Should we rid of emotion?

For a seemingly endless time the theme for survival of the fittest has been used. Usually within wild animals, but humans are also animals, just with a bit more reasoning. Nowadays, survival of the fittest means nothing to humans because we seem to have feelings for the weak and we care for them in hospitals. If we, as a society, ever want a perfect world, we need to rid of emotions. Emotions cause to be jealous and give revenge, if we had no emotion, the crime rate would be close to none. Human error would be the exception, but that can be fixed in time. What are your views of emotion? Should we get rid of them?

But seriously, while emotion does most likely impede progress to an extent, I think I'd like life more with it than I would without it, even with all the bad it brings, for it also brings good. (Of course, that's just a matter of opinion.)

Though, if we had started off without emotion, then I guess we wouldn't know what it'd be like with emotion... *Shrugs*

First off, how would we get rid of emotions? That would take intense training, we'd have to become Vulcans or something. :/

(If you haven't noticed, though, other animals than humans have emotions, anger seemingly being the most prevalent.)

I'd say in order to get rid of emotions, we'd have to all get together and agree to live an a society like the one in The Giver (Lois Lowry), but different.

I have trouble elaborating on these kinds of threads. >_<

Edit: Xous you ninja. Ah well, at least with that last sentence you're getting the point of my third paragraph across.

That's funny.

Anyhow, I don't think emotions should be gotten rid of. Even if it would create a perfect society, we couldn't be happy about it.

i cannot imagine a world without emotion, that is in some way what makes us living beings, and as Xous said we are better with it than without it

Sorry, but the first post makes no sense at all. How can a world be perfect without the emotions of happiness or joy? To put a very blunt utilitarian view on things, one could define the best society as the one that maximizes overall "happiness", which obviously isn't realized with an emotionless system.

Like I could go on but I don't think the topic is worthy of much discussion, although I guess I'll spend more time if anyone is willing to debate what I just said.

It would be perfect, in the sense that we would evolve as a society more. Our living standards would be increased. No one would worry about anything because they have no feeling.

I just wanted to see how this topic does, if it doesn't get like 15 posts by today I'll probably delete it altogether.

Survival of the fittest is definitely still prevalent in humans. We are always in competition.

...And I guess it really depends on your view of 'perfect'. People live for happiness, right? Isn't that like, someone's main goal in life? You couldn't be happy in an emotionless world... so life would become pointless...right?

Technology and science are the reason survival of the fittest are no more. Oh look, science found out how to complete get rid of this disease and that disease. Oh look, we can make this, thus making it idiot proof and free of accidents. Survival of the fittest has been dead for a long long time.

I don't think that even if we could that we should, without emotions everything would be lame, we would never be happy or sad it would be boring

EMotions get in the way of the path to true victory! And righteousness!
But in all seriousness, I only have emotions cuz it's human nature. I honestly think the world would be a better place without them. On the other hand, it would be sick and disgusting to get rid of them.

If the world had no emotions, I would suspect mass suicide, no civilization, and no advances in technology. There would be basically no purpose to life.... Those who chose to live, for no good reason IMO would simply do what's necessary to keep themself alive. No emotion means no desire for success, and no love or care to others...

There have been times when I have been emotionless to everyone here except a very select few. This is more seen from me on the chat than on the forum.

technology is what ruined the entire Survival of the Fittest idea in the first place. We as humans are relying on technology to evolve, not natural selection like the way it should be.

emotions are emotions, we are what we are. I think just deal and stop striving to be perfect. just chill and be chill.
you should go read the tao te ching, its pretty sweet, and it has the answer (or at least my opinion on) to this question

d00d, you jacked my phrase.

d00d, I kno, rite? As Wailmer Man said, I think it would change the world for the better, but it can't happen so in all honesty there's no reason to discuss it IMO.
