BW/BW2 Racial Drama?

im ok eith it im just pointing out what others will dom i just don't see why cartoons have to use stereotypes. i just wanted to know. if it can be considered wrong don't do it, even if it doesnt seem wrong to me and you

If you can't do anything that someone might regard as wrong, you won't be able to do anything at all.

but there are limits. for example, an irish person with red hair is ok. them being lucky is kind of stereotypicial but theres no hard feelings. if he always acted drunk thats just cruel. i know they dont act like that but it doesnt make it sseem any less mean. im just pointing out that it could go either way and that i hope the anime doesnt screw it up.

Aloe looks fine to me, if a bit disproportional. I mean, really, the apron is ridiculous.

It seems to be a trend. I mean, look at the Miley-Cyrus-like female protagonist and her neck-breaking mass of hair!

Lol, you're right!

Really, though, younger kids won't even make much of them, so I don't think it would attract too much attention. Someone's said this already,

As long as they give her an established place in the world of Pokemon, it'll be fine. She's already a gym leader, so...

i dont see anything wrong with aloe. i dont think that race even remotely matters. why should it?
it is about time that we got a black character, though. we already have an asian(brock) and a hawaiian(pheobe or something like that), now we just need a lation.....but seriously y do people care about this?
ALOE IS AUNT JEMIMA!

I don't really see what's so bad about Aloe that would cause outrage....

in fact she's a Gym Leader and portrayed as person with power and knowledge. (as all gym leaders are) Isn't that a good thing?

Uhm, aren't all the characters meant to be Asian? I assumed that everyone was a Japanese kid. Since the game is made in Japan, and based off Japanese continents...

Aloe is one of my new favourite characters. I love her overall design. She looks like she could be a really nice person, but also fierce in battle. I can't wait to find out what type she is. :)

The issue with Jynx that got Pokemon in trouble is that she resembled an actor in Blackface.

And it's not that it's bad to have characters of different races! Please don't think that's what I'm saying, lol! I'm saying that the way these characters are represented that make them similar to racial imagery that have become stigmatized in our culture.

Im sry but, im black and that friggin SCARED me. Not totaly scared more surprised, but it was still creepy lol :)

ALOE IS AUNT JEMIMA!

Also that is VERY rude your just trying to start up another racial war again!! Mods pleaseee get rid of his post because someone tried to make a thread on that and people got Affended!!

dont start another racial war, it doesnt matter what race we are, or what we look like on the outside, but what we look like on th inside, that is the only thing that counts! (i know that was really cheesy)

I think that it is pointless to have another racial war, we are all friends, (most of us, anyway) does it really matter!

OMG a black character that looks BLACK!
If they call foul on this, I swear...
If they make a black person too "white" people would call racist, and if they are too "black" then they will still call racist. I remember Barbie made a black barbie that had a "white person's" hair and they got all sorts of problems. Its so hard to please everyone and maybe thats why it wasnt until gen 5 that we got a main black character.

I seriously don't care about the skin tones or whatnot. Its Pokemon for peeps sake. Im not surprised should one day there are complaints about Aloe or Iris's character. Maybe unlikely because nothing happened to Dahlia The Sinnoh Frontier Brain. Anyway, we should brace ourselves should it come to the same situation with the Jynx case.

wasnt dahlia black?
does it really matter?
offtopic, why is jynx racist but lombre isnt?

If they make a big deal about Aloe, they would have made a big deal about Brock owning a Ludicolo... yet Jynx was a controversy due to her appearance.

Anyone who does that is a derp, as worse has been done before and nothing happened.

i dont understand the lombre part. i thought it was just a kappa like golduck

person who said aloe was aunt jemima: that was really racist mean and just setting up a racial war thats really pointless
person who said the cheesy line: what he said. i know kids wont care but knowing something is wrong just eats away at me. it could go any way but im hoping pokemon wont screw up

I, myself, don't believe these are intentional aspects of characters, rather products of innocent coincidence, or a cultural misunderstanding, as Japan may not be familiar with these cultural phenomena, just as Jynx was meant to represent Ganguro in Japanese culture, but when she came over to the US, viewers saw her design in a different light.

Uh, I'd like to play Devil's Advocate for a second here. You see, blackface characters are rather commonly seen in Japanese pop-culture(ex: Mr. Popo). Jynx's design was probably very intentionally meant to invoke that image. But.....she wasn't, in anyway, meant to be racist. In Japan, blackface doesn't really carry any racist connotations, so Jynx's design wouldn't have been offensive. In the Western world; however, obviously it is a different story.

Brock is kinda obviously meant to be Asian. Well, more specifically Japanese. But of course, as a kid I always thought he was something else, like maybe mixed-race or something.

But yeah, I don't see anything wrong with Aloe's appearance. We sorta need more skin colors outside the "vaguely Caucasian/vaguely Asian" look that's been popularized by anime and manga.

I really don't get why people keep discussing this, Hell, I don't even know why there's a thread for it. What's the difference between black and white people? There's none. It's only realistic for Game Freak to make a black woman. I mean, why not? If there can be white people in the game, then there can easily be black people too.

What if I made a game where 95% of the characters were black? Would I be considered racist? If that's racist, then a majority of games are racist too, since I can't think of any game that's like that.

Time has changed. Obama is the president of the United States. If people can't stand black people in games, how in the world are they gonna stand black people in real life?
