Sell now, Buy back later?

Hi,

So, I pulled a Full Art N on my own and bought one for around $9 when NV first came out, after which I sold my extra for around $10.
Recently, I went and checked the going price on eBay for the card.. It's around $20.

Now, I am solely a collector and don't pay much attention to the playing card game. So, I really don't know what cards are "hot" for players. This brings me to my current predicament.

Do you think it is a good idea to sell my "hot" cards now, and then buy back copies in the distant future once the prices have dropped?

To continue with the FA N example: should I sell my FA N for $20 now, hoping that the price eventually drops and I can buy another NM+ copy for cheap?

Well, because N is such a good card an is highly played we could get a Lugia ex situation where it just stays expensive due to the amount of good condition ones. Although that's unlikely seeing as they print so many copies of everything.

If you pulled a FA N then I would keep it. You just can't beat the condition of a self pulled card most of the time. It depends how picky you are about your cards...I handle my personal collection with gloves so I'm on the paranoid side :D

If you want to sell I'd wait a little bit. I think the value of N will only go up as Worlds gets closer because people will want to have some "wow factor" in their decks.

I could be wrong though.

My main concern is will I be able to get another copy for cheap sometime in the future? If not, then selling the card isn't worth it. But if so, I've opened up a whole new market (at least, for myself) :D

You're right. I wouldn't sell it if I pulled it and it was pristine and didn't have another.

Depends.

Selling and rebuying is a tricky subject. If you sell on eBay or with PayPal you typically pay fees.

If you can buy the card back for less than the revenue you generate (after fees), then it might be worth it.

Other things to consider:
  • How much time will it take to sell this card?
  • Will the price go down in the future? (e.g. for playable cards, the answer is usually "yes")
  • How easily can the card be replaced? (consider factors like rarity and condition as well)
Personally, I do not hold onto playable cards (exceptions being Mewtwo EX FA or Shiny Catcher).

Although there is high demand for them now, they don't normally sustain the same value after rotation.

Since the new format after worlds is DEX-On. You could sell all cards that HAVE NOT BEEN REPRINTED IN THOSE SETS, and then buy back after they are no longer legal.

We don't know that. It's actually pretty likely it'll be NXD-On.

N will stay in format at least another year. Competitive players use N as it is a staple. Having it FA will be nice as some people prefer to have them FA. Ones it rotates out (in 2014) its prize will drop. IDK when will it top (if it hasn't already) but it will become cheaper after it rotates.

I'm no expert on selling and buying cause I always lose on those things... never been one to profit unfortunately and anything I sell, always less than my competition.

HOWEVER!!!

One day I saw Troll and Toad selling N's for 45$. Ebay were selling for 25-28. I sold mine to Troll and Toad for 22$.

Now they sell it for only 26$

I was so happy to get rid of a card to retail that had to drop the price down that quickly. They were probably like "Oh man we bought so many N's but the other stores are selling it for cheaper! We gotta lower the price! Man only a 5$ profit..." There's something really satisfying about that...

lol we don't know that either.

I would sell now. That's what I did with my Mewtwo FA EX and all my Pokemon pre rotation last year. Worked great.

And let's not forget that it can be reprinted in Freeze, as there's a Half Decks N that hasn't been printed yet

The scary thing is the amount Deoxys and Thundurus are going to cost in May. Ebay and Trollyourbank both seem to want 50$+ for a pre-order for both cards, time to go buy some blisters and pray! haha

The price will likely settle down though. Terrakion BCR was nearly $50 when it was released, but now it's down to $15. The Plasma Storm Random Receiver has dropped a lot as well. I sell all (most) of the Ultra Rares I pull at Prereleases and then buy them back about a month later. It's supply and demand; there's not a lot of them because the set was just released, so they're automatically more expensive.

Yeah I figure they will drop somewhat but who knows, mewtwo full arts are still going for 30$+ so I could see Thundurus and Deoxys keeping their value as well since Megalo Cannon won't make that large of an impact on the current metagame I don't think. I expect Thundurus Deoxys to be tier 1 and possibly win worlds, or at least some variation of it.

Yeah, I remember when the regular Mewtwos were like $70. Now they're like $20. If only I were smart back then, I could have made ~$50.

That's what I plan on doing, just turn and burn for a month and then quit haha.
