Technology: Questions, Answers & Recommendations

I don't really like how DS games look on my 3DSXL, but that's my only complaint, and I still have my old DS Lite if I want to play DS games anyway. I would definitely consider the upgrade worthwhile just because of how shiny and pretty and awesome things look on the bigger screen. <.<

Last Online Skype?

How do I tell when someone was last online? Meaning last time they were on because I can see offline or online Icon but not the time they were last on actually and I can see the time I last posted. For example: You know how this forum shows when you were last online? Like say yesterday at 3PM? Where can I view that on Skype cause I can't see where to find that when I check profiles to see when they were last on. Thanks XD.:)

Hover your cursor over their Skype status icon. You'll then see a yellow box appear, which will contain information about when they were last seen on Skype and when you last spoke to them.

My 3DS XL's Top Screen Got Cracked!

What should I do? It can still see the top screen for now and the bottom screen looks fine. I miss the days of GBA, when handhelds were indestructible! :(

Save your money and get it repaired, buy another one, or just deal with it (it sounds like the system is still playable). Those are literally your only options.

It's still under Warranty, as I ordered it last September. The only problem is, I don't know how to get the proof of purchase, as the box would have been thrown away by now.

In this case, just pay for the repairs. It will still come way cheaper than buying a new one.

On the other hand, if this problem doesn't affect your gaming experience, do not bother at all. My GBA (which is 12 years old) got a crack on the screen at some point, but it was nothing big and I never had it fixed.

Iirc, the serial code on the back of the 3DS will indicate whether it is still under warranty (though I'm not sure how accurate it is). Try entering it on the Nintendo help site when setting up a repair ticket and see if that works (I did so with a 3DS I knew not to be under warranty and it was sufficient for the site to identify warranty status).

So hey, I've got a question about my computer. Just a few days ago, I started up my laptop and half of the screen was white. I realized that this was probably a problem with the visuals cable (not sure what it's actually called) so I took apart my laptop and tried reconnecting that. It didn't help, but the connection that I tinkered with was the one on the screen, not in the computer itself. So next I tried unplugging that one. I couldn't even get it unplugged, I felt like I was damaging it. So at the moment I have my laptop hooked up to a tv with an hdmi cable, the only problem with this being that it puts a lot of strain on my eyes (for reasons that don't matter and that I can probably fix). So anyhoo, does someone have suggestions as to what I should do to try and fix it? If I wasn't clear on something just say so and I'll elaborate or google the correct terminology, haha.

Hello everyone. I'm in the market for a new computer and would like some input from you guys. I have narrowed it down to 2 computers:

- Asus 15.6" Intel i5, Windows 8, 4GB Memory, 500GB HD, 1.6GHz processor speed (turbo boost up to 2.6), $449

- Dell Inspiron 15.6" Intel i5, Windows 7, 8GB Memory, 1TB HD, 2.7GHz processor speed, and a plus for this one is that it has HD Audio enhanced with Waves MaxxAudio, $479

Now I'll be using the computer mostly for web surfing/social networking, downloading and storing my library of music, storing pictures, probably watching Netflix since it'll be fast enough (my current computer was definitely not), and also probably playing the Pokemon TCG online for once. I'm not a computer gamer, so keep that in mind. However, that 2.7 processor speed on the Dell seems much more attractive than the 1.6 on the Asus. Really, the major thing that is preventing me from just buying the Dell is that the Asus has Windows 8. Part of me just wants the most up to date system out there, even though a bunch of people hate Windows 8 (I think I could get used to it, and I'm pretty sure after while Microsoft will bring back the start menu).

What say you? What would you go with? Thanks in advance for your feedback. It's appreciated!

I'd go with the Dell. Most of the Windows 8 functionality that separated it from Win7 is touch screen stuff (which I assume you wouldn't be using, unless the Asus is touch screen) and app stuff (for if you really like apps so much that you want them on your computer in addition to your phone, I guess?). Otherwise, a lot of the functionality is very similar to Win7, and many of the "hacks" that make Win8 more computer-friendly only serve to, more or less, make it look and act more like Win7.

I don't think you would need 8GB of memory if you're using it as casually as that. The Dell looks a little overkill. I'd pick the Asus, see if you can downgrade to Windows 7 and upgrade to a 1TB hard drive since they aren't that more expensive.

Assuming the prices are similar, I'd suggest Dell. If Asus is cheaper, though, I suggest you go for it. The Dell is very powerful, but judging from the potential use, you won't be needing that much. Asus seems good enough for anything you might try, so unless the difference in prices is small, it's the best pick. The only thing that might give you problems (seeing as you download a lot) would be the HD, but you can always fix that with external devices or an easy upgrade to a bigger one.

For basic use, just go with the Asus, as the Dell is geared more towards benefiting those who might be interested in doing gaming, but seeing that there is very little price difference between the two, you'll have to ask yourself whether you might benefit from the extra storage. Right now, I'm using a Dell computer that also has 1TB of storage, but I'm only using approximately 150GB of that 1TB (main computer for browsing, Netflix, homework, basic games).

I'd essentially be paying $30 more for the upgrade in memory and HD space if I went with the Dell (which I may go with because I have A LOT of music and will only be downloading more in the future, plus add all the photos that I'll be storing). All of your suggestions were helpful, thanks. I'll mull it over at work before buying one tonight.

Considering how processor intensive watching netflix can be, the 8 GB of RAM will be your friend so you can still do other tasks. The extra storage should be very useful since you intend of storing your music library and photos. External hard drives do come at a somewhat high cost depending on how much extra space you need. It also has the enhanced audio which you would be utitilizing between music and watching Netflix.

As far as the OS is concerned, nothing is wrong with Windows 7. It actually is a bit better in terms of being compatible because its been out longer. I personally hate Windows 8 so I've been using Windows 7 for years.

I'd recommend the Dell even though it is slightly more pricy because it will have the features that are better suited for your needs.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 with Intel Core i5 and Windows 7. Now, I'm pretty sure this model you described is the same one that I have, if you have the model number or picture I could give you plenty of information for this laptop.

My question is also regarding buying a new computer, kinda. My Inspiron is falling apart. One of the hinges on the Monitor is broken, 1 out of 3 USB ports work (the only 2.0), the headphone jack is also straight up broken, and it sometimes overheats but that's probably my fault. I was thinking of just getting a new laptop, one that could actually play low quality games and not suffer from spontaneous combustion. My other option was replacing the faulty parts and maybe getting a new processor. I was wondering where I should start with this, where I should look for these parts/computers and what the price range would be like for this stuff. Thanks!

You can go to a Walmart and they sell adapters that change 1 USB Port into 4. I think that runs around $13 or so depending on your location.

They also sell headsets, some of which use a USB port so you'd still be able to voice chat and listen to music. Price will vary depending on what headset you get. What I use is a Logitech one that runs around $35 and it works well.

Hinges and processor you'd have to go a specialty store most likely.

Blocking Youtube Advertisement Ticks?

Not sure if I should post here or in the Youtubers thread in Member clubs so here it goes. How do I get rid of the yellow ad ticks on some of the videos? Some videos now have ads every 5-10 minutes or so. Is there a way I can block them in Fire Fox or Chrome on PC? On my Tablet it automatically blocks the yellow ticks on the videos but not on my PC. How do I block those yellow ticks if they can be done? Thanks?:)
