?”
“Yeah,” said Chris, “Don’t do anything stupid.”
“Don’t worry. Tell Mom I’ll be back in an hour or so. Guys! Make yourselves at home; I’ve got an errand to run.”
“Max,” said Rich, “I’ve known you a long time; what are you up to?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Max got back onto the bus and the gang followed Chris inside.
“Welcome to the NPZ,” said Chris, “I know it’s not every trainer’s dream to come here, but nonetheless, it’s my home,” he turned to John, “You look familiar, have we met?”
“Yes,” said John, “I’m John; I was on the NPZ and Orre treaty panel with you.”
“Yes, of course! It’s a pleasure to have you here. I was actually about to contact you.”
“What for?”
“Well, it seems there is a radical trainer who has been coming into our zone and attacking. The last thing I want to start is a war, but my people are getting rather angry that I’ve taken no efforts in capturing Nightshade.”
“Nightshade?” asked John.
“You’ve heard of my stepson’s imposter?”
“I’d say so,” chimed in Michael, “He shot John a few weeks back.”
“So,” said Chris, “It seems we have a mutual enemy?”
“That’s how it would appear,” said John, “We’re actually going after him now.”
“Perhaps I can be of some assistance?”
“Sure. Kay Gee, come over here…Chris, this is Kevin Garret; he’s my good friend and a battling genius. Perhaps you should talk with him?”
“Sounds good.”
“Hold up!” said Abad, “Remember Max’s deal?”
“Of course,” said John.
“Good; Jay! You go with them.”
“No problem,” said Jay.
The trio went into the next room.
John walked outside, and James followed him.
“John,” said James, “Something is troubling you.”
“Why do you ask?” asked John.
“I didn’t ask; I was stating a fact.”
John laughed a little, and said, “When someone tries to kill you and can show up undetected on the most protected island in the world, everything troubles you.”
“You have a decent security system?”
“The best in the world.”
“Who designed it?”
“Doc and this guy named Josh. He seemed to be very inclined to technology.”
“That’s it then,” said Max as he walked up to them.
“Max!” said James.
“Hey James, John. The only person who can make his way through a security system is the one who designed it. I doubt one of your friends would do it, so it must be Josh. Did he have a last name?”
“I don’t recall what it was,” said John, “Maybe Doc knows?”
The trio ran inside, and John yelled, “Doc!”
Doc turned as did everyone else, “What is it?”
“Josh! That guy who designed our security system!”
“What about him?...You think he is Nightshade?”
“Exactly!” said Max, “What was his last name?”
“Ward, I believe.”
Max’s eyes grew wide. It didn’t take a psychic to tell the name got to him.
“Max?” asked Chris as he, Kay Gee, and Jay returned to the room.
“Max,” said John, “Do you know Josh Ward?”
“I’ve got another errand…I’ll be back later,” said Max.
Max left. John approached Chris, and said, “Old buddy of his?”
“The opposite,” said Chris.
“Josh was Max’s enemy at a school he went to for four years,” said Rich.
It was one year earlier, and Max was preparing the stadium. Max had been attending Kanto High School to further his skills as a trainer. Not only was his final exam (a Pokémon battle against a random teacher) today but he was on the tech crew there. The crew was setting up and Max was pumped.
Then, Josh Ward, who had graduated the year before, showed up to help.
“What in the name of Arceus’ green earth do you think you are doing here?” Max yelled at him.
“I’m here to help,” said Josh.
“No you aren’t.”
“Max,” said his friend Joe, “Calm down.”
“No, I won’t calm down! This guy doesn’t belong here! Ask anyone!”
“I was asked to come here!” said Josh, “I don’t know what your problem with me is but you need to chill.”
“One-on-one battle.”
“What?”
“You heard me freak! One-on-one match. You win, you stay. I win, you leave and go onto adult life and stop playing high school.”
“Fine, go Metagross!”
“Meta-meta!”
“Charizard, I choose you!”
“Charrrrooooaaaarrr!”
“Metagross!” called Josh, “Use Stone Edge!”
“META!”
Sharp stones flew and hit Charizard directly.
“CHARRRR!”
Josh’s face had a look of shock.
“What?” asked Max, “Expecting a one-hit? Charizard, use Flamethrower!”
“CHAAAARRRRRR-ROOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRR!”
Charizard blasted red-hot flames at Metagross and knocked him down.
“Now finish him any way you want!” yelled Max.
“Char!”
Charizard flew into the air. As he rose above the clouds and out of sight, the clouds began to glow orange and red.
“He going to try the Kamikaze?” asked Josh, “No Pokémon has pulled that move off in centuries!”
“Then today!” said Max, “Me and Charizard make history!”
Some teachers had walked into the stadium, and were watching the battle.
“CHARIZARD!” yelled Max to the sky as though trying to talk to Arceus himself, “BLAZING KAMIKAZE!”
A loud roar was heard and Charizard burst out of the clouds in a nosedive; his whole body was engulfed in blue flames.
Everyone who had gathered watched in awe. Charizard stuck Metagross with a force that could level a skyscraper. The explosion was so huge, the teacher Max would later be fighting sent out his Alakazam just in time to create a psychic bubble around everyone so they weren’t incinerated.
Metagross was knocked out and then some, as was Charizard.
Max ran out and helped Charizard up.
“I win,” he said. Charizard regained consciousness but was badly injured.
His teacher approached him, and said, “You pass.”
“No exam?” asked Max.
“After that display, you are exempt. And Josh, I believe you need to go now.”
“Max!” cried Josh, “One day! You WILL regret this!” and then he ran off.
“After that battle,” said Rich, “Charizard was unable to battle…Max retired him.”
Max walked in, and said, “Thanks Chris. Tell mom I’m sorry I couldn’t stay. Let’s rock guys.”
John shook Chris’ hand, and said, “I’ll be in touch.”
“Same on my end,” said Chris as they left.
On their way to the cruise liner, John said, “So, the rumors that the Kamikaze returned are true?”
“No,” said Max, “Charizard can’t battle anymore. He gave up the rest of his battling career to win that match. Since no other Pokémon has pulled of their elemental Kamikaze, and Charizard can’t anymore, it is not here anymore.”
“Sounds like he was a loyal Pokémon.”
“He still is, in his own way.”
As they untied the ship and headed off to sea, Max stood at the nose of the ship, and stared into the sunset, and whispered to himself, “I have to set things right.”
He fiddled with his pendant again, and then felt in his coat pocket. The metal barrel had a familiar feel, and yet, at the same time, Max had never held a handgun in this life before.
