RE: Pokemon Journey Through Life: We Must Fight for What We Love! Chapter 6 now up!
Chapter 7 – Our Psyche
Matt and Emily slowly stood up, Emily couldn’t have seemed more sure of herself. However, Matt seemed off, and he could feel something going on inside him, something he hadn’t felt in a long, long time. The creepy, thin man’s Houndoom began to charge at Matt and Emily. Matt reached his hand down to his belt, and Emily began to grab a Pokeball of her own. Houndoom was moving faster and faster. He was twenty feet away, then fifteen feet away, then ten. Things seemed to be happening in slow motion for Matt. His hand was frozen on his belt; Emily however had released her Blastoise in no time. Houndoom had pounced off his back feet and was lunging for Matt and Emily. Matt couldn’t breathe. His mind screamed and he fell to his knees as Houndoom flew over to him.
“I…” Matt was stuttering, “I can’t do this.”
“Matt!” Emily cried; she didn’t have time to react to what was going on. Houndoom had now turned himself around and was coming back for another shot. “Blastoise, surf!” She called, wanting to make sure she didn’t miss. Blastoise let out a huge amount of water from both of its cannons as well as its mouth. It was so powerful it soaked Houndoom in his tracks, knocking him out. The water splashed off the ground and hit Matt like a blanket, his body now lay flat on the ground, and he could no longer move.
“You think that’s all I have,” the creepy, thin man chuckled. “You’re dead wrong! Shiftry, come out and do your damage, leaf storm!” Shiftry’s eyes began to glow a dark green and from his hands a plethora of leaves jetted out heading for Emily, Matt, and Blastoise.
“Blastoise, withdraw!” Emily called as her blue turtle began to shield itself. Emily saw the leaves getting closer out of the corner of her eye. She dropped herself to the ground and the razor sharp leaves flew over head. Her Blastoise was unharmed and enthusiastically came out of its shell and stood up ready for more. “Blastoise, Hydro Pump!” Emily commanded in hopes to buy a little time. Emily quickly crawled over to Matt, who appeared to be unconscious now. Attached to a clip on his pants was his Pokedex, Emily knew exactly what to do. After a few clicks on the touch screen, she signaled all of Matt’s team with an emergency alert. She still had a fight to win.
She looked away from the Pokedex to see Shiftry hammer Blastoise with a giga drain. Blastoise fell to the ground and had clearly been knocked out. Emily stood up and returned her beloved turtle and sent out her gigantic horned beetle. “Heracross, Megahorn!” The blue bug was now airborne and zoomed towards Shiftry. In a blink of an eye, before the creepy, thin man could react Shiftry was on the ground summoning all its strength to get up.
Where are they? Emily had crawled over and was now kneeling at Matt’s side.
No, I need to think realistically. His life could be at stake, Emily thought.
“Vaporeon, Butterfree, time to move! Butterfree use silver wind, Vaporeon cover Heracross!” Vaporeon and Heracross quickly ran into a defensive formation waiting for the next move as Butterfree landed a silver wind. Butterfree’s blow knocked out Shiftry, and Emily was now as confident as ever.
“So that’s how you want to play the game huh? Fine by me! Tyranitar, Honchkrow, Weavile, now!” The creepy, thin man yelled as the three Pokémon shot out of their Pokeballs. A large Sandstorm was created from Tyranitar and it became suddenly hard for Emily and her Pokémon to see. The creepy, thin man’s Weavile quickly jumped on top of Honchkrow and together they flew above the storm.
“Butterfree, Heracross, fly high!” Emily called following her opponents Pokémon’s instincts. “Now, Vaporeon, use surf straight forward!” The blue water dog shot out a tremendous amount of water clearing a path in the sandstorm, making Tyranitar visible. The creepy, thin mad stood shocked as his Tyranitar sat exposed.
“Honchkrow, Weavile, take out that Vaporeon quick!”
“Butterfree, Heracross, cut them off! Don’t let them touch Vapoeron!’ Butterfree and Heracross began an aerial dance with Honchkrow constantly blocking him and leaving no open access points for them to get through.
“Honchkrow, Weavile, use pure force, now!” The creepy, thin mans defenses were down and he had lost the upper hand. He was becoming sloppy.
“Vaporeon, hit Tyranitar quickly with a…”
Tyranitar had been hit in the back by a hydro pump coming from what appeared to be nowhere; however it was clear it was courteous of Max’s Gyrados. Max and Ashton had received Emily’s distress call and they quickly came running; Max was discharged from the hospital just in time. Max’s Gyrados let out a victorious roar as Tyranitar failed to get up.
“What’s wrong?” yelled Max from across the Battlefield.
“It’s Matt, I don’t know what happened.”
“Gyrados, keep your distance between us and that man okay? We alerted the others on the helicopter, we told them to stay away and that we could handle it. We don’t know who else could lurk around here, so leave quickly!” Max consulted.
“Fearow, we need your help!” Ashton’s Fearow was quickly released and ready to take orders,
“Fly Matt back to headquarters okay?” Fearow flew across the battlefield over Gyrados and the fallen Tyranitar to Emily and the collapsed Matt. He gracefully landed and Emily placed Matt on his back and then climbed on behind him. With three quick flashes of light Emily was in possession of all of her Pokémon and Fearow flew in to the sky.
The wind was flying through Emily’s hair. She was trembling above fearow’s strong wings. She had never been in a situation like this before, never seen death knocking at the door. However after spending two days with Matt, she’d been reborn in excitement and thrill. She had one arm gripped tightly around Matt and another clenching Fearow’s back. She had been periodically looking around; making sure no one had followed her. She was especially worried now that headquarters was in sight. Fearow began to descend and Emily’s heart was racing, “Land on the helicopter landing pad, right in front of you, okay Fearow?” Fearow gave a squawk of understanding and in mere seconds they were on the roof of the headquarters.
Emily knew she couldn’t carry Matt for very long, so she quickly released her Absol and carefully placed Matt on its back. “Absol, be very careful okay?!” Emily commanded in fear. She and Absol began to walk quickly to the door atop the roof that was surprisingly unlocked. Emily feared she would have to break the door down, but that fear quickly fell out of her mind. Absol slowly trotted down the stairs as Emily ran ahead. “Anyone here!?” she called as she paced the hallways of the large building. She suddenly heard a door open behind her, then a deep, comforting voice came out of it.
“Why yes, who are you?”
“My names Emily, I’ve been helping Matt, and well I guess everyone. But he needs help,” Emily was shaking, yet she never had such a rush.
“I’m Mr. Bing, where’s Matt?”
Emily sent a blank stare down the hall towards Absol. She lifted her finger and pointed. Bing turned his head and saw Matt attempting to walk, and using Absol to distribute some weight.
“Denis, get out here please. I need your help.” Bing quickly rushed to
Matt and grabbed him just as he was about to fall. Dr. Finch was not far behind Bing. Together they lifted Matt off his feet and were now carrying him as if he were a small, playful child. Bing was holding on tightly to Matt’s shoulders and back as Finch held Matt’s legs. Without another word shared between the two men, Matt was quickly brought to the infirmary and laid down in a bed. He had lost consciousness once again.
Emily had thanked and returned her Absol, and was now sitting as Bing and Finch got to work on Matt.
“I’ll place the IV,” said Bing, “Will you hook him up the monitor?”
Finch nodded. As Bing stuck an IV needle in to Matt’s vein, Finch stuck metal clips to Matt’s fingers. Soon the monitor began to respond, beep-beep-beep, Matt’s pulse was slow, but normal.
“Now,” Bing turned to Emily as Finch sat down in a chair across the bed from Emily. “Knowing Matt I’m not exactly surprised he’s here, but what happened?”
Emily was now calm and collected, but still a bit unnerved. “Well that’s thing sir…”
“Please, just call me Bing.”
“Okay, well…umm, I don’t really know how to explain it. We were being attacked; it was just the two of us. Everyone else had taken off in the helicopter and…”
“They left you?”
“No, Matt jumped,”
“He jumped?”
“To save me,”
“From who,”
“A Houndoom, well Matt’s abductor really,”
“They’re just details Bing, please Emily go on,” Finch decided to jump in to the conversation.
“Well we were on the ground, we were about to have a battle. The Houndoom was charging at us, we both reached towards our belts. I released my Blastoise, I heard Matt whisper something and then he fell to the ground.”
“What did he whisper?”
“I can’t,”
“It’s okay, say it,”
“No, he whispered, ‘I can’t,’”
Both Bing’s and Finch’s eyes were suddenly widened. They were in shock, as if someone had just murdered the president.
“That’s terribly uncharacteristic of him, don’t you think,” Asked Dr. Finch,
“Yes and no, we may have created a monster,”
“Matt, a monster?” Emily had only known him for two days, but she felt as if she had known him for two years. “How could he possibly be a monster?!”
“Emily, I sense closeness between you and Matt, so I’ll tell you this. However, this doesn’t leave this room, Matt’s closest friends don’t even know.”
“Okay, I swear I won’t say anything, I promise.” Emily replied,
“What is this Bing, I won’t speak of it but I can’t imagine what it could be.” Finch was more curious than ever.
“The truth is, Matt has a dark past. He was 13 when he was selected to be one of the first 100 to come to Pokémon island, you were one of the first 100 as well weren’t you Emily?”
“Yes, I was,”
“Then you know we had monitored the first 100 for three years prior to their official involvement. We generally looked at people who featured a variety of special qualities. Some of what we thought would be the brightest minds in the world, some who had a remarkable talent in a certain skill, and some who had large amounts of promising characteristics. People were selected who had great compassion, great emotional strength, great courage, things like that. Matt had no courage, no confidence, no self-esteem, and no happiness. He was smart, but he was more of an over achiever. All he had were his grades, which were straight A’s but nothing amazing. He was depressed; he was collapsing in on himself. He had convinced himself that he would never be good enough for anyone, never be good enough for himself. He was putting so much pressure on himself to be great, that he had made it impossible for himself. When he was ten years old we first began to look at him because his emotions were so strong, all of his emotions. We didn’t eliminate him as a contender to be in the first 100 because we were curious how Pokémon would react to such negative emotions. We learned that Pokémon have incredible compassion. Matt grew off their compassion and his natural talent at battling to become who he is today. There isn’t much ancient literature on the Void Pendant, but one set of hieroglyphs says that the Void strengthens all emotions. This could also have affected him. Matt’s told me he had begun to have visions again, that plus the war, this was inevitable. We just don’t know how bad he’s going to get, or already is, this time.”
“Wow, I don’t know what to say,” Emily was stunned
“I know, it’s like you never would have guessed. He’s always been good at bottling things up. His friends have even known him to explode when that bottle gets to full. Don’t treat him any differently, act like I never told you. He’ll be able to tell if you’re treating him differently.”
“Okay, and I won’t tell anyone either,”
“If you do, it will destroy him. So thank you. So Finch, surely you have some comments on this.”
“For once I’m speechless. I think there’s nothing we can do, I don’t think he would want us to do anything but go along in our everyday business.”
“That I agree with you about. All we can do is hope.”
“So, what do you want me to do?” Emily was concerned, yet knew she had to focus on the true task at hand, the war.
“Actually, come with me please,” Bing stood up and Emily immediately did the same and began to follow him. They exited the room and walked down a long hallway until they reached a set of stairs. Emily realized how big this place actually was. The second floor of the headquarters was the living quarters. There were ten bedrooms, one for Mr. Bing, one guest room, and one each for Matt, Max, Ellen, Calum, Ryan, Brett, Crystal, and Ashton. There was also one large living area with a kitchen, a long dinner table, a very large couch and one even larger television. Bing led Emily to the guest room. She walked inside and saw the room was fairly simple. A medium sized bed, an armoire for clothes and personal items, and a nightstand with a digital clock.
“This will be your room for the time being, for your safety, as well as the safety of Matt, I am strongly suggesting you stay here. Feel free to decorate it anyway you want, I don’t really care.” Bing chuckled, but it was obvious he was troubled. He turned to the door and began to walk out.
“Wait!” Emily blurted out,
Bing turned around.
“I left my bag in Canalave; it’s at the Pokémon center. All I have are the clothes and my back and my Pokémon.”
“I’ll have Ashton and Max bring it back. They told me that whoever that man you were fighting had fled the scene and they couldn’t apprehend him. I’ve sent a team to investigate the building in which Matt and Ellen were held captive. Listen, I know it’s only 5 o’clock, but you’ve had a long day, please get some sleep. Oh, you’ll have a new Pokedex by the morning to.” Bing walked out the door.
Emily let out a sigh, she was confused and had no idea what was going on. Her life had suddenly spun out of control; someone she cared about was going through so much.
I’ve only spent two days with Matt; I shouldn’t care as much as I do. What am I supposed to do? Now I have this commitment not only to Matt but to everyone here, can I do that? I can, I know I can, I’m just not sure that I want to. I guess fate put me here for a reason. Bing was right, I need some rest. Emily crawled under the covers of her new bed and drifted off to sleep.
Bing returned to Matt’s bed in the infirmary. He and Finch were alone since Matt had still not awoken.
“Ellen has notified me that she gave away the location of her file,” Bing said in all seriousness to Finch.
“So is this location in danger?”
“No, she was smart enough not to hide it under her mattress.”
“So you know where it is then?”
“No, but I know it’s not here.”
“You were in the middle of explaining the files and why you need my help before this drama happened, would you please finish up Bing?”
“Well bottom line is the four of us are in possession of files that contain a
simple series of numbers that not only reveal the location of the vault but the numerical password unlocking it. We were instructed not to even look at the files, but to make sure it remains unknown and safe at all times.”
“What’s in the vault?”
“I have no idea, I would imagine every piece of information ever gathered on anything Pokémon related. Some things only my master knew, things he locked up before he died. We’re to only open this vault in times of pure crisis, and all four of us have to agree to it. We swore to die to protect the contents of the vault. I’m telling you all of this in case I don’t win my re-election as president of PIA. The new president would never listen to me; he would just think I would be trying to intimidate him. If there is a new president, he must know that this is a life or death matter and I know he would listen to you.”
“Understood,”
Max and Ashton walked up the stairs into the living quarters. It was 1 in the morning and they were exhausted. Since Ashton didn’t have her Fearow and Max’s Alteria was still recovering, they were forced to take a boat home.
“Here,” said Max handing Ashton Emily’s bag, “Would you mind putting this in the guest room with Emily?”
Ashton nodded because she didn’t feel like arguing. She turned down the corridor on her way to Emily’s room. She quickly and silently opened the door, placed the bag inside and walked into her room letting out a sigh of exhaustion as she fell on to the bed.
Max walked by the large couch in the living area as he was heading to his room. However, someone caught his eye. He turned and saw Ellen just sitting there in the dark, staring off into blank space.
“What are you doing up?” Max asked not really wanting an answer,
“Huh? Oh hey, you’re back. I couldn’t sleep, I’m just thinking.”
“What about?”
“I’m just worried, especially with all things that have happened within the past two days. I mean you nearly died, I was kidnapped and beaten, Matt’s now unconscious and no one knows why. Bing thinks his body just needed relief from the trauma that’s happened, so it shut down. He said not to worry, but that’s easier said than done.”
“I know it’s a struggle Elle, I do. But what else are we supposed to do?”
“I don’t know. Do you ever think about where you would be if you had never been sent here? What a normal life would have been like? What it would be like to just get up and leave it all behind?”
“I don’t have time to think about those things, we have a job and we do
it. It’s dangerous, but in a good way.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“I’m going to bed; wake me up if you need anything else okay?”
“Wake you up? Why would you want me to do that?”
“I care about you, and you’re a little stressed right now. I want to help if I can.”
“Just go to bed, you need sleep.”
“Fine, good night,” Max walked away thinking about all the things Ellen had
said. He didn’t even change his clothes when he got to his room; he just collapsed on the bed and fell asleep.
You care about me, huh? I’m more than a little stressed. I don’t want to think about Max right now, Ellen’s thoughts were spiraling, she was confused.
You don’t care about me the way I care about you. You never will, you’ll never see it either. Why did I let myself get so attached to you Max, why? I don’t know how much longer I can do this.
Ellen stood up and walked silently into her room. She changed her clothes; she put on a black long sleeve shirt and some dark grey jeans. She picked up her long, black overcoat that she almost never wore and wrapped it around herself. She grabbed her belt and wound it tightly around her waist. She reached for her travelling backpack; she hadn’t used it in almost over a year. She quickly packed some of her favorite clothes and other personal belongings quietly so no one would hear her. She threw the backpack on and walked quickly down the hall, down the stairs, down the hall, out the door. She was surrounded only by the woods, but she wasn’t afraid. She just walked. She walked on the dirt, with trees all around her. It was comforting knowing she had nothing to do, nowhere to go. She thought about flying home, home to Chicago with her mother, father, and younger sister. She was afraid to face her family, they were so proud of her. So she just walked, walked with her head down into the night, singing a song under her breath.
“I'm going away for a while
But I'll be back, don't try and follow me
'Cause I'll return as soon as possible
See I'm trying to find my place
But it might not be here where I feel safe
We all learn to make mistakes
And run
From them, from them
With no direction
We'll run from them, from them
With no conviction
'Cause I'm just one of those ghosts
Traveling endlessly
Don't need no road
In fact they follow me
And we just go in circles”
This chapter is like anything I've ever done before, and I've really enjoyed tapping in to the psyche of my characters. I hope things worked out well, so tell me what you think please. I hope to do more chapters like this in the future as things escalate in the story.
Oh, I can't take credit for that song or the lyrics.
