Mystery Author #7 said:A Midsummer Festival like no other
On a sunny, bright day in Flitter Town, the fairies were enjoying their Midsummer Festival, when Plick, one of the guards, spotted a prone figure outside of the castle. Racing toward it, he saw that it was a Fairy Warrior, one of the lowest ranks of King Twitter's army. The Warrior gasped out
"King Sink- attacked-overwhelmed- need help." Plick whirled around and took a horn from his coat. He sounded the call to battle. Within minutes , thousands of the King's finest were pouring out, with King Swit himself at the head.
"What is it, Plick?" he demanded.
"Sire, a Fairy Warrior has reported that King Sink has attacked our fairy forces in the East. They are being overwhelmed."
"I see," said the king. "Forward! We shall give these scoundrels a defeat!" They rode forward, taking out their toughest, strongest, and biggest Pokemon, including the king's own Golden Onix.
As the king rode off, Plick took the injured fairy to the castle hospital for the night. "You were very brave, coming here like that," he said. "I shall tell the king of your valiant performance."
"Thank you," the injured fairy gasped. Plick headed off to bed, for he had the night shift inside the castle.
………………………………………………………………………………………………...
Late That Night…
Walking down the corridor with his Growlith, Plick suddenly heard a slight thump. Growlith growled.
"You hear it too, Growlith?" Plick asked. He flew down the dark, shadowy corridor for silence, and peeked around the corner to see the injured fairy and a Mismagius tinkering quickly with a black sphere.
A bomb! thought Plick. The man and the Mismagius then placed the bomb in the cake for tomorrow's festival. Ingenious. When we cut the cake-BOOM! Up goes the castle, thought Plick. He rushed forward into the dark, shadowy room, but he didn't see the fairy's Mismagius near him, about to hit him with a knife. Suddenly, Growlith jumped up and knocked Mismagius' aim off, causing the knife to hit the bomb inside the cake.
Plick could hear the tick of the bomb from where he stood. He immediately started to dig for it with his hands.
"Stop him, Mismagius!" Yelled the man, and Mismagius began to prepare Its deadly black Shadow ball, but Plick yelled
"Growlith, flame wheel!" Growlith let loose with a torrent of fire, momentarily stunning both Mismagius and its trainer, and giving Plick enough time to grab the bomb and fly away, letting out all his pokemon as he did so; to keep the foe busy.
He flew through the shadowy corridor, whacking into low beams, hearing the bomb's tick-tick-tick, and exhausting himself. He didn't know what to do with the bomb.
As he flew out of the castle, he spotted the armies of King Swit and King Sink amassed in the distance. What if –Yes! That's it! He dove toward the armies, the bomb ticking in his hands.
One minute-50 seconds-20 seconds- He dodged arrows as he flew closer and closer- 10 seconds-5-4-3- now! He released the bomb... right onto King Sink's forces.
On the ground, a bad Fairy Warrior was hit in the head by the head by the bomb. The last thing he saw was 2-1- then - boom! King Sink's entire forces were obliterated by the spreading black orb.
………………………………………………………………………………………………......
Later, at the finally happy Midsummer Festival
"We found out that the "Fairy Warrior" was actually one of King Sink's forces," the king was saying in his Midsummer Speech. It was a bright, sunny day once more, and the fairies were about to enjoy a feast-minus the cake-with all their pokemon.
"It was all thanks to Plick here," said the king.
"Growlith and my other pokemon helped too," mumbled Plick, turning a beet red.
"Exactly! That's why you all will get Medals of Honor and become Advisors to the King! Now let us feast!"
Everybody cheered as the cooks brought in a table filled with delicious goodies.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
The fairies are having a grand time…but somewhere in the wastelands of the desert, King Sink still lives…
"Haha! They fell for my robotic decoy King Sink 2000! I live to fight again, and soon I will become the King of all Pokemon worlds and Fairy worlds!
"But king, we've lost all our army! How will we triumph with no army?"
"Do not worry, trusted advisor. We shall perfect our robots and storm the kingdoms!
So…King Sink lives to fight again. What will be the outcome? Will he destroy the kingdoms? Or will King Swit stop him?

"Here you are, Mr. Ketchum. Your Pokemon are fighting fit!" Nurse Joy handed the young trainer his Poke Balls. On vacation back in Kanto, Ash had just fought a rematch against Erika, Leader of the Celadon City Gym. The flower arranger proved to be a tough match, even for the veteran trainer from Pallet Town. Though he had a strong Monferno which should have all but guaranteed victory for him, the plethora of status ailments Erika's Pokemon were capable of inflicting proved to be too much for Ash to handle.
"Thanks, Nurse Joy," Ash said, accepting his Pokemon with a smile. He couldn't believe how much Erika had improved in the years he'd been gone. He also had a hard time believing how many status ailments his Pokemon had on them at any given time - he'd lost count after the first five. "Good thing Team Rocket interfered during my official battle and I got the badge anyway," the young man mused. "Who knows what would have happened if they hadn't?"
The Pokemon Center attendant smiled back at him. "We hope to see you again!"
Placing his Pokemon back on his belt, he turned back to his waiting companions, eager to resume the easy life now that his battle was over.
"Everything good now?" Brock asked, looking up from his magazine. Having family in Pewter City, the breeder had no problems agreeing to head back to Kanto with Ash for a chance at getting away from it all for one whole week.
Ash gave a thumbs up to the elder trainer and former Gym Leader. "Yep! Everyone's back in tip-top shape!" Pikachu leaped from the floor to his master's shoulder, happy to see him in good spirits after his loss.
A slender hand slipped into Ash's open palm, its fingers intertwining themselves with Ash's. "Are you really feeling okay?"
"Of course I am, Misty," Ash said, squeezing the young girl's hand. "Actually, I'm kind of psyched! Erika was a really tough opponent. I can't wait to challenge her again and actually beat her fair and square! Besides, it's not like I've never lost a battle before. I'm just gonna have to train harder so we can stand a chance next time!"
The young redhead smiled. "He sure hasn't changed much in the past few years..." When Ash stopped at the Cerulean Gym and asked Misty to be his guest for the next seven days, she couldn't say yes fast enough. It had been far too long since they had been together, and she wanted to stay by Ash's side as much as possible.
The three friends left the Pokemon Center, eager to take advantage of the daylight hours by doing some shopping at the world-famous Celadon City Department Store.
"Ah, you guys, I totally forgot!" Brock exclaimed suddenly. "I have to check in. I promised my parents I'd call in every so often. They're really excited to have me back in Kanto, you see. It's been a long time since I last saw them."
"Yeah, that's true," Ash concurred. "It's no big deal, man. We'll wait here for you."
"Oh, don't worry about it. Go on without me - I'll catch up. You two haven't seen each other in ages, either. I'm sure you guys have a lot of catching up of your own to do, eh?" Brock teased.
Sarcastic laughter from the boy with the girl on his arm. "Real funny. All right, just don't be too long or we'll end up heading back to Cerulean City without you!" Ash joked.
Brock raised his hand as if swearing an oath. "I won't be but a few minutes, I promise."
As he disappeared back into the Pokemon Center, Misty decided she did not want to squander what precious few minutes she had alone with Ash. She began to lead him away from the Pokemon Center, down the streets of Celadon City.
"So, what have you been up to?" Misty asked him.
"Ah, too much," Ash replied, not knowing just where to start. "Sorry I never tried to get ahold of you. How was Johto?"
"It's a beautiful place," she reminisced as they continued towards the department store. "I met a lot of people and learned a lot of new training techniques from the Gym Leaders there. Still... I was by myself for most of my time there. I... kinda missed you."
Ash blushed a bit at that. "R-Really? Well... I mean, I know I missed you, Misty... it just hasn't been the same since you left. Brock's been traveling with me nearly the entire time from the time you left. He's still part of my little entourage in Sinnoh." He squeezed her hand. "I thought about you, you know. Nights when we'd be out camping or something, I would always wonder to myself what you were up to... how you're doing... if you'd, you know... found anyone..."
Now it was Misty's turn to blush. She considered telling him about her brief fling with Falkner, and how she nearly didn't come back home after he asked her to marry him, but decided against it. "N-no... there isn't anyone like that."
"Oh. Well, I'm glad you're back," Ash grinned.
"Hey, guys, wait for me!" Brock yelled as he caught up to the two friends. "Sorry. My mom, she's a talker..." He stopped to catch his breath. "I didn't think you guys would get so far away."
Pikachu and the human trio resumed their walk towards the department store, discussing their Pokemon, their pasts, and plans for what they'd do once the vacation was over.
-
Just outside the city limits, another trio was making their own plans. The three of them hid in some foliage, plotting their next move.
"You know, I'm getting awfully tired of this," one of the trio, a female, said. "We've been at this for far too long... we never should have told the boss about Pikachu."
"That's not like you, Jessie," the woman's male partner said. "You're usually the one who's telling us to look on the bright side."
The third in the group, a talking Meowth, added his piece. "I dunno, James, the less Jessie's cookin' up schemes to get us hoyt, the betta." He fiddled with a device in his hand. "Looks like dey're inside the department store. Now, listen up! I've got an idea that'll blow yer minds..."
The two humans waited in anticipation for what Meowth had planned. They'd nearly exhausted every possibility; the well of innovation was all but dried up. They looked at each other, very much doubting that Meowth's latest plan would be as mind-blowing as he bragged.
Meowth brought the two humans in close. Barely over a whisper, he unveiled his latest plan. "Forget the flashy intro. Forget the high-maintenance disguises. Forget the motto. Let's just sneak in dere, pick Pikachu up, and run away." Jessie and James looked as if they might burst into laughter at that very second, but Meowth stopped them before they could so much as giggle. "Think about it. Even back in the day, we relied on machines to try to steal Pikachu. Seein' as we're still doin' it some three, four years later, it's safe to say that all dem have failed. So I got to thinkin' maybe we're goin' at it the wrong way? What if a simple snatch and run is all we need?"
Jessie emerged from the bushes and dusted herself off, more focused on getting done. "I suppose we never have tried to just pick it up and run, have we? Maybe a good old-fashioned pair of rubber gloves is all we need? We sure would save money on machines."
James handed her a pair of arm-length gloves from a box of materials, one of many pairs found along with different kinds of medicine. "Tell me about it. Plus, we wouldn't have to use half of this stuff after the landing. I'm surprised we aren't dead yet..." He stepped out from behind the bushes. "They still there, Meowth?"
"Yep," the Pokemon replied, without moving his eyes from the screen. "Let's move out, people!"
-
Meanwhile, Misty was showing off a dress to her male companions - a simple blue dress with a daisy pattern. "What do you guys think about this one?"
"Looks nice," Brock commented. "I like it."
"Yeah, Misty, blue really suits you," Ash added.
"Thanks. I think so too," Misty said, retreating into the dressing room to try on another outfit.
"Hey, Ash, check this out," Brock showed him a nice-looking pair of black slacks with a matching shirt/vest combination. "I bet you'd look pretty slick in these. Why don't you try them on?"
Ash sized up the outfit. Would Misty agree with Brock's judgment? Only one way to find out. "Yeah? All right, give 'em here. Pikachu, you stay with Brock. I'll be right out, okay?"
Pikachu nodded, leaping down from his perch on Ash's shoulder.
-
Unseen to the three teens and their Pokemon, Jessie, James, and Meowth had made their way to the young trainers' current location.
"There they are. It really works!" James was astonished at the accuracy of their device.
Jessie slipped on her electric-resistant gloves, making sure her arms were sufficiently protected. "Yeah, that worked, but do you think this will work? That Pikachu is pretty strong..."
"Well," Meowth began, scratching his chin, "You oughta be all right if he don't zap any uncovered part of ya body. Dose gloves are extra-strength resistant - the best money can buy! If dese don't work, nuttin' will. Hold him at arm's length and you should be fine."
"All right. You guys be ready with the cage once I get outside," Jessie instructed to the two men. I'm willing to bet he's not going to come quietly..."
As James and Meowth went to the planned meeting spot, Jessie did her best to appear normal on her search for Ash and his Pikachu. "Look at me. I stick out like a sore thumb. Really shouldn't have worn the uniform..." She continued her conversation with herself. "And these gloves... geez, could it be any more obvious? How did I end up on snatch duty, anyway? If this doesn't go exactly as planned, so help me, they'll be sleeping with one eye open for a month!"
Fortunately for Jessie, she spotted her charge about 50 meters north of her current position, inside a clothing store. "All right, there it is, as planned. I'll just run up, and...!"
Quick as she could, she ran over to Pikachu, scooped him up into her hands, and fled the store before Ash had finished changing.
Unfortunately for Jessie, Misty had chosen that exact moment to step out of her changing room. "Stop, thief!" Misty cried, giving chase after Jessie. "Ash, Jessie just snatched Pikachu!"
"What?!" Ash exclaimed, bursting through the door of the changing room half-dressed. Spotting the female Rocket, he wasted no time in giving his order. "Pikachu, Thunderbolt! Strong as you can!"
Pikachu was already two steps ahead of Ash's order. He'd been zapping his heart out from the moment he realized he'd been swiped, but the normally life-threatening surges of electricity he loosed were reduced to a strong vibration to Jessie's protected hands and arms. Despite Meowth's claim that she would be completely guarded from Pikachu's electricity, the vibrations were so strong that she had a hard time holding onto him, and nearly clutched the rodent against her chest to keep him from squirming away before remembering Meowth's warning about keeping Pikachu at a safe distance.
Misty continued to chase Jessie on foot, shouting commands to Pikachu that he was already following - "break free," "Thundershock," and the like, as well as requesting Pokemon assistance from anyone who could help. The elder girl proved difficult to pursue; despite being burdened by a rodent fidgeting like he was being taken to be executed, Jessie did not seem to slow down in the slightest.
Before long, Misty found herself trailing farther and farther behind, and she chastised herself for not bringing her Pokemon with her before she ran off. As Jessie disappeared through the front doors, Misty cried for assistance one last time before falling to her knees, completely drained. "I failed..."
No sooner had she said that, a scream that clearly belonged to Jessie was heard just outside the building. The doors burst open with an enormous gust of wind, and Pikachu himself went sailing through the air back into the store before being caught in a flash by... something, Misty wasn't sure what it was. The figure that had caught Pikachu had landed, placing the small yellow rat on the ground. Misty then saw what Pikachu's assistant was: a Pidgeot. It stood at the entrance of the department store as its owner came in to gauge the situation.
"Excellent work, Pidgeot," the young man praised his Pokemon. Slipping his hand into his pocket, he pulled out a small cookie and fed it to the bird, which ate it happily.
Misty went to thank the Pidgeot and its trainer for their assistance, but froze when she saw her savior's identity.
The Pidgeot's owner was the first to speak up. "Misty! Oh, it's been ages!" He held the young lady in an embrace. "Wow, I didn't expect to see you here. Wait, does that mean that this is Ash's Pikachu? I haven't seen him in years! Is he with you? Wow, I can't believe it's really you, Misty..."
Misty somewhat reluctantly pulled herself away from the young man. "Hello, Falkner..."
Falkner looked a bit hurt. "What's the matter? You don't seem to happy to see me."
"Don't be like that, Falkner. What are you doing here?"
"Well, I was actually on my way out. You see, I heard that they sell excellent Pokemon food here. I came here on Pidgeot so I could check it out. I picked up a few supplies, left the store, and brought Pidgeot back out to take me home. Just as soon as I took off, who should come running out of the store but one of those Team Rocket scoundrels, carrying a crying Pikachu, no less! A couple powerful Gust attacks later, the lady's gone, Pikachu is safe, and who should I run into but you! Surely this is some sort of sign that -"
"I'm not having this conversation with you, Falkner," Misty said plainly. "You have my gratitude for saving Pikachu, but just because you happened to meet me here doesn't mean that we're meant to be together. I... don't love you. Okay? That's it. End of discussion."
Without another word, Misty scooped Pikachu into her arms, turned around, and returned to her friends, leaving the bird trainer and his Pidgeot behind.

A short time after being reunited with his partner, Ash invited his two human companions to dinner to unwind after a tedious day.
"You know I'd like that, Ash," Misty accepted gladly.
"Yeah, Ash, same here. You think we'd ever say no?" Brock added before glancing at his watch. "But... before we do, I should really give my mom another call. It's possible she heard about the commotion earlier today, and it'll let her rest easy knowing that I'm safe, you know?"
"I hear ya," Ash agreed, fully understanding the joys of parental worry. "We're going to the fountain. We'll meet you there, okay?"
"Got it. See you then."
Brock separated himself from the group, turning toward the city limits. Once he was out of sight, he took a small phone from his pocket. He dialed a number, the irritated look clear on his face.
"This is Brock. Is this your idea of a joke? It has to be. I didn't think anyone was that stupid, but Jessie and James have got to be the two biggest imbeciles on the planet." A pause. "Don't you pin this on me! I did what I was ordered! I picked up the tracking device at the location and stuck it in his backpack... how should I know if it's working or not?! He said he was going to the fountain. He hasn't left the city yet. He'll be eating at one of the restaurants here later." Another pause. "Look, if you want that, it'll cost you double. I can't risk being found out. ...Fine. Brock out."
In a tall building in Saffron City, Giovanni hung his head and sighed. "Double, he says. Sheesh."
Mystery Author #9 said:“Hey Nurse Joy, will you please take care of my Pokemon?” Without even waiting for an answer, the young trainer dropped an armload of Poke-Balls into the agitated nurse’s arms and hurried away. Joy rolled her eyes as she deposited the balls in the healing machine and a beeping sound signaled the start of the healing cycle.
Pokemon Center. To trainers, the name meant a place to take a much-needed dosage of rest and relaxation after a long day of battling. To Pokemon, it meant a place to be revived and refreshed after taking on the full heat of battle. To the hundreds of Joys in charge, it meant work. Ask any Joy however and she will tell you that there was no better job in the world. Nursing, as a common talent, ran in the veins of every Joy.
But the job did not go without its share of downsides. Nurse Joy no longer existed as a name, but as a title. Every Joy was just like the others, with minor differences here and there. The feeling was an empty one, to be loved or hated as a whole and not as one. Having such a large family made Joy feel cramped and nearly non-existent. As a result, Joy’s social life had practically come to a halt and she was known more for her occupation than the person she was.
Joy sighed as she looked out the window at the heavy rain pouring down. She switched all of the lights in the center off and walked slowly out the door. She was about to close and lock the door when something stopped her. She wasn’t quite sure what it was but her sixth sense was alerting her of something. Then she heard it; a sort of pitter-patter on the wet sidewalk. It was impossible to see clearly through the storm but the silhouette of a girl running through the rain towards her, appeared dimly before her eyes.
A hood shaded the girl’s eyes and her cloak danced in the howling wind. The girl’s being seemed to Joy as more obscure than material. Her skin was like a pale flame that danced in a ghastly manner across her being. She stopped in front of the nurse, her lips set in a grim line. Joy tried to choke out words but the girl motioned with a wispy finger for her to be silent. Then she smiled. As if from the air itself, she produced an object and set it gently down on the sidewalk. Then, as soon as she had come, she vanished into the darkness.
Joy lingered where she stood in the doorway for a moment in shocked bewilderment before the pounding rain on her head woke her from her daze. She wondered what that had been all about. She considered the possibility that she had been daydreaming or perhaps had fallen asleep entirely for a half-moment; she felt exhausted.
Then she remembered the object that the girl had placed on the ground. This seemed to a foolproof way to test whether what she saw was valid and so she grabbed a flashlight and groped around on the ground for it. It was caked in earth and dirt, but there was no mistaking that it was a Poke-Ball.
Joy looked curiously at the ball. A bit reluctantly, the nurse brought it inside. After she had rinsed it off with some hot faucet water, she placed it in the healing machine with the other five balls that the first trainer had given her, which were halfway through their cycle.
Joy looked out the window once again at the stormy mess outside. She always tried to avoid having to travel in a storm, so she decided it best to sleep at the center. As she cuddled up on the couch, she grumbled to herself. As if having to spend the whole day in the same cramped place wasn’t enough. She wasn’t sure how long she was asleep, or whether she had fallen asleep at all, before a strange noise made her sit up straight. It sounded like the microwave if she ever accidently put a fork or spoon inside; a sort of popping metal sound.
It wasn’t until just then that she noticed an ominous, green light being emitted from the healing machine. She stepped cautiously closer and realized that the popping sound was likewise coming from the machine. Suddenly, sparks began to fly across the room and the metal lid of the machine began to shake violently. In horror, she yanked the plug from its outlet and it immediately flickered off. Smoke billowed from the machine and she could tell by the red shimmer on the lid that it was smoldering hot. It took only a few minutes for it to cool down, however, and then all returned to normal.
Taking a pair of rubber gloves, she opened the machine. The five poke-balls that were given to her by the first trainer were black as charcoal and still smoking. The sixth, however, was cold as ice to her touch. Stunned, she dropped the ball to the ground. It landed upon the white button on its side and instantly, the ball opened through the middle and a bright light was emitted.
The light was blinding, much more so than any normal Poke-Ball. In a moment, the brightness faded, and in its place, a small creature, wrapped neatly in ribbons, hovered motionless in the air. Joy gasped at the sight of Jirachi.
The small Pokemon opened its heavy eyelids slowly and looked up into Joy’s astonished face. Using its telekinetic powers, it unraveled the ribbons around its body and flew about the room. It spoke to Joy through her mind, “Wow, it sure is nice to get outside of that Poke-Ball. It is so cramped in there. I like this place; it’s so open and cheery,”
“Jirachi?” The nurse asked, flabbergasted, “What are you doing here?”
“Oh, that,” Jirachi replied, “I am a member of the legendary council in the Alpha Realm. I have been sent here by the noble passage of Arceus and have come to fulfill your dreams because we have heard your thoughts from above. For the next three days, I will be your relentless servant. Every day, you will be granted one wish. That means you only get three so remember to choose wisely. The wish will only last until the end of the day. So what’ll it be? What’s your first wish? Oh, and because I know you’re going to ask, you can’t wish for more wishes so don’t even try it.”
At first, Joy was too shocked to speak. What on earth was one to do when she could have three of anything she wanted for a whole day each? She pondered over this for a moment before coming up with a solution. She needed to think logically about this. She looked at the wall clock; it was eleven thirty. That meant that if she made a wish now, she would only have thirty minutes to enjoy it.
“Well…it’s really late,” She yawned, “I think that it would be better if I made my first wish in the morning.”
Jirachi yawned with her and nodded its head. Thoroughly exhausted and still in a state of shock from the recent happenings, Joy collapsed on the couch, intending to think over her decision. Instead, she ended up falling into a deep sleep and didn’t awake until long after opening time.
When she did awaken, she found a handful of trainers hanging out outside, waiting for the center to open. She poured herself a cup of coffee, and after she had changed, she let the people inside. Throughout the morning, she was kept very busy. So much so that by noon she had forgotten about Jirachi altogether, who was resting inside its Poke-Ball on the counter.
When the last of the trainers had left, and all of the Pokemon that she had kept overnight had been returned to their owners, she noticed that one Poke-Ball remained. Seeing it made her instantly remember Jirachi and quickly popped open the ball, allowing a dreary-eyed Pokemon to tumble out on the center floor.
“Ouch! Oh, hi, good morning,” It said groggily.
“Good morning,” Joy replied, “I think I know what my first wish will be.”
“Oh?” Jirachi said, rubbing the sleep from its eyes, “Alright, shoot.”
“Okay, here goes,” Joy said, excitement in her voice, “For the rest of the day, I wish that people would show me some more respect. I don’t want people to treat me like a robot to heal their Pokemon. Today, I want to be a person. That is my wish.”
Jirachi look at Joy quizzically. It shrugged, and summoning its powers, it began to soar through the air, sprinkling a beautiful dust upon the nurse’s head. Then the entire being of the wish granting Pokemon began to glow and Jirachi vanished, but the sound of its voice still rung in Joy’s mind.
“Now, I have fulfilled your wish. I must go now and attend to other business, I will return tomorrow morning, enjoy your wish!” And with that, the sweet voice faded, and Joy was left alone in the Pokemon Center lobby.
For a long while, it seemed like an ordinary day and Joy was beginning to wonder whether Jirachi had granted her wish at all. She had spent the next hour straightening the empty dining room, which was sure to be full presently. It wasn’t long before a female trainer strolled into the center.
“Hello Ms. Joy, I have a favor to ask you,” The girl looked meaningfully at Joy, “Could you please take care of my Pokemon for me? You see we’ve been battling all morning and I would be very grateful.” It was the same routine for the rest of the day. She was suddenly treated with a level of respect that she had never known before. She felt wonderful. She finished off the day by closing the center early and went to the theater for a movie.
When she got back late that night, she lay awake wondering what her next wish would be. She had already used one up and the day had gone by so fast. She had two wishes remaining and she knew she had to make them count. With this in mind, she fell into a deep sleep. The next morning went by in the typical way. She fixed herself a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal and sat down at the kitchen table. Jirachi landed gracefully on the seat beside her, a broken piece of cookie in its hands.
“So…” The wish granting Pokemon said as it enjoyed its snack, “Have you decided on your wish for today?”
“Yes I have,” Joy replied, pouring herself a mug of coffee, “Today, I want to be appreciated. I don’t want the name Joy to be used as a title, but as a name. Until the end of the day, I want to be the only Nurse Joy.”
“Alright, if you’re sure that’s what you want,” Jirachi replied. She scattered once again the magic dust over the nurse. When it cleared, Jirachi was no where to be found. “Good Luck,” Its sweet voice rang through the air.
“Thanks,” Joy thought to herself, “But today, I won’t need it.”
It wasn’t until she had about four steps left to go that that confidence began to fade. An enormous crowd, like that seen in the bleachers at the Pokemon League, was bustling around in front of the center. With some difficulty, she made her way through the back door without attracting too much attention.
She opened the front door from the inside and allowed a large portion of the crowd into the lobby. She learned through bits and pieces of the din that many of the people there had made their way across the region, from homes in cities all over Sinnoh. Overnight, the demand for nurses to heal Pokemon had been multiplied hundreds of times and now many people held up large sums of money, begging for her services.
She spent the remainder of the day claiming Pokemon from desperate trainers; the same thing that she had done for years. Yet, something felt very different. Of course, she didn’t accept the money, but the great amount of respect and honor shown to her made her feel good. No longer was the favor that Joy did for the community something demanded, but something begged for.
The minutes went by like seconds that day and soon it was midnight. Finally, after the last of the customers had left, she collapsed into an armchair and sighed. Later that night she was awakened by a loud noise shaking the center, the door flying open, and Jirachi darting inside. Joy immediately saw the fear in its eyes and demanded what the matter was.
“You have to hurry!” Jirachi blurted, taking hold of Joy’s hand and tugging her toward the door, “Sunyshore City needs you! Team Galactic is here! Volkner is trying to hold them off but he can’t! You have to help him!”
“What?” Joy cried, thunderstruck, “Are you crazy? What am I supposed to do? I can’t stop Team Galactic! Volkner is the strongest battler around, if he can’t beat them than I definitely can’t!”
“But he can’t do it alone!” Jirachi screamed to her, pulling her closer and closer to the doorway, “This is the same thing that you’ve always done! You help people in need and Sunyshore needs you right now!”
“No!” Joy shot back, tears welling up in her eyes, “I’m done! I won’t spend the rest of my life helping people that apparently could care less whether I did or not! Heck, it took you coming down from the Alpha place or whatever for me even to get the appreciation that I wanted for two measly days!”
“But you’re missing the point!” Replied Jirachi, whom had given up on taking the nurse by force and now hovered before her, “You don’t do what you do because you think you will be worshipped and esteemed! You do it because it’s the right thing to do! And in the end, that’s all that matters, not what others think of you.”
Both became suddenly silent. The last of Joy’s tears fell with a plop to the floor before she lifted her head to look with a sad smile at Jirachi. The wish granting Pokemon smiled back. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you,” It said.
Joy nodded. Absorbing Jirachi into its Poke Ball, she hurried out the door and into the dark night outside. The scene that met her as she rounded the bend into the heart of the city made her blood run cold. Two truckloads of Galactic Grunts were running wildly around and terrorizing the city. The brilliant glare of the bulb inside the lighthouse that towered over her suddenly flickered and went out as a Toxicroak accompanied by another Grunt smashed it with its toxin-infested knuckle claws.
A few blocks away, Volkner was locked in combat with Galactic Commander Saturn and his Toxicroak. It became quickly apparent that with the element of surprise, the latter of the two had gained a quick lead and now held it tauntingly out of Volkner’s reach. The Sunyshore Gym Leader had already exhausted his Raichu and Ambipom and was left with his Luxray.
“Give it up Volkner!” Saturn laughed with malice, “Sunyshore City will soon belong to Team Galactic, and all that is up to you now is whether you and your people leave alive!”
“Your as disgusting as that demon you call a Pokemon Saturn!” Volkner growled, “I would never surrender to you!”
“Then it ends here my friend!” Saturn hissed, “Toxicroak, use Poison Jab on that pest and finish him off!”
The frog Pokemon leapt directly towards Luxray, Knuckle Claws extended. In mid leap, Toxicroak was blown back towards its master as if by a bomb. Both trainers turned to see Joy standing beside Blissey, whom was recoiling from an Egg Bomb attack. After a moment of silence, the commander suddenly burst out laughing.
“A Nurse Joy? Really Volkner, is that what your measly city’s defenses have been reduced to? But then again, this Nurse has guts, that’s not something you see in the average Joy. Perhaps, you would consider joining our Galactic forces?”
“Like I would even think about helping you losers!” Joy replied with a harsh laugh, “Now, I think its time I showed you what a real Joy can do! Jirachi, use Psycho Boost!”
Obediently, Jirachi, whom had been hovering behind the nurse’s head, released all of its powers into a Psycho Boost attack, hurtling Saturn, Toxicroak, and a large group of other Galactic members to the earth. The astonished grunts rose achingly to their feet and upon seeing the legendary Pokemon hovering before them, they quickly turned tail and left their commander standing alone in the city.
“Impressive,” He said, cringing in pain as he stood, “Team Galactic is not an organization for fools, we know when we’re beat. Sunyshore has seen the last of Team Galactic, but surely, Sinnoh is not through with us!”
With that, he followed the rest of his team through the gate of the city. Joy let out the breath that she had been holding in. She had done it; she had defeated Team Galactic. She looked around for Jirachi but the wish-granting Pokemon had vanished. No doubt it had returned to the Alpha Realm. Joy smiled. She had only gotten two of her three wishes, but what she had needed most she had gotten herself.
From its hiding place behind the Pokemon Center, a girl with a dark hood draped over her eyes, smiled with her. Then, with a flash of light, the being of the girl transformed into that of a large white and gold, four-legged being and disappeared into the sky.
“Your as disgusting as that demon you call a Pokemon Saturn!"
Mystery Author #10 said:Child of Destiny
It took me five years to reach this point, but my life’s goal was soon within my grasp. ‘The Green Destiny’, ‘Vicis Viator’… Or ‘Celebi’, as it’s more commonly known; this was the place it could be summoned.
Standing on the border of Azalea Town, I popped Xatu out of its ball. It stared at me as it always does, and I stared back. They say that Xatu have the ability to see the future. I caught Xatu specifically for this, as a kind of experiment. Did it see my destiny clearly, or did it just see a blur? I returned Xatu to its ball, and proceeded into the darkness of Ilex Forest.
It was the middle of the day, but the Ilex Forest always looked the same. The trees clustered to form a sun-blocking canopy, keeping the forest submerged in a permanent night. It was the perfect place for a Time Machine, the perfect habitat for Celebi. In this darkness, my body glowed with a faint purple aura; Xatu kept me protected from the wildlife with its powers. I had memorized the route, and my first obstacle had come before me. A special type of tree grows right here on the path; A brittle, thin tree that grows faster than bamboo. These trees can be cut down by any Pokemon knowing the move ‘Cut’. So as planned, I pulled Ninjask out of its ball to chop down the tree. It sliced apart like paper, giving us entry towards the shrine.
I don’t know what I was expecting, a grand and beautiful masterpiece glistening underneath a spotlight of sun perhaps? But no, the shrine was so underwhelming I wasn’t even aware it was the shrine at first. It was shaped like a bird table on four legs, a miniature house with no windows. The front had a door shaped like wooden blinds, and the roof was pointed. It was old and withered; part of the blinds like structure on the front had been broken.
I stood with my arms against the shrine, it was surprisingly clean. The area was eerily quiet, no wild Pokemon, not a flower or weed on the grass surrounding it. In this position, I chanted.
“Hear my plea,
Oh merciful Celebi,
I am a child of destiny,
Elegant and beautiful traveller of time—
With your powers I beg you bless me,
Oh merciful Celebi,
Hear my plea.”
Silence. I looked over to my watch, 2:27 PM. It was not right; Celebi only comes at a transitory period in time! I hit myself for my foolish ways, and left the shrine to return at midnight.
Despite the eternal darkness of Ilex Forest, the screeches of the Spinarak and the skittering of the Paras were more abundant at night. Xatu protected me once again and Ninjask sliced apart the new tree. The shrine waited for me in the parting, with a lifeless welcome.
“Noctowl.” I commanded, and the Pokemon erupted from its ball in a small feathery flurry. It hooted at me, and stared blankly in a trance. Noctowl were naturally attuned to time, I had trained it to alert me when it struck midnight.
I stood with my arms on the shrine, in the preparatory position for a good few minutes before Noctowl hooted. The chant I had memorized came out of my lips almost instinctively,
“Hear my plea,
Oh merciful Celebi,
I am a child of destiny,
Elegant and beautiful traveller of time—
With your powers I beg you bless me,
Oh merciful Celebi,
Hear my plea.”
A second disappointment rained down on me, as nothing happened. So deeply into denial, I refused to believe it was a myth. Years I had spent searching for this, so in a moment of madness I pulled open the doors on the front of the shrine.
It was empty, a hollow box. I climbed onto the sturdy structure, careless of whether it would break. Crawling inside, I shut the door on me, and I sat within, waiting.
“Hear my plea,
Oh merciful Celebi,
I am a child of destiny,
Elegant and beautiful traveller of time—
With your powers I beg you bless me,
Oh merciful Celebi,
Hear my plea.
Hear my plea,
Oh merciful Celebi,
I am a child of destiny,
Elegant and beautiful traveller of time—
With your powers I beg you bless me,
Oh merciful Celebi,
Hear my plea.”
I repeated the chant over and over, curled up inside this shrine in the middle of Ilex Forest. Looking back, I can never fully explain why I did such a strange thing. Perhaps it was out of sheer desperation, after having searched for so long… Or perhaps it was a force beyond my control. As I repeated the chant, I kept myself motivated with memories from the past five years.
First I searched for the Pokemon named Jirachi, the Wishmaker Pokemon. After one whole year of searching my home region of Hoenn, I was sorely disappointed to discover that Jirachi appears only once every 1000 years, and I’d missed the boat. It was shortly after however, I learned of Celebi, the time travelling Pokemon. Using its powers I could make my own wish come true by changing the past.
The second year I spent travelling to the remote and barren region of Orre. There I found the ancient ‘Relic Stone’, built in honour of Celebi. I learned that a flute was capable of summoning it, so I learned how to play… I built flutes from the wood of special trees; I borrowed ancient relics and played them at the stone… But never did I ever catch a glimpse of Celebi.
Finally, I was drawn to the Ilex Forest in Johto. The Shrine of Celebi is said to be a place where it can be summoned. Sitting in the tiny booth, my back began to ache, but I persisted on repeating the chant.
At one point, I fell asleep… Or at least it felt like a dream. I was recounting the events of my childhood that had motivated me to start this quest, when suddenly, I was there.
“Tommy, would you like some lunch before we go to the opening?” A woman talking to her son, his father standing beside them. Me and my parents, 15 years ago.
I was standing in the middle of a pathway, awestruck. Slowly it felt more real, and I realized I wasn’t curled up in a ball inside the shrine in Ilex Forest anymore. Mauville City, Hoenn, the place it all started. I watched in awe as my family walked away from me, and stared at the young version of myself. He looked up, and with a pang of terror I followed suit.
“Absol…”
The Absol peered down over the town from atop one of the buildings. It stared straight down at the young me, then right at me before walking away.
“Mummy what was that?”
No one saw it, except me… Well, us. Absol, the heralder of disaster.
Celebi was nowhere to be seen, and as such I had no idea how long I had in this past-world. Getting a grip on myself, I decided I need to hurry to make my dream a reality.
New Mauville they called it, a futuristic utopian city built underground. That was where I had to go to, and that was where I went. Unfortunately for me, they weren’t letting anyone in before the grand opening ceremony. Luckily however, Xatu was with me, and entrance was but a Teleport away.
It was dark inside, the power hadn’t been switched on yet. Workers were running around frantically making sure everything was spick and span for the grand opening ceremony. Wattson, the town Gym Leader and co-creator of New Mauville strode down the main aisle to the entrance, ready to make his speech. I was hiding behind a turbine, and quickly ran out the moment he passed.
I needed to prevent it, I wasn’t sure how but I didn’t have much time. Clearly the workers where distracted by the preparations, because getting into the Power Room wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had expected. However when I walked into the hall, it was far more peaceful than I had imagined. Quiet.
The room was filled with giant tubes, and in these tubes were various electrical Pokemon… Magnemite and Voltorb mainly, wired up to the tubes having their electrical energy sucked out of them. My shock quickly turned to horror however, the Pokemon were clearly being used against their will.
“This is… Inhumane.”
“What is?”
I turned, a man in a cliched labcoat and large glasses stood behind me.
“They’re only Pokemon my boy, and these specific ones are designed for this purpose.”
I grew angry,
“You’re wrong. Pokemon aren’t designed for anything.”
“How can you say that, when Magnemite are electrical devices? They are floating spherical electromagnets, and Voltorb imitate Pokeballs. How can they be natural?”
“They’re Pokemon. If you knew the mystical abilities Pokemon possess, these would seem very natural indeed.”
“Mystical abilities? They’re nothing but tools for human desires!”
That uncontrollable feeling came over me once more, as I walked away to do something quite drastic. I smashed open an emergency casing on the wall, pulling out an axe.
“Don’t do it boy. Hundreds of people are out there, you’ll ruin their day and you’ll be sent to prison. I know who you are.”
I smashed open one of the tubes, cutting down the wiring. A weak looking Magnemite fell to the ground with a metallic thud, freed. I smashed open another, and then another. The sound of shattering glass and the repressed anger deep within me were released in tandem. The primal emotions that flew through me took over, I wasn’t Tommy anymore… I was a tool of destiny.
When I reclaimed self control, an alarm was sounded. The man in the coat was lying on the floor cowering, his hands bloody from the glass shards. His hand had pulled down an alarm,
“You stupid boy. What have you done?!”
A rampaging swarm of electrical Pokemon flooded New Mauville. By now the first few guests were walking in. The angry and confused Pokemon flew around the now-dystopian underworld, electrifying innocents in a burning flash. As I staggered out into the main area, I stared in horror as I watched my own self as a child running away. My father was lying on the floor, smoke rising out of his scorched back. A Magneton with vengeful eyes hovered over to my mother.
“Don’t touch him!”
A scream. She fell to the ground in a flash of light I never forgot.
“No!” I muttered in disbelief, before roaring, “Noooooooo!!!”
I watched as my terrified child self was dragged away by the crowd. I collapsed onto my knees, tears streaming down my face. The sounds around me faded away slowly, and everything started to waver as though it were a dream. Everything turned green, the giant iron structures turned into trees, and the shining floor became dark grass. I was lying before the shrine in Ilex Forest, and standing within the glowing parting of the doors was Celebi itself.
My soul became strick with an indescribable feeling of awe at the sight of it. Its huge blue eyes and frail gentle form shone wondrously. The Pokemon stared into me,
“Child of destiny indeed you are,
Your purpose it was to fulfil the task.
Do not persist in chasing the star,
You should know now that you can’t change the past.”
Its last few words faded out with the eerie green light, leading me away into the world of dreams.
