this thread is for posting what pokemon names are derrived from what.
ei: bulbasaur=dinsoaur with a bulb on it's back
Try to go in order from #1 to #493.
So let's start
 
Ivysaur

Ivy = form of poisonous plant
Saur = Dinosaur

Together it's: Poison Ivy Dinosaur
 
Lickitung

Licki = lick people
Tung = Tounge

Or the Lick in my Tounge *shudders, Dark Marc's anticipation make it Shudder :p*
 
squirtle
squirt: water spouting
le: (actually if you say squirtle, you her turtle, so thats kinda it) turtle
water spouting turtle
 
empoleon
emporer+napoleon(boneaparte)=empoleon

torterra
tortoise+terra/terrain=torterra

infernape
infernal/inferno+ape=infernape

piplup
penguin+plup(the sound a penguin makes)
 
Blastoise

Blast= probably referring to the cannons on it's back
toise= tortoise

Tortoise with water cannons on its back
 
Butterfree
Butter = Butterfly
Free = Free

Weedle
Wee = Wee like in little?
eedle = Needle
 
Pidgey:
Pigeon + Budgie

Pidgeotto:
Pigeon stuff

Pidgeot:
Pigeon with the word Jet phonetically incoroprated into the name

Rattata:
Rat + TaTa which is the general sound made by a small rat

Raticate:
Rat + Irraticate (To destroy)

Spearow:
Spear (weapon) + Sparrow (bird)

Fearow:
Fear + ow (from Sparrow)

Ekans:
Snake Backwards

Arbok:
Kobra backwards

Pikachu:
Japanese translation of Lightning Mouse

Raichu:
Japanese Translation of Thunder Rat

Sandshrew:
Sand + Shrew (small mouse like animal)

Sandslash:
Sand + Slash

Nidoran - Nidoking
All start with Nido (Phonetic sounding like needle) plus the suffix of the word.
Nidoran: Ran (Running related)
Nidorina/o: Refering to a ballerina for Nidorina, and just the masculine form for Nidorino
Nidoqueen: Queen
Nidoking: King

Clefairy:
Referring to the Clef from a musical standpoint, and then fairy.

Clefable:
Clef from musical standpoint + Fable (Tall Tale, Story)
 
Deoxys = Deoxyribonucleic acid

The double helix arms give it away too.

Regi = king in Latin

Do the math for Regirock, Regice, and registeel. Regigigas = King of Giants.

Most of the pokemon names I know are too obvious to mention.
 
Vulpix- Vulpes is latin for fox, and six, the number of tails it has.

Ninetails- He's got nine tails...

Jigglypuff- A puff that is jiggly (a little obvious, no?)

Wigglytuff- She is wiggly, and has a tuff at the top of her head.

Zubat- Had to look this up. Bat and Zubbato- which is a tool that forcibly pierces something.

Golbat- Gold and bat. Perhaps Ghoul and bat?

I'll let some others have a go, now.;)
