Chapter 3
Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep
Matt awoke with an annoying sound in his ear, he opened his eyes to see a white room with a TV hanging from the ceiling and what looked to be a strange sort of monitor next to his side. He then realized that he was in a bed, “A bed? The last thing I remember I was in the town square but now I’m in a bed?” he thought. His eyes were drawn to his arm, where he saw a tube of some sort sticking out, he instantly realized that he was in a hospital somewhere. He sat up in bed and looked through the doorway only to see the white of the hallway. A man walked by and noticed Matt was awake. He walked into the room holding a clipboard and said
“Matt I see you’re awake, how are you feeling?”
“How are they?” Matt blurted out
“Your friends? Ellen has a concussion and 2 broken ribs, which is really a relief the way she was thrown back. Max is fine, in fact the last time I saw him he was stuffing his face in the cafeteria. Crystal is fine as well, just a little cut up. Brett broke his leg pretty badly, he to broke a rib. Calum, Ryan and Ashton are thankfully fine, they didn’t seem to be affected at all.”
“That’s all good to hear doctor but I was talking about my Pokémon,”
“Empoleon and Raichu went into what we call Atrial Fibrillation; it’s where the heart beats irregularly. However, in this case due to the massive adrenaline rush it was beating very fast meaning Cardiac Arrest was a real threat.”
“You’re not answering my question,”
“It was a brutally tough fight that they went through but with our help they are both stable as of now. However it is crucial that they not battle for a while, they will go through rehab as will Ashton’s Torterra.”
“Can I see them?”
“Don’t you want to know why you’re in here?”
“Oh yeah right, tell me.”
“Well its nothing serious, the medical team that rushed out there to retrieve you simply found you passed out. We think it was a combination of adrenaline and smoke from the battlefield, nothing serious. Oh here let me get this pesky IV drip out of you,”
“Thanks for taking care of me, I appreciate that! Soooo…”
“Yes go see your Pokémon,”
Matt jumped up and ran out of the room.
“They’re in room 108!” Yelled the doctor as Matt zipped down the hallway.
Matt walked into room 108 to see Raichu and Empoleon lying in adjacent beds. Sitting next to Raichu he noticed Calum with a saddened look on his face. He turned and saw Matt standing in a medical robe, “Oh, nice to see you awake,” Calum exclaimed.
“Thanks, how are they doing?” Matt replied as he pulled up a chair and sat next to Calum
“Oh, they’re just resting, they’ve been awake on and off though,”
“Good to hear, thanks for checking in on them, how long have you been here anyway?”
“Since the battle,”
“Calum, its Eight AM, you’ve been here 16 hours?”
“Yeah…Matt did I ever tell you that I once had a Raichu?”
“What? Really you did? When?”
“I was traveling through Johto, Ryan was back visiting his family and I spent that year with just me and my Pokémon. That was the year all my Eevee evolved into their specific types. Well I was training on a river bank right off a small town called Treeburville. My Vaporeon had just evolved so I was working on her swimming. The river currents were surprisingly fast which was why it was great to work on her endurance. Well the rest of my Pokémon, Glaceon, Leafeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Espeon and Raichu were playing and prancing around a tree. I had ordered my Vaporeon to use a water gun, Vaporeon shot the water gun at the tree. No harm was intended, it was simply a good target for the shot. Well the tree was much weaker then we even thought and one of its branches fell right down in Raichus direction. It was instinct what he did, he jumped out of the way with the agility I had taught him as a Pikachu. Unfortunately the water was behind him, not land. The fast current swooped him up and he flew down the river. Vaporeon and I jumped in to chase him. I soon realized the mistake in that, Vaporeon had control with her aqua-dynamic body but I didn’t.
We soon realized that the reason the current was so fast was because of the approaching water fall. It was just like in a TV show, Vaporeon soon lost control but was able to grab onto a rock right before the waterfall, I grabbed onto her tail and I reached for Raichu. Everything happened in slow motion, and I remember it like it was yesterday. His hand just slipped through mind, the cold water splashing up against us made everything to slippery.
My Pokémon saw the whole ordeal and ran for help, when I was finally out of there I ran down the hill to the bottom of the waterfall. A fisherman saw everything and was able to snatch Raichus body out of the water before the Carvannah got to him. I buried him over in the forest near Goldenrod city where I caught him. I decided to make his life live on in every day I train, every battle I have, I do it for him. He was one of my strongest Pokémon that’s for sure, and he was great.”
“Calum, wow that’s awful I’m so sorry,”
“No don’t apologize it’s not your fault.”
“Hey Calum, one question,”
“Yes,”
“Where are we?”
Calum chuckled “We’re in the Hearthome City’s emergency center, they decided it would be better to just take us here then fly us back to Pokémon Island where your headquarters private infirmary is.”
“That makes sense,”
“Ahh good you’re both in here, come, follow me,” said Mr. Bing as he waltzed in unexpectedly and then waltzed right out.
Calum and Matt looked at each other and then flew out of the room in hopes to catch Bing. He was walking down a hallway rather quickly, Matt concluded he must be nervous, or at least that’s what he seemed to be.
Soon a large table came into view, much like the conference table they had back at HQ but a little smaller and more standard. Sitting at the table was Bing, Ryan and another familiar face, Gregor. Calum and Matt greeted everyone and then took their seats with curious looks on their faces.
“Now, I bet you all are wondering what brings you four together again, well it’s the same reason you were together the first time.”
“Oh joy” Matt murmured to himself
“One of our best trainers from the newest and probably last wave of 100 kids we have brought in has found something. He was passing the shrine, which has been thoroughly searched since you had been there last; he stumbled upon what he described as some sort of gem on what looked like a collar.”
“Whoa whoa whoa, hang on there, are you saying the void pendant regenerated or something?” Blurted Matt out in confusion
“No I’m not saying it regenerated, I’m saying it simply has re-appeared on the scene.” Replied Bing
“What are you saying? Calum, you said it was destroyed,”
“I never said that, I simply said that it was not needed to be worried about anymore.”
“So it was never destroyed, that’s just great!” said Matt sarcastically
“How come no one ever told me this?!” exclaimed Ryan who was apparently unaware as well.
“Ryan, You and Matt as you know are about 5 years younger than Calum and I are, we knew you wouldn’t understand it fully for a while, so we didn’t bother telling you everything.” Gregor replied
“So what did happen?” Matt inquired
“Basically Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie couldn’t destroy it alone, they were only able to hide it again.”
“So here’s the thing,” said Bing “John, the trainer who found it, was told to not hold it, simply lay it on the ground in which it emerged and guard it. He has also been told not to bring any attention to himself, that is until you four arrive to take the Pendant back to Pokémon Island HQ. I will meet you there.”
“Doesn’t sound too bad,” exclaimed Ryan
“That is, as long as we can get to it before the UN does.” Matt replied
“Oh yes that reminds me of one more thing” said Bing “Hey all you listening on the other side of that door! Get in here!” Bing yelled at the top of his lungs.
All of a sudden the door opened and Max, Ellen, Brett, Crystal, and Ashton walked in. Brett had a large cast on his leg and Ellen had some contraption wrapped around her stomach to help with her broken ribs. They all took a seat and looked at Mr. Bing awaiting what seemed to be so important.
“Well the things is, the United Nations may be the head of this operation but they’re not calling the shots, in fact they’re not doing much at all. Does the name Igor Von Stronz mean anything to any of you?”
They all racked their brains and then shook their heads.
“Didn’t think so, he was once worked for the PIA, although I fired him because of his un-ethical ideas and plans on using Pokémon for warfare. Not what we’re doing now, I mean using them to power nuclear weapons so powerful they could wipe out an entire continent. Anyway he somehow got back into power and is leading the attack on us. It’s not just officers trying to collect our Pokémon anymore; he wants to wipe us out. He has instructed his army and their Pokémon to stop at nothing. Which means the use of the Void Pendant is entirely up for grabs, which is why I need you 4 to get over there and secure it before it’s snatched from us and used as a weapon.”
“So does this change everything or change nothing at all?” Questioned Crystal
“Everything,” said Bing “because now, we may just have an ally. But don’t worry about that, Matt, Calum, Ryan, Gregor, what are you guys still doing here? Move, time is of the essence.” The four rushed out of the room with the door slamming behind them. “Now the rest of listen to me very carefully, the void pendant could be our great for us or the worst thing that could happen to us…”
“That’s great to know Bing, but what does that have to do with us?” Asked Ashton
“Just because you’re not part of the destined four doesn’t mean you don’t have work to do. Igor’s grunts have been spotted lurking around at night in Mossdeep, we don’t have knowledge of what they have been doing but I think it’s pretty obvious it has something to do with the space program. Max, Ashton, Crystal, I need you guys to go to Mossdeep for the next few weeks and do some digging, but be on guard the whole time. Remember to lay very low.”
“You got it Bing,” said Max as he, Crystal, and Ashton walked out the door ready for the intense steak out.
“Soooo…are we just going to sit here the whole time or what?” Asked Ellen
“You know I would be ok with a little Rest and Relaxation,” said Brett with a smile
“No no no, you may be injured but you’re not useless. Look at your Pokedexs now,”
They both pulled out of their pockets their Pokedexs to realize that they had been upgraded with the ability to track the movement of any Pokedex in the world, even Bings.
“In time that will come in handy, however right now I want you to follow me onto the helicopter waiting on the roof, and we must get back to headquarters.” Bing said as he got out of his chair and headed for the door.
As they boarded the copter they discussed a plan to get back the upper hand, however it may just be too risky.
On Pokémon Island
“Why is it that we know exactly where this place is but we still spend hours walking in circles to find it?” questioned Ryan
“You know it has to be kept a secret so it can’t be on any map which means we know its somewhere in a 5 mile radius, not exactly where it is,” Gregor replied.
“Wait Wait, up ahead through those trees, I think I see it,” Said Ryan as he ran off toward the ancient temple.
“No Ryan wait it might be a…” Matt yelled too late, Ryan had run into the clearing only to be knocked to the ground by a massive bubble beam.
In seeing that Matt, Calum and Gregor reached to their belts releasing a small fighting force all in its own. Matt had released his Gallade and Roserade, Calum released his Vaporeon and Skarmory and Gregor released his Flygon and Glaceon. Six very strong Pokémon were ready to jump into action, the three trainers walked towards the clearing where the temple could be seen. The woods were so thick to the point that the Pokémon releasing the deadly attack could not be seen, and neither could the trainer calling the shots.
Calum knew the only way to coax out the Pokémon was to give it the bait it wanted. “Skarmory now!” he called, the shining silver bird flew as fast as he could down the open path. The second Skarmory got past those trees another bubble beam was fired, completely missing the bird with its supersonic speed. With the Pokémon distracted Gallade and Roserade jumped out and pounced at what they realized to be a Crawdaunt. Roserade hurled a leaf storm at the giant lobster and Gallade knocked it off its feet with a psycho cut, it was safe to say it was out cold. Matt walked up with Calum and Gregor, along with their Pokémon. Calum rushed to Ryan, who luckily just had gotten the wind knocked out of him.
“I don’t see anyone,” said Matt as he looked around.
All of a sudden a loud raspy voice was heard “That’s because what you don’t see can harm you the most…”
