BW/BW2 Racial Drama?

So, we've all heard about the fiasco caused by Jynx's original appearance being uncanny similarity with Blackface actors. Critics tore Jynx apart when that whole ordeal began.

With the advent of 5th generation, there are two characters(so far) that I believe will set off another drama storm similar to the one that occurred with Jynx. They are Aloe and Iris.

I think Aloe is very characteristic of the Mammy archetype. She isn't necessarily a servent, but she does have the appearance of one based on her attire:

It is very similar to Hattie McDaniel's character of "Mammy" in Gone With the Wind:

Next, we have Iris. Iris can be described as a sort of wild child. She's the type of girl who likes to climb trees, swing from vines, and seems to be aggressive in certain situations. These aspects, coupled with her darker complexion might offend some and again, lead to more drama on the grounds that she may represent a "savage".

I, myself, don't believe these are intentional aspects of characters, rather products of innocent coincidence, or a cultural misunderstanding, as Japan may not be familiar with these cultural phenomena, just as Jynx was meant to represent Ganguro in Japanese culture, but when she came over to the US, viewers saw her design in a different light.

I'd like to apologize if I offended anyone in anyway with my post. These are simply observations of these characters that I believe could catch some flack from critics of the series.

im black and i like dahlia and aloe. iris can go fall off a tree. hate her hair and id go knock her with a berry then run off with her kibago. japan needs to see pokemon and people from americas point of view to. why can aloe be just a reg. gym leader huh? its just setting up a racial war all over again....

I don't mind this. Maybe America's changed, but I'm sure Japan is very aware of this, and so is PInternational(Or whatever it is now). I always thought Brock was black, same with Dahlia. Now that Iris and Aloe are obviously black, it just shows we have differences in skin color/races. Is it really that bad? I'm black also and I don't see what the problem was. And what was the problem with Jynx? I thought it was only the anime, but I don't know what that was about either.

it could go both ways and most people dont know about jynx sine they updated her. i still like aloe and that both she and dahlia have high rankings. hope theres more skin tones. b/w doesnt meant only black and white people!
also no offense was taken.

The issue with Jynx that got Pokemon in trouble is that she resembled an actor in Blackface.

And it's not that it's bad to have characters of different races! Please don't think that's what I'm saying, lol! I'm saying that the way these characters are represented that make them similar to racial imagery that have become stigmatized in our culture.

of course you arent. i get you. i hope we get more shades of people. most people in america have friends of literally all races. i do and were all fine with it. i just hope aloes voice isnt messed up as thatd start major conflicts. also props formaking the thread.

Iris will be fine, she's not really black and she might behave stereotypical, but she doesn't look like a tribes member. So I don't think people will make a big deal out of that.
With Aloe I think it will stand or fall with her behavior. If she behaves stereotypical, there will most likely be people complaining about it.

On the other hand, aren't these scenes still in popular American children's movies?:

Don't get me wrong, I love Disney movies. But I just don't think it's fair to ban something from a cartoon from Japan because it has a stereotypical depiction of a specific race. Small children won't even notice it any way.

Jynx is still trying to ruffle feathers.

- Look at HGSS's Jynx sprite animation.
- Now play Beyonce's 'Put a Ring on It' video on your laptop.
- Compare!

I swear Jynx is mimicking the video!

On a serious note, all this racial stuff is outrageous. If you want to find insult in anything, you'll find it. I mean, Americans could have been insulted by Lt. Surge's war veteran stereotype. Or women could have been insulted that no professor (up to now) had been a woman. Or guys could've been insulted that all the nurses in every game were female characters.

There are black characters in the game. So what? The real way to not be racist is to ignore their inclusion. It's as normal as adding an Irish character (where I'm from), or a British character, or an Australian character. It's ridiculous that an apron or a hairstyle is enough to set off the PC brigade.

no one can even come close to beyonce. jynx is not even close to me. also if aloe talks/asks stereotypical pokemon will face loads of charges and pointless stuff. i mean come on? just make characters of different races not stereotypical. why do they do it in the first place?

its not that the person is black. if a person of any race was given a weird voice or had their body look funny and sterotypical id be mad. if a person of a different shade was in a game, just leave them as, japan needs to see things from as many points of view as possible.

Frostwind, cartoons exaggerate the truth. This is what most racial stereotypes are, an extreme exaggerating of the things that strike people of different races as odd. Like skin colour, different facial features, different eating habits, behavior etc. These traits stand out, and the cartoonist makes these traits stand out even more. Because it's funny.

Why does race have to be such a problem? Why is it wrong to laugh at racial stereotypes?

I think anyone who would get angered about having two African American characters in a Pokemon game is having a slow news day.

Jynx was a Pokemon. I could see why some were offended by that.
However, these are human beings, and I don't see why there should be controversy over this.

and @Wolf616: I see what you're saying. However, at times it can get pushed over the edge a little bit, and that, is when it becomes offensive. There are, in fact, limits.

Every one has different limits, making it even more difficult to draw the line and say "this is acceptable, and this is not". Can you give me an example of something that you feel crosses the line?

I don't think art should be censored. And cartoons are a form of art. That, and I can't think of many stereotypes in cartoons that I personally feel are offensive. Except the ones that are clearly meant as propaganda, and even in the most extreme cases then I'm more likely to be slightly disgusted then truly offended.

I think it's hilarious that the Jynx thing escalated in a change of the pokemon's skin colour. Typical political correctness over-reaction. So black-coloured humanshaped pokemon aren't allowed in a KID'S game because some idiots think it'll insult people with a similar skin colour?

I'm a skinny white male. Maybe I should start a campaign to change Medicham's skin colour! :p

That made me laugh.
However, I do understand the point you're trying to come across.
Gah. That whole Jinx controversy was way over the top. Most of my african-american friends agree with me as well.

im ok eith it im just pointing out what others will dom i just dont see why cartoons have to use stereotypes. i just wanted to know. if it can be considered wrong dont do it, even if it doesnt seem wrong to me and you

thats what i think. i like the characters a lot and just as much as all the other new characters. and also to the guy who said idiot dont use it. its not nice or neccesary. just a waste of life and time.

I think its good that Nintendo is doing this. Showing more shades of people in the game is fine with me.

Even if her outfit does look like a stereotypical servant, look at her expression! She's tough and she'll whoop your butt and make you say sorry for bothering her. No, I wouldn't mess with Aloe, no way.
