This thread is so great. I love old Pokémon sprites with all of my heart.

Looks like this one just got worse.
At it's best in gen. 1, at it's worst in gen. 3
Also, it keeps getting higher up.

Personally, I love how some of the backsprites changed from RBY to GSC:

Charmeleon (The horn on its head changed, obviously.)

Kabutops (The back plates changed. It also gained a horn extension to its head.)

Arbok (Patterns on the back? What?)

I don't feel like posting all of their sprites, sorry.

The thing I like about Arbok's sprites is that the different patterns make sense:

It is rumored that the ferocious warning markings on its belly differ from area to area.

Platinum Ninetails is my favorite -- DP looks like it's head/neck was smushed down. Both have nice, dynamic poses though.
