This thread, as the name implies, is dedicated to the upcoming Star Wars movie - Episode VII - as well as the new trilogoly and related media such as spin-off movies and books and the TV show "Star Wars: Rebels".
Here you can share you thoughts, opinions and expectations (or frustations) about them.
Note - as time goes by, namely after the release of Episode VII, it will include Episodes VIII and IX. Also, the news about "Rebels" and movies will be posted in this thread.

As a "bonus", you might answer the following quiz (the answers may include characters from comic books, other shows and media):

1 - Who is your favorite character in the Star Wars universe and why?
2 - Would you like to be a Jedi, a Sith or something else? Why?
3 - What would be your species?
4 - Which powers and/or weapons would you like to have/learn?
5 - If in question 2 you've answered Jedi or Sith, would you like to have a certain Jedi or Sith as your master? Why? In other cases, would you like to have a partner/buddy to work with? Also why?
6 - What's your favorite ship?

I'm really looking foward to Episode VII. I've read in the news section of "Wookiepedia" (linking to a site about TV shows) that the actors who've played Princess Leia, Luke and Han Solo are about to start filming sometime soon, so that narrows the time frame to the New Republic period.
There's at least one character I don't want to see in the new movies: Jar-Jar Binks. He's a buffoon, I dislike him for that and don't want to see it but with Disney owning the series it will probably still be there as a comic relief. Also, I expect that despite Leia, Luke and Solo being there that the main characters aren't these but others instead, for example a young Jedi apprentice with Luke as its master.

About the "Rebels" show, it follows the footsteps of the previous "The Clone Wars" but now, as the title says, it's about the creation of the Alliance to Restore the Republic a.k.a. the Rebels, to fight agaisnt Palpatine, Vader and the Empire as a whole so this means that the target audience will still be children and so, unfortunately for those who, like me, are older or even young adults, we won't see decapitations and such. Having said that, the last seasons of The Clone Wars were great and more mature that the first ones so I hope they've learned their lesson.
The characters are one of the main fields were clichés and tropes will galore and from what has been revealed so far, there are already some: the main character is defined as a "Jedi Cowboy" (and said by a guy wearing a cowboy hat -_-) who uses a blaster instead of a lightsaber (Cowboy samurai trope checked also because, according to some personnel, he was designed to have some "samurai features"). Another one is the new robot "partner" whose nickname is "Chopper", and guess why? If you've said that's because it has some kind of propeller feature in its head then you've guessed it right (it's Star Wars and they're naming it after something that, I think, is probably some ancient tecnology in the SW Universe -_-').
Since it was only created after the sacrifice of Starkiller (the protagonist from the game The Force Unleashed) I'm expecting him to make some sort of cameo among others.
I'm happy with the time period of the show since I've always wanted to see a modern show about the Empire and the Rebels.
Despite my critics, I'm really looking foward to it.

1- My favorite character has to be Qui-Gon Jin. I like his "gray Jedi"/maverick behaviour. I also like his portrayal in Episode IV (I can't recall the actor's name, I'm deeply sorry), namely the hair and beard. Unfortunately, I think his role in the movie was a sad one - getting stabbed and dying and Maul
gets cut in half, falls into some shaft and survives, managing to battle Obi Wan when he's already old in Tatooine? WHAT?
If it wasn't for Qui-Gon, I would chose Cade Skywalker. I hate the Skywalker family but this guy isn't the typical Skywalker and I know it's full of tropes but still: awesome jacket, awesome crew, doesn't start as your regular well behaved Jedi. The only thing I dislike it's his facial expressions in some BD's (I have only watched images) with strange lips and his hair that sometimes looks like some 80's perm.

2 - I would like to be a Jedi, but a "gray" one. The new trilogy made the Jedi Order look as dumb, stupid and blind as...as...I can't even compare it with anything. Having 6/7 Jedis in front of Palpatine and just not noticing anything? Not to speak that something seemed wrong by the dawn of the Clone Wars and yet they accepted right there to command an entire clone army that appeared out of nowhere. *facepalm* What's with the Republic? It doesn't have to be the only legit form of state and also, it was full of corrupt people. Not only that but opposition inside the Jedi Order wasn't welcomed...so much for understanding. Despite this, a Jedi all the way (also, since Dooku is the only Sith I've known that didn't get his face all messed up by the Dark side I wouldn't risk it).

3- Powers...Well, first of all, going by the classes established in TOR MMO game, I would be some kind of Consular and schoolar, having a green Lightsaber and studying the ways of the Force so I would like to have some exotic powers but mainly some healing abilities, speed, the usual mind trick, oh yeah and the ability to control animals and plants. Unfortunately, the movies and shows have Jedi as nothing more than samurais levitating things and being reckless, unlike in the games and comic books.

4 - My master...hum, preferably Dooku or Qui-Gon but since their fate is already decided I wouldn't mind being trained by Asajj Ventress if she were to teach me...or perhaps Maris Brood. And yes, I would like to have something with them; since It would happen during the New Jedi order where marriages are allowed, then why not?

5 - My favorite ship is a Corellian YZ-775 medium transport (Google it).

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

I agree about not bringing back Jar-Jar Binks in Episode VII, C-3PO and R2-D2 were nowhere near as bad in terms of comic relief especially Chewbacca. While were on the subject of the Star Wars prequels (Episodes I-III) I hated how George Lucas ruined the mystery behind "the force" by naming it "midichlorians", not to mention that Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) and Natalie Portman (Padmé Amidala) didn't have any chemistry between eachother in Episode II and Episode III although Episode III was the best of the Star Wars prequels IMO since it showed how Anakin became Darth Vader.

As a Star Wars Junkie and seeing Episode IV at the IMAX back in the late 90's I'd say that the original trilogy is far superior to the prequels because I feel like the CGI used in the prequels ruined the magic of what made the original trilogy special where the technology wasn't available at the time back in the 70's and 80's. Back then you had stop-motion animation combined with actor's wearing suits instead of most of it just being in CGI, nowadays people are taking too many shortcuts with movies because they don't have the money and resources they once had when the U.S. economy was booming. Now that I've got that out of my chest I'll go ahead and answer the quiz:

1. Who is your favorite character in the Star Wars Universe and why? I think it's a tie between Yoda and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) cause I've always been fascinated by how Yoda is like a sensei/teacher to the Jedi he trains and he's amazing in battle as well. I really like Luke cause you can relate to him a bit more as a hero than Link from Legend of Zelda I suppose and unlike his father he never turned to the Dark Side of the Force so that's a plus.

2. Would you like to be a Jedi, Sith or something else? Why? Jedi cause they fight for the common good by bringing order and justice to all. If there's one thing Jedi have that Sith lack it's honor and pride of what they do. The Sith only care about creating disorder and chaos to the galaxy even though they have a few tricks such as the force choke and the force lightning.

3. If in the previous question you've answered Jedi or Sith, which powers would you like to have/learn? The classic Jedi mind trick as well as being able to grab a lightsaber at will as a means for self-defense.

4. If in question 2 you've answered Jedi or Sith, would you like to have a certain Jedi or Sith as your master? Why? I'd pick Yoda due to his vast wisdom and knowledge in the ways of the force by utilizing his teachings as a tool for good and to learn more about myself in the ways of life. He's the most philosophical character in the Star Wars Universe as well as a great mentor and a teacher.

5. What's your favorite ship? The Millennium Falcon of course.

I'd love to see the original Star Wars cast return for Episode VII although I hope Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will be alright while filming in it. Harrison Ford's doing well I think as his performance in the recent Jackie Robinson documentary was amazing, I also wouldn't mind seeing Billy Dee Williams return as Lando. I know it's going to be in CGI just like the prequels in the late 90's and early 2000's so that's kind of a bummer but since Disney is in charge of the film's production anything goes I guess. They didn't disappoint with Frozen so I think they'll do fine with Episode VII, VIII, and IX.

I didn't get into the Clone Wars Animated Series all that much compared to the Star Wars films and video games by LucasArts (before Disney shut it down of course) so I probably don't see myself getting into the Rebels Animated series because of it. I never read any of the Star Wars novels but one of my friends have that takes place after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, although I was interested in reading the manga version of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back but it was sealed in plastic to where I couldn't read it from right to left. You probably know how I feel about MMORPG's so I didn't really care that much for the one based on Star Wars.

If you've hated how Lucas ruined the Force with midichlorians then you should have seen some three episodes in the animated series where the Force now
has 3 deities: the Father (impartial), the Son (dark) and the Daughter (Light).

I've recently saw some youtube videos named "What if Episode ... was good" or something like this and I'd never given much thought to why I hate Episode 2 and in general, Anakin's relationship with Padmé but seeing that, I agree with the author: Lucas went with "tell, don't show" about their relation and it also didn't do a good job when tackling the relation between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Not to mention the poor choice of actors for Anakin's role. The one that did Episode I now hates the saga and is afraid of the "monsters" (and he did such a lousy job..."Yipee") and Hayden...his acting wasn't so bad as the kid but it wasn't that good either.
Yup, I also think that the original trilogy is far better than the second and also because the lack in one and abuse in the other, of CGI.

Yoda was really cool in the original trilogy but in the new one it was yet another victim that was turned into a dummy Jedi so that Palpatine could get away with his plans that would end up in the Galactic Empire. Again, 6/7Jedis in front of Palpatine and not even one of them feels suspicious.
I wouldn't mind at all seeing Lando again and Cloud City but then again, I love Cloud City because of some 80's feeling I get from it.
My main reason for watching the animated series was that I really wanted to see more of the Clone Wars (nowadays the only portion of Episode III that I can watch before turning off is the introduction with the battle above Coruscant) and now with "Rebels" I want to see more of the Empire.

Thanks for the link. He reminds me the villain portrayed by Gary Oldman in "The Fifth Element".

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

I don't quite get why you introduced that questionnaire from the last star wars thread into a thread about the upcoming movies (that no one bothrered to answer, it was quite amusing), but alright:

1- I have two, vima sunrider and mara jade (well, and leia. And pretty much all of KOTOR II) I like vima because, despite having just one meaningful apparition and having to compete with her mother (who is certainly a tough act to follow), she's an impatient teen that gets tired of her mom's BS and runs away to train with a broken jedi who can't feel the force anymore, she just doesn't give a f***. Same with mara, she's just too badass, and her face-off with kyle in dromund kaas will forever remain one of the highlights of gaming for me.
2- Jedi. Although the whole "saint" thing doesn't suit me, I like to think I pursue my own view of justice and fairness, including the infamous "from a certain point of view"... So I'd say I'd fit quite well there (yes, I'm implying that the jedi, and myself, are assholes). Besides, the jedi have variety, so...
3- Force cloak, mind trick, speed, telekinesis in most variants (cryokinesis, electrokinesis, push, pull, choke, etc.).
4- Well, vima and mara would be grand. Meetra surik and God damn kreia too. Having jedi nietszche as your teacher must be incredible.
5- The lambda-class shuttle, Y-wing, A-wing, X-wing, B-wing, Snowspeeder and Speeder bike, but the last ones are not "ships", exactly.

Now what I came in here to do:

Apparently there's a task force dedicated to prune the EU and define a single canonical timeline.

As long as they keep the old republic stories and games and the thrawn trilogy I'm OK with it, we all know the EU is pretty bloated with some stupid things (coughdarkempireyuhuzhanvongcough).

I made a comment in that thread you've mentioned and since it was old, Chaos Jackal decided to turn my comment into a new thread. Also, the thread was a real mess without any specific subject other than the entirety of the SW universe. With that in mind, I've restricted this new thread to the upcoming animated series and movies and since the questionnaire wasn't harmful in any way, I modified and expanded it a bit and it's the part where you can just give your likings and opinions without being restricted to the thread's name.

I'm really looking foward for what comes out of that task force. All it takes to see how big and confusing SW is is going to the Wookiepedia. The new movies themselves will be a part of it I think. I admit that the EU is way too chubby but I hope they will at least recycle some characters (even I'm not so sure of it...I would like to see Cade Skywalker without the 80's hair and the bloated lips but then again, if he were to have an updated appearence he would be a "Samurai Cowboy" even more). One thing is for sure: I don't want to see some Mickey Death Star as canon!

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

I've been a big Star Wars fan since I was a kid. My mom introduced me to the original trilogy when I was young and sick in bed for something nice and long to watch to help me pass the time, and once I'd seen the movies and was hooked, my grandfather stoked my interest in the EU by buying me some of the books and telling me a lot of the old SW rumour stories, like about the original 9 "episodes", etc.

Favourite character spot has to go to the Solo twins, Jacen and Jaina. I think I've always felt a connection to them, especially since we sort of grew up together. I started reading the Bantam novels in the mid-90s (when I was 10 or so), and I especially loved the books that featured the kids. Fast forward a few years until I was a teenager and I'd caught up on pretty much all of the "adult" SW novels, but happened to come across the YA young Jedi series starring my favourite twins, once again right at my age. After that series finished up, I ended up taking a break from SW novels for some time, eventually coming back to it towards the beginning of the Fate of the Jedi arc; an adult now reading about Jacen and Jaina as adults, starting with the Yuuzhan Vong, ending up with Jacen's descent to the dark side. It was really sad to see him go. I'll be pretty devastated if the twins don't make it (at least in some form) in the "new" Disney canon.

I've always resonated pretty strongly with the Jedi. I think the Sith history is more varied and cool (especially a lot of the older origin stories and such), but I'm the kind of person who always ends up "(something) good" in those D&D alignment quizzes, generally the type to be willing to work and sacrifice for the greater good and to always see the best in people. Perhaps the same thing that makes me associate more with Jedi is what also makes me a good mod? :p As far as powers go, I've always been fascinated with Jedi healing, which is traditionally a rare but obviously useful skill. That said, I would still love to have Mara Jade as my teacher. :D

Call me a traditionalist, but the Falcon always has been, and always will be, my favourite ship. <3 One of these days, I hope to get the Lego one (if hubby will let me ;~; ). Otherwise, in close second place, is the Errant Venture, because who wouldn't love a Star Destroyer painted bright red. :D I've also always been partial to X-Wings and B-Wings, though that might just be because of the starships miniature game (B-wings are such excellent glass cannons).

Like a great many SW fans, I'm cautious optimistic about the new additions to the series. I kind of flipped out a bit when I heard about the newly-appointed canon "task force" but immediately calmed down when I saw Leland Chee is a part (hopefully a large one) of the decision making process. I'll be the first to say that there's a lot of EU material that probably deserves to be cut (some of the cheesier Bantam and other early novels, some of the more ridiclous comic series), but I also have a feeling that some GOOD things are going to be cut for no other reason than to make room for the new stuff Disney wants to add in. The Thrawn trilogy is mostly what I have in mind when saying this; it's such a good series, but it has the bad luck to happen to fall right in the sweet spot of where Disney will likely make Episode VII fall.

I'm less nervous about Rebels, but also less excited. There really hasn't been a lot of EU material about that time frame (at least, not in novel form; I wouldn't be surprised if there were comics), so there's nothing I'm afraid of being removed or replaced. But at the same time, I never watched the Clone Wars show at all (seemed too kiddish for me, and it also happens to fall in a time in the story that I'm not particularly fond of; Karen Traviss's novels are the only Clone Wars material I really, honestly like), so I'm not really all that interested, either. I'll probably at least pick up a couple episodes to give it a chance, but I'm not enthusiastic.

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

The clone wars is not that bad, really, I always think of them, story-wise, as what we should have had instead of episodes 1 and 2 (maybe even 3, too), just a grown-up anakin and obi wan going around the galaxy, kicking all kinds of ass, buddy cop style. No virgin births (I think lucas had left his subltety on the toilet that day), no midichlorians, no jar jar, no stupid, stupid secret cloning plots, just the usual star war and jedi kicking asses old-school like. If you need to see one, watch "trespass", it is my personal favorite, and it's a perfect example of what I just described (plus, the soundtrack is magnificent).

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

Thanks for the suggestion; I'll have to check it out one of these days. :) I'll even try and get over my instant dislike of the art style and irrelevant grudge for the destruction of the EU Mandalorian canon and give it an honest attempt. :p

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

If you need, cherry pick them. The episodes of the force trinity or whatever those abominations were called, to the trash, the mandalorian ones too, the ones with jar jar (except the ones of the blue shadow virus, those weren't bad)... you get what I'm saying.

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

Yeah, true. Though, to be honest, as terrible as it sounds, there is a part of me that really wants to see the Force Trinity episodes, because they were forced into the EU novels, too (see: FotJ arc). I guess it's kind of like watching a train wreck, you can't help but turn your head to watch, even though you know you aren't going to be pleased with it.

I find it fascinating that your grandfather was the one stoking your interest. :)
We'll have to wait and see what comes out of the new "Order 66" issued by Disney and the task force, only this time it isn't restricted to the Jedi! Meanwhile, Lucas is way better than Yoda was on Dagobah.
So, which model of the Falcon are you wanting to buy, the new model (I think they'll release one this year...I'll have to go check again on Brickipedia) or one of the older ones? Btw, do you have any other Lego ship(s)? I have three: the first LAAT to be released (I just love the russian Hind-D and the LAAT is inspired on it so it's no coincidence that I fell for it), Jango Fett's Slave I (whatever the media, I love ships with that configuration) and the first Droid Tri-fighter to be released (it's easy to hold in your ahnd and (namely compared to the LAAT) and it's just so beatiful.
I don't find the Falcon ugly but I just don't like asymmetrical things, namely the cockpit on one side of the ship so I prefer the YT-2000. About the Errant Venture, who also doesn't like to have a Star Destroyer at his (or her) disposal ans instill fear on the opponents?
The best thing coming out of the new trilogy were ships. I like the original Star Destroyers (except for those "balls", one on each side of the bridge...every time I see those I just think it'll start to blink -_-) and X-wings but I like even more the Venator Star Destroyers and the ARC-170. The original trilogy, while far from breing bad, sometimes it's seems rather dull and dark (of course, some of it is due to the technical limitations of the filming age). I know it's during the Empire but even so. I'm hoping for Rebels to bring a little brightness to it.
About the Clone Wars, do you remember my complaints about the need for a more mature Pokémon series? Yup, the same applies to this show (and will apply to some extent to Rebels) but like professorlight said, there are some good episodes (the season five final episodes were great and start to show the dark age that will fall on those worlds). Oh, btw, what was supposed to be season six (which ended up being cancelled (by Disney I think) will start airing this month and it seems rather good from what I've seen:

My grandfather was a huge Sci-Fi/Fantasy geek. In addition to SW, he was also the one who got me into LotR, and in general encouraged my reading. I have to give him a lot of credit for that. <3

I don't have any of the Lego SW ships, sadly. :< Used to have a few of the smaller ones BACK IN YE OLDE DAYS, but who knows what's happened to them since then. As such, I don't really have a preference for old or new, I'd just be happy to have one. :D And an X-Wing and a Tie; I could hang them from my ceiling and feel excellent.

Seems like a great person!

I went check the Lego Falcon and I was right...in part. This year there will be a release but it's a microfighter. -_-
The last model released was back in 2011:

and then there's this one, a colector's item, from 2007:

Since I'm passing by and saw the question about Lego ships, I might as well say this. Me and my bro have Darth Vader's TIE Fighter that was released in 2009-2010 (can't really remember). Cool model, if you ask me.

I'll admit, the older one looks cooler (and more Lego-like), but I like the newer one, too, and would be perfectly happy with it. :D Only problem is convincing my husband that it's a worthwhile purchase. :p

That's also the "problem" with the Lego games: the older ones were more Lego-Like, namely in the scenarios, nowadays Lego pieces are only in puzzles and few decorations.
But OF COURSE is worthwhile! He can play with it, it's a nice touch to every house and, above all, even if you're obviously wanting to keep it until you die (and leave it to your children) you can still say that in the future, if you sell it it'll be worth a lot of money because it's a collector's item.
Last resort: make a strike of...you know what! :shy:

PS: one good thing from the new trilogy is that it will also have the Lego games' version of it, which are always funny.

Next 'Star Wars' film to be set 30 years after 'Return of the Jedi'

PORTLAND, Ore. — The highly anticipated next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise will be set 30 years after "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," Walt Disney Co.'s chief executive officer Bob Iger said on Tuesday at the company's annual shareholders meeting.

Disney purchased "Star Wars" production company LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in 2012 and announced it would release three new films in the popular sci-fi series. Fans have been avidly awaiting details of the next film, "Star Wars: Episode VII."

Popular "Star Wars" characters are pictured in "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," from left, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo.

"Return of the Jedi" was the third film in the first trilogy of "Star Wars" released between 1977 and 1983. The series is set in a galaxy far, far away, in the past.

Iger did not reveal any casting news, other than to confirm the return of the robot character R2D2. The official Star Wars website posted on Monday the new films would feature "a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces," and that filming would begin in May at London's famed Pinewood studios.

Rumors have swirled for over a year on whether some of the franchise's stars, including Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, would return. Trade magazines have reported that rising stars including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o and "Girls" actor Adam Driver were being considered.

The "Star Wars" franchise was created by director George Lucas and comprises six films that have grossed more than $4.4 billion at the worldwide box office since the first film was released in 1977.

"Episode VII" will be released on Dec. 18, 2015, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams, who helmed the recent "Star Trek" film franchise reboot

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

You're fast!
Well, if Chewbacca is there then we already have a retcon because according to wookiepedia he died in 25 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin 4)!
I just hope that Chewbacca doesn't become the new Jar-Jar and the furry creature aimed for children.
I've read somewhere (it was an online soap site about Leia's actress appearing in "The Big Bang Theory") that the old trio would appear. So, if there's a new trio, then most of the stories about grandpa Luke e Han e grandma Leia will be delegated to other media.
Another thing, I've been watching season 6 of The Clone Wars (the one that got cancelled but is now airing on Netflix) and there's all this references to Marvel characters like a clone soldier nicknamed Doom and wearing a color scheme made of green and gray and there was another that held a "machine-gun" and used it to tackle enemies that had some inscription including the word "hammer" and was a nod to Thor so I really don't wanna see this kind of stuff in the movies, it's distracting. *facepalm* Oh George Lucas, what have you done!?

Carrie Fisher appeared on The Big Bang Theory weeks ago with James Earl Jones.
